I don't math, but I feel like 538 was right about the election. Hilly had a 3-in-4 chance. Trump & Comey pulled off the upset unwittingly. Slight shakeup in turnout and Hilly wins three straight. Trump got less votes than Mitt.

Yep. Their predictions matched the popular vote margin fairly closely.

Move 100,000 votes in the midwest (PA,WI,MI)around and Comey would be arriving for Senate discussions on President Clinton's emails today.

A glimmer of hope for '18.

The chi'ren turned out for Labour after decades of, well, sitting on their dainty little behinds, much like our own. Chi'ren, not behinds. Although...

The Beeb had analysts saying Trump may have affected the result, since the International Middle Finger is now anthropomorphized as a rotting orange f-ckweasel rather than someone pretty like, I dunno, this or this or this.

Maybe Donald Trump saved democracy. By being not only an epic f-ckup but also the world's most repellent vertebrate, maybe he is helping people turn from the Neo-30s abyss.

At best, it's only temporary. Right now there's a young, smart evil Republican who is learning from Trump's mistakes. He's coming, and we'll be wishing for Trump, like we'd rather have Bush right now.

She's been sullied by her father(in more ways than one, probably). It was smart of her to cast herself as the reasonable one, but even if the deep thinkers in their base can't see through the comical, completely transparent "Ivanka really tried, you guys" articles that show up in the New York Times every time dad does something awful, the effect of having to play that card so often makes her look incredibly weak and ineffectual. And that is something the set that is clamoring to be ruled by a dictator cannot abide.

Plus, some day Trump's reign will end, whether it be impeachment, election, or nuclear annihilation. Whichever it is, I suspect he'll have made anyone with the Trump name far too radioactive to ever be a political player again.

This seems obvious to me. Special elections since 2016 are tracking with 2012 rather than 2016 results. So what's different between 2016 and 2017 but the same between 2012 and 2017?

Exactly. Hillary not being on the ballot.

2016 had nothing to do with Trump or the GOP. It was just a rejection of Hillary. In 2018 and 2020, don't run Hillary.

It's really not difficult.

She can (will) keep on believing it all her life. I'm sure Harold Stassen believed this was the year, each time.

As long as the DNC becomes disentangled from her crony network it doesn't matter.

Don't put a Democratic face in front of the teevee that's over 60.

My whole point is there's no issue. She gone.

We need a positive "brand identifier" going into 2018 and Newt's 1994 "Contract for America" is a great model. State generalized Democratic goals to attract the unhinged right to dispute them ("whaddya mean people have a right "to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures"? What are you HIDING?! MESSICANS AND A-RABS?!) and remind the left and center that government has useful functions and isn't just the lethal freak show they see every night on the right.

I think we both agree we do not just run this as a referendum on Trump because that doesn't get people to the polls. When they think about Trump most people don't want to vote, they want to get blackout drunk, and that's entirely reasonable behavior. So this can't be just a pushing election, we also need a pull. It isn't just "Save Obamacare and Planned Parenthood," it's "Let's have nice things again! Let's go for single payer and universal college education and jobs programs, and pay for it by taxing the 1% and ending the Forever Wars."

Defense doesn't win championships in politics, Offense does.

I agree that "Trump Sucks" isn't a platform. He does, but Dems need to do two things with that. 1) tie EVERY Republican to him and ruin the entire brand. Too many knucks' get away with disassociating themselves with him (Karen Handel being the latest) when in fact they're just as nutty as he is. 2) Articulate why you're opposing the jack @ ss based on Democratic party principles. But here's where you and I may differ. Pick ONE or TWO issues to say ONE thing about and that's it!!!! Keep it simple. The most obvious one is health care. The 2nd one is the rich paying their fair share.

On health care, the GOP has given the Dems an unexpected gift which is reminding people of the importance of entitlement programs in their own lives. Its astounding to me that they overreached on the Medicaid portion of their Trumpcare lunacy, even going beyond a simple ACA repeal in order to give massive cuts to billionaires. Dems must seize on this with a simple message, something like we plan on allowing people 50 and older to buy into Medicare, and those eligible for ACA subsidies to pay into Medicaid. Its simple, it moves more towards single payer, and it puts Goopers' balls in a vice since they have to tell their own voters who'd benefit from this why they oppose it.

On taxes, again keep it simple. Pick one thing to fund - either extra 2% tax hike on super rich pays for college tuition to state schools, or applying social security tax on upper income people to shore up program. That's it. No white papers, no essays until in office.

In 2006, Dems ran on two things. 1) Done with Iraq War. Didn't say how, didn't give timeline but it was a clear message. No more unchecked, unending war. The day after the election Rumsfeld was fired. 2) GOP congress was completely corrupt. Child molesting monster Dennis Hastert (although we didn't know it at the time) and his merry band of perverts, mistress chokers, bigamists, bribe takers, etc etc were out of control. That was all they ran on, and it worked. They need to do that again.
