First female. Mark Johnson, obviously.

Yes, I was only talking about the women's side as both a player and a head coach. I know there are others on the men's side as well. George Gwozdecky - WI '77 as a player, Denver '04 and '05 as a head coach. My bro is a DU grad so I follow them. Also Jim Montgomery - Maine '93 as a player, Denver '17 as a head coach. And another that you may have seen play back in the day ... Mike Eaves at WI '77 as a player, WI '06 as head coach. I watched the '77 men's semi on TV as a kid and was devastated when Wisconsin beat UNH in OT in Detroit. And Eaves' son Ben won one at BC as a player in 2001.

It will be pretty cool when we start having mothers and daughters that have both won Natty's in hockey too. It will probably be another decade or so before that happens.

I remember exactly where I was when Eaves scored off the faceoff in the semi, and again when Steve Alley got the OT winner the next night; my sophomore year.

The goalie on the team, Julian Baretta, was a roommate of a good friend of mine from junior high.

(Thinking about it some more, there was also a pretty good forward on that team named Mike Meeker. He came over a couple times to the apartment I shared with three other guys to get help in organic chemistry from the roommate who became a dentist. Nice guy.)

I had to break the current tie. I like Crowell, and then there's a little less shame in being blown away by a team on its way to the national title.

It could happen and I wouldn't even necessarily know it, with the differing surnames. Jenny Potter's daughter is old enough that she could have won a title if that was her track as a player. For a high-profile player, there will be stories about it, but if someone is a role player and her daughter is as well, will we even realize it?

Thanks to Whoop87 for remembering that women DID play for the NC before time! Some great Alumni on that team 1998 still drop by Lake Whitt! I chat with AJ and Angela about their Harvard days and losing to UNH before beating us the next year…..

The reminiscing of that ‘77’ game was different from the bench! Robertearle, did you notice on that face off that the puck never hit the ice before Johnson hit it off Dan Magnerelli’s shoulder having it roll off his shoulder into the net?
About 20 years ago, one of our defenseman, Joe Rando, gave me a couple of boxy video tapes from PBS channel 44 Boston, who actually broadcast that UNH-Wisconsin game! This was before tape machines were widely sold to the public…I grew up with Chris Berman, so I called and asked if he knew if anyone could transfer the video to disc…one company said they would try(the tapes were now nearly 40 years old), and would cost $500 if they could…well afterwards, I had copies made for every UNH teammate but also upon checking with the Wisconsin video department, who said they didn’t have that game in their library, I called Mark J. and Mike E. to see if they’d like copies….when Mark came to Durham with the Badgers in early 2010’s, I asked him about the puck drop before handing him his disc…I was glad to meet these guys as they were both as congenial and gracious as could be! Nothing wrong with Midwestern manners for sure…..by the way, in that game, I believe there were 11 future NHL players! Keep in mind the place collegiate players were back then…11!

I'm 100% sure that it was televised live in Madison. In those days, home games were regularly shown, but on a tape-delay basis by the local PBS channel, 10:30 PM for a 7 PM game, etc. So it was common to go out to 'the bars' and then head back to see some or all of the replay. But those '77 NCAA games were shown live. Maybe PBS 'shared' the video production among the cities, but this version of it has regular Badger play-by-play guy Paul Braun on the call.

THANK YOU Robertearle!! Despite my hatred of red jerseys, I had no idea to call the local PBS station for the tape! Of course, if someone at Wisconsin would’ve been as helpful as you’ve been…. Still it’s great to see…as I’m a bachelor with no marriage or kids, those are some of my life’s best memories, even with the loss….I hadn’t seen any of the championship game as we had the consolation before it….
After that game, we’re drinking on the 11th floor, sitting around the elevator bank(Hyatt Regency design)as the Badger fans and band come into the lobby singing “when you’ve said Wisconsin, you’ve said it all” to the Budweiser tune…we immediately break into the French song “Alouette”(a big contingent from Berlin area), then throwing our empty Bud cans down on them, 11 floors below! It was all taken in good humor and we ended up drinking with them all by 3-4 in the morning!

Thanks for the link! I'll save that for a rainy day and will be sure to dull the pain with some of Timothy's favorite thinner.

I've been hoping that Wisconsin would put in a bid to host the women's Frozen Four some year. I've only been to Madison once and I didn't catch a game while I was there. I know Labahn has a small seating capacity but I'd think the Kohl Center would work if they just used the lower tier. I was at the 2008 FF in Duluth at the old DECC for the Kim Martin Show and I made it out to Ridder for the FF in 2015 ... very nice rink and great atmosphere. I'm due for another Mid West trip.

That isn't a full replay, just a short highlight. I included as 'proof' that there had been Madison specific TV that night.

The KC is always occupied this weekend with state high school basketball championships, and nobody is going to be moving that to a different date or different site.

Somebody has already edited the 'NCAA Championship' wikipedia page. :-)

Still the WCHA page to be done.

(Which I have now done.)

Perfect! The question is "would you do that now?"

I'm looking at the highlight video of the penalty that Ohio State converts on in the second period: the OSU skater goes around behind her own net and runs her own skate into the back of the net, trips herself. Not even close to being a penalty.

Tellin' ya, deal with the Devil.

Yeah, but UMD got away with at least a couple blatant penalties before that so I figure that call was karma.

After repeated virtual assurances by my “provider” that I could stream, I was forced into frantic scrolling through channels featuring Division 1A Cheerleading Regionals and “Edge of Insanity,” which is where I was, so I went to radioland (what a tripp!) where Coyne Schofield announced matter-of-factly that the UMD penalty was a make-up call, while later both she and Tripp were certain that OSU had too many players on the ice in the third period when the distracted refs blew a whistle to stop play after the puck went off a helmet somewhere. I wonder if the video crew caught this.

Ya, the whole game had so many weird moments. I'm not sure what was going on with the hockey gods this weekend (perhaps punishment for the discord between the two separate "pro" groups), but both the women's D1 and D3 national championship games had some very strange moments, some of which needed video review and some of which were created by some really bad decisions by coaches and players, particularly by players in today's D1 game. At the end of the day even an ugly win is still a win and THE OSU won the day. Congrats to all fans and alums of their program! I know some alums who played for some of the previous coaches who will remain nameless because they hurt the program more than they helped it, so my congrats to all those alums who truly paid their dues with their blood, sweat, and lots of heartache and tears!

I was curious about the relative experience of NCAA champ winning goalies, meaning college games played before winning a championship. Depending on where you look, Amanda Thiele has played 27 games. She’s a sophomore, got credit for playing 3 games last year. In 21 years only 2 goalies have played fewer games before winning a championship: Patricia Sautter in 2002, and freshman Jessie Vetter in 2006. Kind of ironic that a team considered so veteran ended up winning with one of their least seasoned goalies, but it worked.

Thiele 27 - OSU
Blair 91 Wisc

Campbell 84 Wisc
Tiley 152 Clarkson
Tiley 112 ClarksoN
Leveille 116 Minn

Leveille 82 Minn
Howe 140 Clarkson
Raty 139 Minn

Rigsby 31 Wisconsin freshman

Jennifer Harss 39 UMD freshman
Vetter 115 Wisc
Martin 57 UMD
Vetter 37 Wisc
Vetter 13 Wisc freshman

Jody Horak 105 Minn
Jody Horak 77 Minn
Patricia Sautter 53 UMD
Patricia Sautter 22 UMD
Tuula Puputti 48 (35 in NCAA era)
