2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

Both teams playing defensively sound early in the extra session, neither wanting to make the season-ending mistake. Lots of play in the neutral zone.

FS 23,
I hope to meet you in Nashville or Pittsburgh.

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

Michaud nearly gives North Dakota its ninth National Championship. Frisch finds Weatherby in the neutral zone, and Weatherby dumps it down into the Mavericks end. Pinto gathers control of the puck behind the McKay's net, and finds Michaud at the near dot. Michaud rips a wrister on net, but McKay gets just enough of his shoulder on the puck, and it trickles up and over the net. And we skate on...

And we're back to some racehorse hockey. Moments after Michaud nearly ends it, Parker Tuomie blasts a laser from the near circle that whistles just over the crossbar.

Minnesota State's second line was absolutely abuzz on their last shift. Jaremko won a puck battle in the far corner, and dished it over to Gerard along the far boards. Gerard then whistled a cross-ice pass to Lutz at the near circle, whose one-timer went just wide. Jaremko gathered the missed attempt in the far corner, skated behind the UND net for a wraparound attempt, that Scheel read, but the puck squirted back out to the bottom of the far circle, and to Gerard's stick who let a snap shot go, but Scheel got back in position to glove it to keep North Dakota's championship hopes alive.

After some up and down action, both teams have tightened back up, and lots of neutral zone action currently on display.

North Dakota mounting some pressure here now as we approach the midpoint of the extra frame. Minnesota State doing a good job though of keeping the opportunities to the outside. Best chance for the Fighting Hawks was on Cole Smith's wrister from the near circle that deflected off a Maverick defender. Senden nearly got to the loose puck in the slot, but his wrister attempt coincided with Mackey getting a stick on the puck, which lifted it into the netting behind the Mavs net.

Shane Pinto with a great opportunity to win it for North Dakota. Weatherby won a loose puck in the near corner, and found Pinto at the top of the slot. Pinto one-timed the puck on frame, but McKay got his stick over in time, deflecting the puck out of play again.

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL. GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLL. GOOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLL. Connor Mackey wins it for Minnesota State with 9:28 left to play in OT!

McNeely gathered control of the puck in his own end, and found Gerard along the far boards, and Gerard skated the puck into the attacking zone. Gerard then dumped the puck behind the North Dakota net, and Jaremko took possession. Jaremko skated to the far side of the net, and cycled the puck back behind the net and into the near corner where Lutz took possession. Lutz then passed the puck back to Mackey at the point. Mackey floated over to the top of the slot, and sent a wrister on net that drifted through traffic and past a screened Scheel and into the back of the net. The Mavericks swarm the ice, piling on Mackey, and the Mavs faithful erupt in elation.

Final: North Dakota 3-4 Minnesota State

Its not fair, dammit.

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

OK. Now lets do this again for real next year in Pittsburgh.

And I'm guessing that Drydon McKay, will get cheated out of the Richter because he plays for a good team. He certainly played a big part in this win.

Crap!
Congratulations Mavs. Great team all year long.
The Sioux will continue their run next year.
So it is!
