2017-18 St. Cloud State Season Thread - Second Attempt

Re: 2017-18 St. Cloud State Season Thread - Second Attempt

So can we have Raboin, too, if Guentzel doesn't want to stick around as an assistant (rightfully so)?
Will it be Guentzel's decision if he stays, or not?

Please stop trying to make this about you.

Thank you.

How you feel about Bob, our community feels about Mike. He’s been a savior to our program and has the most wins in the NCAA since he took over.

He also happens to be an alum of your school, which is in a conference that is the best in the country, and denied his current school’s application.

Just as you didn’t want to lose Bob, we don’t want to lose Mike.

Mike will clearly be a top choice for St. Cloud as they move to fill their HC spot.

And Mike isn't gone yet, so keep your chicken little BS in the Mankato thread.

From another Husky whose alum coach has left for the B1G... We all feel your pain.

Re: 2017-18 St. Cloud State Season Thread - Second Attempt

I think Gibbons still lives in the metro area, so I am guessing he will be joining Bob at the U. That's going to be just as big of a loss IMO, because when he got here is when the program really took off.

Meh. Motzko was a good coach and it sucks to lose him, but it’s not like he took SCSU to the top. They made incremental improvement under Motzko’s reign and they’ll continue to do so with the next coach.

Re: 2017-18 St. Cloud State Season Thread - Second Attempt

Eric Rud?

He hasn't even been able to coach the women's team to a .500 record. If we bring back someone from that staff it should be Harbinson, at least he has proven he can win.

As Weems and others have said, this is an elite program. We should have a pretty impressive pool of candidates. Reaching out for the nearest coach with ties to the university isn't the best way to go about it.

Re: 2017-18 St. Cloud State Season Thread - Second Attempt

My choices to replace Motzko are as follows

1a. Mike Hastings - He has proven to be a pretty good coach and he is an alum. He has made it clear that he wants to be in the NCHC. He would have to really want the job, as he has a pretty good contract and we wouldn't be able to pay him much more than he is already making. I would put my confidence level of him leaving Mankato at 30%.

1b. Mike Gibbons - Keeping Gibbons and Raboin would be an attractive option to me, as this is probably the coaching hire most likely to keep the players here that are on the fence about returning. We should have just as good a chance next year to win a title as we did this year, if not better, escpecially if we can keep Eyssimont, Schuldt or both. Gibbons is a fantastic recruiter, and I believe he has earned a shot to be the head coach of a team. I don't know what Rabz aspirations are, if he would stay on as an assistant or not. He probably isn't ready to be a coach in the NCHC yet, but could be a few years down the line.

Mike Guentzel and Grant Potulny would be ok options, but I wouldn't want to hire a guy that would just leave when the Gophers job opens up.

I am seeing people throw out Parrish and Cullen and I think they should put the crack pipe down. Neither guy needs the money. Parrish couldn't even tolerate coaching a high school team, so I don't see him having the dedication to coach college hockey. Cullen's NHL career isn't even over yet, he has no coaching experience, and I don't think he even graduated from SCSU. We are hiring a coach, not a team mascot.

Gwoz wouldn't be a terrible hire. Not sure he has the recruiting connections anymore but you aren't going to find anyone with a better resume.

Agreed on Hastings. Wish we could pay more, but I don't see that happening. I'd argue SCSU is a bigger/better job than Mankato with the NCHC piece being a big part of it but it isn't as wide as it used to be. I know Mankato got shot down last year along with ASU. Still seems like ASU will be a no go for the coming years. Only way Mankato gets in is with a partner. Are there any other likely candidates? Bemidji? Only for the travel piece but beyond that, I don't see the drivers of the league (UND and Denver) wanting them in. So does that leave Mankato on the outside looking in for the foreseeable future? Does that push Hastings a little big closer to the door?

I like the idea of keeping Gibbons/Raboin together. That would bring value when it comes to continuing what this program is. And maybe winning a few more NCAA games especially as a #1 seed.

Losing Bob hurts but I don't see this as the end of the program. Kids who weren't going to get offers to UMTC aren't all that more likely to start getting offers to go there. While we've seen an increase in higher end talent that leaves early, this is still a program that relies on and appeals to kids who end up playing the full four years. That doesn't change.

Just move relatively quickly to continue to move forward. Hopefully there are a few guys on the edge of leaving that will want to make another run at cleaning up some unfinished business.

Tippsy, Cullen has had a pretty good 2nd half of the NHL season. He's playing some good hockey lately. NO WAY he's leave the NHL.

Re: 2017-18 St. Cloud State Season Thread - Second Attempt

Ok, almost NO CHANCE he'd consider any job in NCAA hockey, but ****, I think Don Lucia would be a great hire for SCSU. I'm totally 100% serious about this, btw.

What better way to stick it to Gopher fans?! Lucia probably feels unappreciated, would give him extra motivation. But would you guys be willing to pay him enough?

Can't wait to see who you guys get. Very interesting off season, that's for sure.
