However, it is important to note that Lincoln himself proposed phasing out slavery through the year 1900 and compensating slaveholders for their losses. Are we going to pony up for them too, in order to keep with honest Abe's vision?

But please...keep telling us about how Reparations are going to save the Black Man. We dont need to actually fix the problem we can just pay them for their time served (kinda like prison) and everything will be golden! While we are at it we should probably do the same for the 5 Native Americans left in each state and all the Chinese and Asians we systemically killed over time.

I am not debating you. There is no debate. I dont care what Booker said if it has anything to do with Reparations...literally anything he is wrong. The idea is stupid. It means well, in theory it is great, in practice it will blow up so ****ed badly in the faces of everyone who blathers on about it that it isnt even funny. I am sure what he said is quite reasoned, I bet he is impassioned and I dont doubt he brings up excellent points. If the bottom line is any sort of Reparations it isnt worth reading outside of a classroom or a meeting of the Editors of Mother Jones.

I am not wound up, I am laughing at you and trix like I laugh at undergrads that spend an hour telling people why Communism can really work and give all sorts of great reasoned examples. They always leave the one thing out that gets in the way of the argument...human beings ruin everything.

In the "Magical World of If" I support Reparations for everyone we wronged. I also support the Swiss Banks being forced to give back every dollar, piece of Gold and family heirloom they stole...errr...accumulated in and after WW2. I support the Vatican being forced to give back everything they have stolen over the years. Problem is in the real world that just isnt possible nor is it going to happen.

Paris France 1919: The USCHO Liberal Brigade were the guys in the Government after WW1 that wanted to make Germany pay dearly for the War. You would have been frothing at the mouth to punish them because they were scum and we beat them. (you know like you say about every group you dislike...even when they are on your side ) In theory great plan...punish them to high heaven so they never dare do it again and make an example out of them to show the world what happens when you try and conquer the West. I think we all see in hindsight why that wouldnt work.

None of this is personal to me, I am just saying Reparations in any form are a stupid idea. Fix the actual problem and make things better.

This is why I was happy when Bernie asked what reparations even means because you're right, the focus should be on creating a more equitable/meritocratic society. I think we all know that just handing people huge lump sums of cash isn't going to work or happen nor has anyone really suggested it. Booker's plan I believe is via the issuance of bonds and savings accounts for lower income children to help decrease the racial wealth gap. IDK if that's good enough on its own and I'd need to see more studies that this is an effective way of handling the issue but it's certainly not as bad as the reaction we've seen over the past 2 pages would warrant either.

Someone linked to an article that said he recently introduced a bill. Fade asked a question about whether it involved issuing checks. dx posted he was opposed to the outright issuance of checks, and the rest of us proceeded to comment on that subject.

Is this the first time discussion on this board has gone off on a tangent different than the subject of the original post?
