2019-20 NMU Hockey Season

Re: 2019-20 NMU Hockey Season

This weekend, NMU takes on Mankato.

Long odds, but anything can happen.

I think Northern has the offense needed to win. They can score, 3rd in the conference, 14th in the country. I don't think a team can out-defend us and beat us in a low scoring game. Tech is excellent defensively, but we scraped together enough goals to win those games. But we're struggling a little to score right now, particularly 5v5, so if Northern can get the offense they've been getting, a 4-2 type win is a distinct possibility.

Northern's scoring papered over a lot of cracks on the back end early in the season. Both Kent and Hawthorne have given up some shaky goals at times, and I'm not yet convinced about the blue line, especially in transition. The Mavericks have shown a penchant for exploiting the weaknesses of their opponents in the games I have watched this season, and NMU had better step it up in their own end to have a chance to get anything out of this weekend. And another slow start will only make that more difficult.

Northern can't be Cardiac Cats against Mankato. I really see this as a character building weekend, but hey, anything can happen.

Mankato looks like they're not going to lose another game until this October.

Need to just forget tonight's outcome and prepare for tomorrow.

Potulny’s post-game quotes were interesting on that, “That’s not what we’re teaching,” or something to that effect. Interesting to see if he makes a lineup change tonight.

Not likely. Every healthy skater was dressed with 2D playing forward and no extra skater.

In any case, I’m glad to hear that response from a coach. It’s a sharp contrast to a coach we faced earlier in the year, who placed all the blame on the refs. Maybe that’s why ASU is perpetually among the leaders in PIMs, and has earned a rep as a dirty team.
Anyway I think Potulny is going to have a long and successful coaching career.
