2019-20 pwr

Re: 2019-20 pwr

Gotcha. For some reason I thought LFC still technically led the NCHA but you are absolutely correct. The only reason I thought Utica led the UCHC is because the UCHC website has it listed that way. It will all shake out soon enough and I am still optimistic the west will secure 4 bids.

The RS standings mean nothing, as you know. Why even reference them?

All that matter are the AQ's, as far as conference play goes.

And may the best 8th place team "earn" a bid!

Re: 2019-20 pwr

Even then, what do you have? Syracuse. That's it.

St. John's isn't anything like they used to be. Buffalo? Not really. Albany? Binghamton? St. Bonaventure? Iona? Manhattan? Colgate? Cornell? All non-entities these days in the college basketball world.

You don't think that all the downstate talent would stay close to home if NY was one of the few States to allow paid endorsements..?

Hell, even Marist might land 5-star guys in that situation.

You're totally missing altazo's point. For the mock brackets -- the key word is mock -- we have to go on the assumption the first place team gets the AQ. altazo was questioning the last mock bracket -- the key word is mock -- who was actually the first place team to get the AQ in the mock bracket -- the key word is mock.

Only St. John's would benefit. No other school is going to benefit for a few reasons -- 5-star talent is still going to look at the long term, and that's going to a top flight school to get NBA scouts interested in you down the road. Plus, other states will have these type of laws as well, and why would a downstate local kid stay in the state to attend a two-bit BB school when he can go out of state, still make the money the laws allow, and go to a premier school. Kind of what happens right now.

Re: 2019-20 pwr

Imagine TX and FL following suit... Bedlam.

Florida is looking at it.. from yesterday:

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Despite concerns about college sports in Florida being harmed, a proposal that would allow student-athletes to market themselves off the field is now moving forward in the Senate and House.

The Senate Education Committee on Monday unanimously backed a bill (SB 646), filed by Sen. Debbie Mayfield, R-Rockledge, that is similar to a House measure (HB 7051). The House bill has been characterized as a “bill of rights” for Florida college athletes in outlining how they can earn compensation for their “name, image, likeness or persona.”

Re: 2019-20 pwr

This whole thing leads me to think of the potential for interference/corruption on the part of boosters. A recruit is choosing between Florida and Florida State. A big Florida booster who has a used car business can offer a recruit a substantial income from starring in commercial for his dealership. A big Florida State booster has a chain of restaurants and makes an offer of equal income from making commercials for his restaurants. A Gainsville Real Estate broker jumps in with an additional offer, and so it goes. Nike sweetens the pot. If you think the corruption by the shoe companies is an issue, wait until this explodes. Maybe the NCAA will limit endorsement solicitation of recruits, but chances are that such rules will either be ineffective or just found to be illegal interference with commerce. The idea may be well intentioned, but the fallout may be far from desirable.

Fortunately, they (states, NCAA) have a couple years to figure it out. From what I read, Florida is looking at morality clauses first--eliminating likeness tied to casinos, alcohol and the like. I would think the regulations will have to be sweeping to guard against possible and likely booster corruption. Big football money down here. And let's not forget the most honest group in sports--agents. I'm sure they are watching all of this with anticipation$.

That is optimistic. Giving the NCAA two years to figure something out is like giving a remedial math student two years to solve a calculus problem. Name something the NCAA has solved.

My opinion was predicated on NY being one of the few States to do it. Few, as in: not many; just a few. If most States allow endorsements, sure, you never know where a kid might go... But I was talking a few.

Not to mock, Russ. ;)

Everybody gets found today in a big-money sport like hoops. An elite player couldn't hide even if he wanted to.

Circle the date on the calendar, Prof: I agree with you completely. It's going to be a white-hot mess with too many moving parts to possibly monitor.

An elite hoops player is a 'one and done' so the ruling really wouldn't affect college basketball. And if Lebron gets his way, none of these guys will go to college before the NBA. College football is a different story, big money, multiple years.

True. But I think the initial program will be very restrictive.

I agree re: hoops right now... But the NFL can easily institute something analogous to the NBA's D-League.

And every Alabama-type recruit will sign-up yesterday.

The NFL has absolutely no interest in doing this. Absolutely none. They can get it all for free with the NCAA. No incentive whatsoever for the NFL to set this up.

True. But your slot in the draft could be affected, and in the long run (at least for your first contract) that can mean more money lost then possibly gained short term from the college.

Re: 2019-20 pwr

True and they did try it, remember NFL Europe...

The NFL Europe wasn't a response to a sea-change in the business model. That was simply an attempt to expand the sport (er,the revenue).

Times could well change in a drastic manner, if the the NCAA becomes a free-for-all. I promise you that the NFL will look for another cut if there's no realistic way to control the college game...

And funding a D-league would amount to pocket change for that billion-dollar business. The NFL won't blink an eye via that one.

If California gets this thing in place, it's going to blow up the NCAA one way or the other, IMO. Drafts will matter only as far as the D-leagues go. Rookie contracts will likely be more lucrative. Who knows what other ramifications will ensue.

Might be as fun to watch as a good train-wreck. :)

Re: 2019-20 pwr

If the season ended today, we'd be looking at:

Plymouth @ Endicott vs (1) Norwich

Augsburg @ Lake Forest vs (4) UW-Eau Claire

Adrian @ Hobart vs (3) SUNY Geneseo

Williams @ Wilkes vs (2) Utica
