2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

North Dakota wins the offensive zone faceoff, and Frisch lets a wrister go from the point that I don't believe McKay saw, but fortunately for the fans in purple, he was in good position and got a pad on it and the Mavs cleared the puck into the neutral zone. Both teams really starting to get their engines running on this one, but no score yet.

GOOOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!! Jordan Kawaguchi!!

North Dakota gains the puck in the neutral zone and dumps it in for a line change. Grant Mismash wins a puck battle behind the Mavericks net, and passes the puck along the far wall out to Kiersted, who skates the puck out to the top of the far circle before dishing a beautiful feed over to Kawaguchi at the near circle, who one-times the puck top shelf past McKay's glove, and the North Dakota Fighting Hawks strike first tonight!

Minnesota State pushing back following Kawaguchi's goal, and Lutz nearly knotted the score. Lutz got a pass in the neutral zone and pushed up along the near boards and behind North Dakota's net. Lutz then dished the puck out to Hookenson at the point, who passed it over to Zmolek. Smolek skated to the top of the slot and let go a snap shot that meandered through traffic and Scheel just got a piece of the puck with his leg, but the rebound went straight to Lutz at the bottom of the far circle. Lutz flipped a wrister over the outstretched Scheel, but the puck fluttered over the net. North Dakota narrowly escapes disaster.

The Mavericks are headed back to the powerplay. Shane Pinto and the Mavs hero from Thursday Nick Rivera got caught up in the neutral zone. Rivera chopped at Pinto's leg, and Pinto retaliated with a cross check that sent Rivera back down to the ice. Pinto gets two minutes for cross checking, and Minnesota State is back on the man advantage.

Scheel robs Gerard! The Mavs won the offensive zone draw and zipped the puck from tape to tape all around the North Dakota offensive zone. Finally, Smith caught the puck at the near circle, and flipped a beautiful saucer pass over to Gerard at the far circle, and Girard lasered a one-timer that looked destined for the back of the net. Unfortunately for the Mavs, Scheel slid over just far enough so that his outstretched glove robbed Gerard of the tying goal. Mavericks are dominating on this powerplay thus far, but unable to sneak one by Scheel.

I think I heard that same thing a couple times this season.

Pinto needs to have a Snickers bar before every game!

Minnesota State unable to capitalize yet again on the man advantage, and North Dakota kills off another penalty.

Wow. North Dakota almost pushes ahead by two goals. Weatherby gains control of a loose puck at his own blue line, finds Michaud streaking along the far boards who edges past the Minnesota State defender, but unable to get a shot off as it deflects into the far corner. However, Michaud quickly gains control of the puck, and finds Pinto streaking into the slot. Pinto wastes little time and fires a wrister that McKay gets his blocker to in the nick of time to keep the Mavericks within one.

North Dakota pushing hard for the two-goal advantage, but the Mavs really limiting North Dakota to the perimeter again. Cole Smith sends a long wrister from the near boards that McKay easily gloves.

And we're through 20 minutes of play in the National Championship game. North Dakota has the lead, but Minnesota State probably had the better opportunities. Pretty even game, and through one period of play:

North Dakota 1-0 Minnesota State

Re: 2020 NCAA Hockey Tournament - What If: A Simulation of the 2019-2020 Postseason

SOG after the 1st:
Minnesota State 11 - 10 North Dakota

Key factor in the first period: Minnesota State 0-2 on the powerplay. They can't let those opportunities slip by if they want to hoist a trophy this evening.
