2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season: Non-Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Re: 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season: Non-Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

How do you solve a problem like Tropical Storm Maria?

How do you find some shear and spin it down?

WaPo has the possibility of Jose and Maria doing the Fujiwara and tossing Jose into the DE/NJ coast.

2017 Hurricane Season: How many Caribbean Islands can be flattened?

Maria taking aim at the middle Leewards, and possibly straight over Puerto Rico. Expected to become a major tonight or early Tuesday.

Re: 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season: Non-Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Maria went to Cat 4 earlier today and just cracked Cat 5. Jeebus.

From the NHC:

...700 PM AST POSITION AND INTENSITY UPDATE...
...EXTREMELY DANGEROUS CATEGORY 5 HURRICANE MARIA STILL
STRENGTHENING...

Reports just received from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter
aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased
to 175 mph (280 km/h). The estimated minimum pressure based on
data from the aircraft is 909 mb (26.84).

A wind gust to 63 mph (102 km/h) was recently reported in the
eastern portion of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Right now, I'm a little selfish that the slight north turn is a good thing. My family will be hit a little less

The damage in Puerto Rico is unreal. Months before electricity will return. Wow

What/where was the L storm? We had H (Harvey), I (Irma), J (Jose), K (Katia), and M (Maria). Was L a Pacific Ocean storm?

You mean Hurricane Lee? It's out in the middle of the Atlantic. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/#Lee

There is a separate name list for the Eastern Pacific. They are currently up to the letter P, as Tropical Storm Pilar is very close to the southwest coast of Mexico.

Re: 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season: Non-Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

A month after Harvey and when my nieces were supposed to start school, they were off to their first day of 3rd grade today. They walked down the streets, still lined with the demolished interiors of neighborhood homes, to the park next to their school that was flooded. There, they were greeted by charter buses (the Houston school district is low on school buses) to take them and their classmates to a school a few miles away.

This is the reality in a middle class/upper middle class section of Houston a month later, I can't imagine the reality faced by poorer areas or the parts of the Caribbean that have basically been destroyed.

Tropical Depression 16 has formed in the southwestern Caribbean. It could be a threat to the Gulf this weekend.

You know it's been a pretty epic hurricane season when a strong category 1 hurricane making landfall on the gulf coast doesn't get a mention in this thread.
