2017-18 Minnesota State Mavericks: Season Thread

Re: 2017-18 Minnesota State Mavericks: Season Thread

Pretty impressive team there. Not sure what the pollsters are looking at up to this point but they'll notice now.

Re: 2017-18 Minnesota State Mavericks: Season Thread

Thank you, Mav team and Mav fans, for a terrific weekend! Great hockey, great venue, and great cameraderie! Met Backes, Leitner, and Coach Hastings this weekend. Not the Holy Trinity, but not bad, either!

Re: 2017-18 Minnesota State Mavericks: Season Thread

And got to watch both games on legitimate, free streaming! Not bad quality, either. Tonight's game lost the audio for a bit, but they got it back. Amazing performance by our guys!

Their streaming service was amazing considering i have few to no glitches and the NBCSN doesnt play that well. I like the announcers too which lets be honest can kill a game listening to garbage play by play. Favorite was 1st game

Announcer 1 "we have WWE here eith some kids wrestling down there."
Announcer 2 "ill take the chubby one to win"

Absolute gem.
As for the games I'm not sure I've ever seen a Maverick team play two complete games and get a sweep against such an opponent. And what's even more impressive for me is that this is on the heels of losing 4 to 0 to St Cloud at home in the opener. Obviously these games will help us come March if bu does what's expected of them. Now I'd like to see how they respond after two big wins, you have your first conference games coming. If they continue to play like this they are going to be extremely difficult to beat.

Also McKay i thought did great in a few situations where he out muscled greenway who is NHL sized beast. For a freshamn D he definitely didnt give him anything

How do you guys think Spooner will be for you guys moving forward? Know him well as I coached him for 2 summers on a AAA team. Great kid.

Was very pleasantly surprised with his play this weekend. Saw him a little in the USHL and knew he was tough and smart, but didn't know if he could compete at the NCAA level. But a goal, 7 shots, and +2 on the weekend against a bunch of future NHLers shows that yeah, he can do it.

I like how Coach Hastings has brought in a bunch of Captains, like Spooner, from the USHL. Smart leaders ready to step in right away.

3 thoughts from this weekend:

1. WOW
2. It is amazing how easy it was to get into Agannis. City of Mankato should get with the people in Boston to learn how to do it.
3. Got to meet purpleinnebraska. Great to meet you and your daughter

Ditto on meeting you! My daughter said, "How could we go to these games for the last 5 years and not meet any of these people?" Not hanging out at the right places, I guess!

Good win for the boys last night. Need to clean up those dumb penalties but otherwise i thought they played well. Be interesting to see who is in goal tonight.

Nice sweep tonight against a great opponent. Tech will be there at the end of the season. Games are usually won by seizing opportunities when they present themselves which looks like that's what happened tonight. I like our early season ability to finish games so far.

Glad with the win but the refs get an assist. played well but once again stupid penalties. Can't keep getting 5 minute majors and its not like these are questionable calls. They were dominating the game Saturday before the 5 min.

Good start in conference play. Next 4 are big with NMU playing well and Bemidji is always a tough team and will be there at the end of they year.

On to NMU

Needed the sweep. Have to learn to stay out of the penalty box as it seems to be killing us lately. Penalty kill can only be so good.

Agree on the penalties, and from Hastings' comments, I'm guessing that will be a big point of emphasis this week.
I do think NMU could be in the running all year. This reminds me a lot of Hastings' 1st year. Good rookie coach whose predecessor left him some talent to work with. Losing to them was nothing shameful.

Re: 2017-18 Minnesota State Mavericks: Season Thread

Just got back from a weekend in Marquette. Found a couple of friendly Northern fans at 3rd Base and had a good time after the games.

Couple of thoughts:
While I don't think overall we played badly on Saturday, it's just that Northern Michigan played much better. And we cannot take silly penalties like holding in the offensive zone by Jaremko, after getting called for holding twice on Friday.

Northern Michigan clearly is a much better team and much better coached than last season.

Generally if you can win at home and split on the road, everyone will be very happy at the end of the season. We have done that so far.

On to my next road trip to Bemidji.

Well defensively we can be better but a sweep is great and ill take an offense putting up those type of #s against a team like bemidji who usually is defensively sound.

Next weekend series is a big one at home.

First place on the line. Should be some intense, physical hockey next weekend. Since it's Bowling Green, I'm predicting a split!

I think the Mavericks found their number one goalie this weekend. If he plays like he did Friday night and in relief on Saturday against Bemidji, I think the WCHA is yours for the taking.

The numbers are clearly in LaCouvee's favor, but Pawloski has 2 road shutouts, his only 2 wins. Pillows has also been dependable in the past, but I'd agree that maybe it's time to give the net to LaCouvee.

I like pawlowski and he can definitely be good but i also think that LaCouvee seems a little more solid in net. Id still give both a chance but by January id hope we have a #1.
Big games this weekend. Be nice to see a packed house this for both. Saturday has a chance to be rowdy especially if football wins.
