I think this is worth a listen. Mayor Pete probably doesn't have a chance if he ever gets around to officially entering the race, but Democrats could do worse. And they probably will.
During the Q and A portion he was asked about how he would address the issue of how Reagan and his allies so effectively convinced the electorate to move to the right and how he could convince the voters government itself was not the real problem.
It's 38 minutes long, but before you're tempted to waste a half hour watching CNN, watch this instead.

Oprah is not Trump, but yes I agree it would be a terrible idea, which is why I hope Kep was completely joking.
FWIW, a Biden/black woman ticket is also a bad idea. Talk about reeking of tokenism. I can already envision tons of American women going on-and-on about "Creepy Uncle Joe", and whining about how the woman isn't at the top of the ticket like Hillary was, and therefore the Dems are just pandering for their votes. It's already giving me a headache thinking about it.
Oprah is not Trump, but yes I agree it would be a terrible idea, which is why I hope Kep was completely joking.

As of 3/5/2019, I think the best ticket would be Klobuchar/Beto. Beto is a good charismatic balance to Hillbot 2.0. But I generally think female/either would be a smart ticket. I just don’t like Harris, Gillibrand, or Warren as top-of-the-ticket. Gillibrand is just the worst kind of canibalistic opportunist, so screw her.
Abrams would make a good choice, but I agree with you that it will come off tokenism. Keep her in mind for the future of the party.

How bad? Trump bad? Cruz bad? Everything is relative.
If, for discussion purposes, Oprah was the only D candidate that could win the white house. Then, I think not bad.
A couple weeks back, I put my preference as ORourke/Klobuchar - we need midwest electoral votes. But yeah, Beto was MIA for quite awhile.

Klobuchar as of right now, needs to be on that ticket.
As far as Oprah, she could be as bad as Trump, just not in a deliberate sense. She wouldn't know what the hell she was doing, whereas with Trump, SOMETIMES he knows what he is doing and it's horrible on purpose.

No offense to Mayor Pete but this is a fundamental misreading of history, as well as a worrisome sign that we should compete for voters who bought into Reagan's schtick. Those people, who are now in their 70's are long, long gone from any reasoning or convincing and are now bedrock Trump supporters.
Reagan did not fundamentally alter politics. Conservatism rose with the assent of whiny self centered Baby Boomers becoming the largest block of voters coupled with Silent Generation loons starting in the 70's, while the Greatest Generation, who's earliest members would have been born in 1910 and who remember the shared sacrifice and govt involvement of the Great Depression-WWII era retreated from the scene. This is why Nixon managed to win 49 states 8 years before Reagan's election. Being a Republican isn't a persuadable political ideology. Its a cult. Reagan didn't convince people to start thinking only of themselves and to embrace bigotry or racial stereotypes. They already were like that and while he used his considerable communication skills to harness that energy he wasn't the cause of it.

Mine was more a comment on Tulsi than Oprah.
My dream is you put a hood ornament like Oprah on the ticket to win the lofos, then replace her with somebody brilliant but unelectable to actually do the work. Smuggle smart people into positions in a democracy without frightening off the herd.

Agreed on Gillibrand and Warren. Gillibrand is exactly what the Dems dont need at the top of the ticket. Abrams needs more time before she is viable but she is definitely meant for higher office.

That's not true at all. The flyovers insist on representation but the coasts are self-assured -- we know where the power really is, whatever the talking hairpiece is. It's like Boston vs New York. Boston marches through the streets with torches screeching "pay attention to me!!!!" as New York thinks briefly to itself, "did I just hear the pipes burp?," and then goes back to whatever it was doing.
