Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Boogaloo

2 I think Keps and my plan was superior to that piece of garbage that was enacted.
3 if limited to community college or the cost of the the first 2 years of the "official" state college. You're not getting free private college.

1 is a bottomless cash pit. No.
2. I agree. I liked your plan better.
3. Yes. Community or Tech School. No private colleges.
1. We'll get there eventually no matter what. It's time for some good ideas.

So is our current system.

If the cost of single payer is < Medicaid + Medicare + private insurance + self-insured/self-paid + unpaid ER bills, then it's a net plus.

Hint: it is.

2 years of community college or a trade school should be part of public education in addition to pre-k through 12

Playing devils advocate... is tuition at a community college a real impediment for anyone who wants to attend? Just picking one and looking at their website, tuition at Mass Bay Community College is $212 per credit. Is that really insurmountable for anyone who wants to attend? (And it appears they offer financial aid to some if needed)

No it isnt which is why it wouldnt be that big of a deal for it to be paid for by the government.

Meh. Personally I’d rather allocate those dollars to our existing public education. If someone wants to go to community college they can have a few thousand bucks if skin in the game.

I think community college or trade school should be the minimum education level attained. It should be part of the standard education track.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Boogaloo

The government used to fund four year universities far better back in the day which is part of why they were more affordable. Cal was free to attend up until the 70’s I believe as were a number of other universities.

And that's really what has happened. And because we as a society started telling everyone that they need to go to college to be employed there has been a massive inflationary effect.

If you want a robust economy you cannot handcuff your workers with mountains of debt while at the same time having all the baby boomers retire. It's going to be a disaster if we don't do something.

What should Democrats run on?

1. Single Payer Health Reform
2. Real Tax Reform. Not that BS the Republicans just passed.
3. Free Two Years of college. Drastically reduce the interest rate on ALL remaining college debt.

I would be running on those three items right now. And I'd be hammering them over and over and over again.

If it’s 3 mookie wants a refund for all the loans he paid off. F that

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Boogaloo

Anyone’s company is not passing health ins savings on to you. :)

Yup, and while I think single payer advocates are well meaning, they really need to not promise that employers will bump up workers paychecks by the amount of savings they reap from not having to provide health insurance. If you see 1% of that savings consider yourself lucky. Only way to guarantee getting that money back is to jack up employer payroll taxes accordingly which may be the way to go.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Boogaloo

My point is that we’re spending a crap ton now and it’s not being done in the best way. The people who generally tell me how terrible single payer is are people who have never spent a day working in one

That mindset won't help anything. MSU just announced the bus system will now be free. Should I demand my 300 bucks back I spent on passes?

Tuition has doubled or almost doubled in the past 15 years depending on the school. There needs to be some type of reduction in the cost of education. Balking at what much of the western world does just because "I had to get loans" isn't going to lead to progress on this issue.

Re: 2020 Democratic Challengers: Boogaloo

Mookie went through his reform for education couple weeks ago. Need for “college ed” in most jobs can be completed in high school now (or should be).

There’s your free college.

I know my employer is paying $20,000 for my insurance. The list it out as part of my total compensation -- each year the mail me something that shows how much they pay me in salary, towards my retirement, health insurance, life insurance. If we get single payer, and if it is not largely paid pay a payroll tax on the employer, you better believe I expect a pay bump or else I'll find a company that _will_ pay me more.

There’s your free college.

Then get the corporate world to change their attitude regarding hiring practices. An entry level position shouldn't be saddled with requirements of a Masters, 10 years career experience, two professional certifications, oh and they're only paying $11.50/hr 35/hr weeks max.

Your first point is 100% correct. I have no problem supporting a candidate who's goal is single payer. The issue though with actually implementing single payer is how to pay for it, and that's when Gooper cult members will have a field day. For me, I'd really like to see a real life, US based example, of this working in practice. I mention this because places like Vermont and Colorado tried to do so and had to abandon it due to costs which isn't giving me the warm and fuzzies about getting it off the ground.

God forbid, but in lieu of setting up a true single payer system, or in the meantime while smarter people than I figure that out, I'd like to see a big Medicare/Medicaid expansion. In my view Medicare gets extended as a buy in for the AARP crowd (50+) since they're most likely to lose their jobs late in their careers but are too young to access the current system. Also as a side benefit it cuts Republicans balls off, as these are generally their supporters. Next I'd allow anybody being subsidized on ACA exchanges to simply pay the same rate as their spending now for Medicaid coverage if they so choose. I'd pay for it by socking corporations and the wealthy with higher payroll taxes, essentially clawing back the tax giveaway they recently received and then some.

Good luck with that is all I have to say. If they're all working in lockstep, I'm really not sure where you plan on going. There's very, very little chance you see the benefit in your comp unless you're a shareholder benefiting from stock buybacks and dividends. I'm sorry as I don't think that's right, but any CEO who tries to send that money back to you will be fired immediately by the board of directors. How much money did you received from the recent corporate tax cuts? That's your template for what would happen here unless a law mandated it.
