2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

I mean they should and I assume most will release a decade or so. The tax deadline for this year isn't even here yet though and I believe candidates waited longer in 2016 to release them so for now it's just a disingenuous talking point being applied to one candidate.

That's a good point. What are we going to troll Bernouts with next when he somehow dodges or gets a pass on this one? We've already covered misogyny, vacation homes, taxes, loan fraud committed by a spouse...

Does Bernie have any dead women or live teenage boys in his closet? He's not a Kennedy or a priest, so I'm guessing no. :p

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

Yes its a valid point that everyone should be held to the same standard but at the same time Bernie has been promising to release his taxes "shortly" for 3 years now. If he doesn't want to, that's his right but otherwise I'm not sure why he's letting this issue linger for as long as it has.

I don't care for Sanders' actions on this. I like Bernie but this whole thing has stunk. When your brand is radical authenticity then FFS don't so blatantly undercut yourself.

And at bottom the question is: why? I doubt he's got offshore accounts in the Caymans or some such hypocrisy. He's had solid democratic socialist street cred for 40 years. So again... why? It just seems like a spectacular own goal.

I don't get it but at this point he's turning himself into a fraud. Makes me even angrier cause I had gotten over 2016 and had been posting nice things about him.

Live boys gets you a 5-point bump in the current Democratic party, not to mention a boner from every closeted Republican and evangelist.

Silver lining is his window is closed and this erodes his support on the left from people like, well, me, so that's good. Democratic socialism is the wave of the future, first for the Dems, then for the USA, then for the West. Every interesting up and coming politician has staked out territory near or even farther left than Bernie. He's a trillion year old white male. He's not the future. He's proto- and in the miserable annals of the Earth he will be duly enshrined. He has seen the montaintop but he aint getting there.

He's literally stated that he's going to release them on April 15th (the day they're actually due). Also where are the returns of Beto, Booker, gropey Joe, Harris, and Pete? Or do we just not care about those?

Another scorching hot take lmao

No. It is our business.

You want to live in a Banana Republic you go right ahead. Not me.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_of_Nobility_Clause

The emoluments clause argument is such weak sauce.

That clause was written into the original constitution. By my count there were 27 Presidents elected (and subject to the emoluments clause) before the first tax return was even invented in this country. Even then we went another 60 years with no presidential tax returns disclosed, until someone leaked Nixon's.

Weak sauce, ay.

Keep carrying his water. The most unethical President in US History.

I'm not carrying anybody's water. If Bernie or Beto or the other 697 Democrats running for President refuse to publicly disclose their tax returns, good for them. Maybe then we can finally kill this as a "real" issue.

Sure, and that would be fine. But, the two people refusing to release their returns also are LYING about why they're not releasing them. If your glorious President would just tell the truth about why he's not releasing them I would not have a problem with it.

But, alas, you like all the lying. That's why you're defending him.

All I can think of is that he's filing a joint return and his wife has made a ton of money recently (within the past 10 years). Or that he's never made a charitable donation or something like that. I don't think he's written a book recently nor do I think he's inherited a windfall so I'm struggling to think of something else. Oh, and trix, while his own taxes aren't due until the 15th for the previous year (talk about going down to the wire, does he do them himself? :D) he could release 10 previous years for example no problem one would assume.

He probably does do them himself, I just filed mine this weekend so it's not unheard of to wait to do them. Either way it sounds like he's going to release them then.

He did come out with the Our Revolution book after 2016.

Not releasing the returns in 2016 didn’t make sense and it makes even less sense now. Unless there’s something in there that totally kills your message, there’s no reason for anyone running not to release them.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Who ISN'T Running At This Point?

Same here. I want to 1) win and then 2) enact as much progressive stuff as I can. Obama's presidency is a good proxy for that as was Clinton's although in Clinton's case I think the GOP has changed too much from working with a Dem to now being a treasonous money laundering cult.

Problem with the far left is they're rather lose to make a point under the belief that the status quo is as bad as it can possibly get.

Agreed.

Normally I would have had Kep's take on this which is I'm not expecting to see anything in there. But I go back to the experience with my preferred candidate (Warren). Back when she ran for Senate the Native American thing came up and I took her at her word that she may have claimed ancestry once when she got her professor job at Harvard but she did it on a lark and it didn't further her career.

Come to find out she not only did that more than once, she only owned up to it after being forced to do so by new information. I'm still voting for her as the best candidate IMO but that was a horrible unforced error regarding credibility that I fear she won't recover from unfortunately. I don't mind giving Sanders the benefit of the doubt but he has to put this to bed now. If he needs until the end of the week so be it but if we get another delay its time to start considering that he's hiding something embarrassing.

I usually wait as well. Usually just file an extension anyways.

I'm finally using an accountant. Did mine for 30 years but enough already.
