2020 Democratic Challengers

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers

I quit on America if it's Trump vs. Oprah, but I did get a good laugh out of Orange Droolius' response about she's a friend and it would be a great challenge.

IIRC, he was a guest on her show several times.

My gf has always wanted to live in France and her parents have friends there and means...if it is Trump vs Oprah I will finally capitulate and do it. Not hyperbole, I will walk away from America because this country is screwed. There wont be Keplers "existential threat" because much like every horro film the call will be coming from inside the house. (the threat will be Americans as a whole)

Thankfully, I dont think it will ever happen.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers

If the Dems nominate Oprah, the American Republic has finally failed, and we would have been better off staying British, since at least they learned to keep their celebrities powerless instead of giving them the launch codes. We would fail within a generation if we're running celebrities with no experience against each other.

Let the Presidents wave in parades while the VP (renamed Prime Minister) does the work, I guess.

This guy gets it...

Lucky you have an out. Probably not as easy as you might think, but an out nonetheless.

I swear if Dump wins again I will biitchslap each and every one of you.

Rover's not right about much. Actually, Rover's never been right about anything before. But Rover's right about this. This one time, if you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem.

Half of these posters are going to be right wing by the time they're 50 anyways.

I think you're way off on this Handy. Not that I want Oprah to be President anymore than I would want Donald Trump to be President, but all elections have always been popularity contests. Even between people who are "politicians" instead of celebrities, we frequently talk about name recognition as a factor in the election.

Why do you have to be a politician to become elected President? We elected Eisenhower who was nothing more than a celebrity general.

The thing is, if Donald Trump were not corrupt, and if he had done what he said he was going to do and appoint talented, honest, "the best" people into his cabinet and other government positions, a "celebrity" president would work out just fine. Might even actually be a good President, since a lot of what we rely upon them for is to lead the country where it needs to go by persuasion from the "bully pulpit." If Oprah can convince millions of people to buy some stupid book, maybe she can convince the country we need universal health care or a change in the social security system, or whatever.

The problem is not having a celebrity president, or one with zero political experience. The problem is electing one who is corrupt and will only appoint corrupt toadies to his administration.

Eisenhower may have actually been our most qualified president: his experience was managing an enormous bureaucracy and juggling the egos of a thousand prima donnas, all with the direst stakes and serious issues of time and resources.

Lawyers should be legislators, philosophers should be judges, scientists should be advisors. Leaders should be presidents. Leadership is porn: it defies description yet you know it when you see it.

But all of these people should also be deeply educated in the traditions and the history of the American Constitutional system. The only presidents we have had in the last fifty years who answer that description are Nixon, Clinton, and Obama. And the difference between them points out the other essential factor: presidents should be ethical and mentally stable.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers

To the contrary, I came from the religious right wing.

Relax.

Its a statistical fact. If the Trump/Clinton election age statistics hold, over 40% of Democrat male voters in their 20s and 30s will switch to become Republican voters when they're over 50. And I would bet large sums of money that most here are guys and that my prior statement is correct.

Uh, Kep, James Earl Carter on line one for you buddy; and, regarding your comment on Mr. Clinton, there's a Ms. Lewinsky on line two. She's wondering if you can recommend a dry cleaner.

I believe that's the old saw ... about age, heart, and mind.

You deeply misunderstood my comment.

When I first read that concluding sentence, I stayed in "50 year" context; you gear shifted to a comparison between just the three you named. Now I understand what you're saying, but I still believe you are short-changing Mr. Carter.

Carter didn't have a solid background in con law as far as I know.

I think you know what I meant about The Three Worthies:

Obama: con law, ethical, stable
Clinton: con law, stable
Nixon: con law

Carter was ethical and stable but he fails on the first requirement, con law. Again, as far as I know.

Recent presidents graded on the three requirements, con law in bold:

3 FDR
2 Truman
2 Eisenhower
2 Kennedy
1 Nixon
2 Ford
2 Carter
1 Reagan
1 Bush Sr.
2 Clinton
1 Dubya
3 Obama

Better chance you get shot by one of those bullets whizzing by you on 394 than I ever become a Republican. You just really enjoy making ridiculous posts that have no basis in logic or fact dont you? I know I enjoy making you look foolish over them :D
