Morrisville is a good team but no way they’re top 8 in the East.

Re: 2017-18 DIII News, Game Notes, Etc

Conn is now ahead in the new ranking as they won 2/3 Primary criteria and the Secondary criteria.

Secondary is only taken into consideration if the other criteria are a tie. In this case it is not needed. At least that is the way it was explained previously.

Re: 2017-18 DIII News, Game Notes, Etc

It is numbers with the NCAA. Go to https://www.ncaa.com/rankings/icehockey-women/d3 and click on the East Public PDF and it will show you how the NCAA rankings are arrived at.

I disagree with how they arrived at those numbers. Morrisville is second in results vs ranked opponents, but they are 8th in In-Division win-loss percentage and 17th in Strength of Schedule. Hamilton should be 7th. Morrisville is 8th as all the other teams near them in In-Division Win-Loss % have no wins against ranked opponents.

Indeed it is not. Conn has 2 of 3 over Amherst in the primary criteria and is ranked ahead.

I just looked again at the sheet. Morrisville does win in win/loss % (.696 to .625)in division and resuls vs ranked opponents (.667 to .325). Hamilton wins in SOS (.547 to .508) Therefore Morrisville is ranked ahead of Hamilton because the secondary is not considered.

Conn. is ranked ahead without considering the secondary criteria.

like I said...better record and swept them, so impossible [except in hockeyeastland] to get ranked behind them

Re: 2017-18 DIII News, Game Notes, Etc

Today should be the start of some good playoff games, though things will really pick up in the second round. I'm especially looking forward to Amherst-Williams and Hamline-Augsburg. Anyone predicting upsets in these early rounds?

Nothing I would consider an upset so far. Only two road victories were a 3 seed beating a 2 seed (though it was a blowout by Oswego over Buff State) and a 5 over 4 seed in Bowdoin's victory over Hamilton 3-1. Plymouth State kept it a one goal game until midway through the 3rd when Norwich pulled away with two goals.

Conference final matchups so far:

NEWHL: Oswego vs Plattsburgh
NEHC: UMB vs Norwich
MIAC: Hamline vs GAC
WIAC: UWRF vs UWEC

Re: 2017-18 DIII News, Game Notes, Etc

Alvernia University in Reading, PA, a member of the MAC, will add a DIII women's team in Fall 2019. The Golden Wolves will presumably become the fifth MAC school in the UCHC. They will split time between a rink in Reading and one in nearby Wyomissing.

The question becomes what happens if enough MAC schools join for their own auto-bid? Do they pull out of the UCHC? My prediction if that happens is we'll see the non-MAC members of the UCHC merge with the CHC who will be losing Canton and Morrisville in 2019 when they join the NEWHL. The MAC would have Manhattanville, Stevenson, King's, LVC, Wilkes, Alvernia and whoever else from the MAC joins. There could be a CHC/UCHC with Elmira, Endicott, Utica, William Smith, Neumann, Chatham, JWU, Nichols Salem State, and Nazareth. Or there could be even more realignment.

Non-hockey MAC schools (as of now) include
- Messiah
- Hood
- Albright
- Lycoming
- Widener
- Delaware Valley
- DeSales
- Eastern
- Fairleigh Dickinson U - Florham
- Misericordia

Salem State, Suffolk and Johnson & Wales will be joining the NEHC on the women’s side in 2018-19. Suffolk and JWU also join the NEHC on the men’s side as well.

Re: 2017-18 DIII News, Game Notes, Etc

Scores so far this championship weekend:

Elmira 3 - Utica 1 - End of 1st - UCHC Semifinal #1
Norwich 2 - UMB 0 - End of 1st - NEHC Final
Plattsburgh 3 - Oswego 0 - End of 1st - NEWHL Final
Hamline 2 - GAC 1 - End of 1st - MIAC Final
UWRF 0 - UWEC 0 - End of 1st - WIAC Final

In earlier action, Middlebury erased a 1-0 deficit after the 1st with 2 PPGs (including a 5 on 3) to beat Bowdoin in the 1st NESCAC semifinal. Maddie Winslow with a goal and an assist. The Panthers play the winner of Amherst vs Conn College (4pm start). In the first CHC semi Morrisville drubbed Nichols 6-(2 ENGs for Morrisville). They await the winner of Canton vs Endicott.

Re: 2017-18 DIII News, Game Notes, Etc

I watched the GAC-Hamline game, and GAC was really lacking in get-up-and-go. Hamline looked better, passed better, and played better D. I've only been watching the Amherst-Conn College game since the middle of the 2nd, but a pretty even match up from what I've seen.

Re: 2017-18 DIII News, Game Notes, Etc

First three tickets to the dance punched:

MIAC: Hamline, beat GAC 4-1.
NEHC: Norwich, beat UMB 7-0.
NEWHL: Plattsburgh, beat Oswego 6-0.

One more autobid on the line tonight as Lake Forest will take on Adrian in the NCHA final at 7PM Eastern.

In non-autobid conference championship action, UW-Eau Claire beat UWRF 3-1 in double OT. The first OT was a five minute period played after the third ended. 2nd OT was a 20 minute period. This is the first time River Falls has not won the WIAC. This loss could put River Falls out of the NCAAs for the first time in years since Elmira is the likely Pool B recipient. UWRF will be competing with GAC and some of the Eastern runner ups for two Pool C bids.

The other conference championships are set for tomorrow, with the semis today. Endicott currently leads Canton 3-0 after 2. Amherst leads Conn College 3-1 in the 3rd period.

Endicott/Canton @ Morrisville - tomorrow at 1PM ET
Conn College @ Middlebury - tomorrow at 2PM ET
UCHC (No Autobid): Sevenson/William Smith @ Elmira - tomorrow at 3PM ET.

Re: 2017-18 DIII News, Game Notes, Etc

Amherst take it 3-1. CC really seemed to control the 3rd period. Amherst was outplayed two weeks in a row and still manages to advance to the final, I think in large part thanks to sold goaltending.

The blowouts/shutouts in some of the championship and semi-final games are no surprise and are proof of how bad some conferences are.

Can someone remind me why St. Thomas wasn't allowed to advance to the playoffs? A rules violation off some sort but I don't recall the situatuon. No matter what, it's a shame that a top team like that is not playing at this time of the season.

Re: 2017-18 DIII News, Game Notes, Etc

St Thomas turned themselves in for drinking in the locker room after last year's playoff run. Classy move by the team, actually. And they were good this year, even considering their two top players picked up and transferred to Hamline after they learned of their fate this year...

As to the at-large bids, I know GAC is ranked slightly higher, but they got whacked pretty good by Hamline. (Not sure how they didn't know that Hamline likes to leak their forwards out, but it caught them a couple times). Combined with how close UWEC and UWRF were today, I think there's an argument for taking UWRF and leaving GAC home. Can't see how they take both. And having seen all 4 teams up close multiple times, I think River Falls is better than Gustavus. But GAC did beat UWRF twice so I can't see that not counting in the equation.

Re: 2017-18 DIII News, Game Notes, Etc

I'm interested to seehow the at large bids shake out. With both GAC and UWRF losing, it could easily mean one of them is left home, and I'd have to think it would be UWRF, since GAC has two wins over them. If Middlebury wins, there's a small chance they could both get in ahead of Amherst (who should hop ahead of CC in the rankings after this win), but if Amherst wins, Middlebury will be in over UWRF, I think.

Norwich, Platty, Adrian, Morrisville/Endicott, Hamline, Midd/Amherst, and Elmira are all in. This leaves GAC, UWRF, and loser of Midd/Amherst to duke it out. I don't think CC or UWEC have a shot.
