2016 UMD Season Thread

Re: 2016 UMD Season Thread

After the Gophers scored six goals on seven shots at her last season, I learned that Sidney isn't the only offensive catalyst in the family.

I just figured out earlier this week that Sidney's sister plays for St. Cloud. I immediately told my eldest son whose is 20 to get off his butt and contact this girl and if he didn't I'd have to play matchmaker. The only issue is he really dislikes Sidney, but I'm sure he's a fine fella. My other son is 18, he's my number 2 candidate, though he's interested in Norby, I really couldn't complain about that choice.

Re: 2016 UMD Season Thread

SCSU 0 - UMD 1 after one. SOG SCSU 5 - UMD 14.

Brodt at 16:05 on a beautiful wrist shot from the high slot 3 hole after being fed by Mrazova.

Mrazova's presence makes a huge difference on this team. She's flying today, skating miles and producing some great passes.

Two PP opportunities: the first was anemic, they couldn't create time and space in the Huskie end.

Second PP was a lot better, they created some opportunities but did not capitalize. Generally, it's been needing some work for a whole.

Even though the 'Dog shot count is down from yesterday's first period their play seems way more intense...Mrazova, Brodt and at times Brykaliuk seem super motivated. Good to see and it seems to be affecting several other team mates.

Elmes is back in the lineup today.

SCSU 0 - UMD 3 after two. SOG SCSU 8 - UMD 24.

Brykaliuk at 17:18 on another beauty as she was cruising through the crease got the tip of her blade straight down at her feet on a feed from the corner and redirected it in.

It's a good thing there aren't any speed traps in the 'Dog Pound today because Mrazova and Brodt are violating legal limits.

Healey is back in the lineup as well.

A brilliant pad save by Rooney on a semi breakaway.

McGovern in front at 7:11 from Brykaliuk that culminated a rush.

Very spirited effort so far by the entire team with no one taking shifts off. They keep pouring it on and it appears as though it might be paying other dividends in that the Huskies are starting to do some standing around in their end. So far it has been a very respectable effort by SCSU.

SCSU 1 - UMD 4 Final. SOG SCSU 13 - UMD 37.

Crossman at 16:51 of the third on a good solo effort (unassisted) w/4 huskies around her from the face off circle...that Alder should have had.

Then for the Huskies Stewart from Friesen at 12:16 in front with a wrist shot on an extremely nice quick heads up play taking advantage of a UMD defensive miscue.

Attendance 1086.

Top marks for effort by the entire team. Three full periods of pedal down. This is more like it.

The Possum Play appears to be working to near perfection...completely under the radar.

Very nice coverage of the Seniors' Night Celebrations.

The flow of the celebratory process had to stop for about two minutes so the announcer could finish reading out Stalder's accomplishments. Haha.

Then a great video tribute to each of the Seniors...Sydney Morin, Ashleigh Brykaliuk, Katherine McGovern, Demi Crossman, Lara Stalder, and Maria Lindh.

There goes the first line but there's still more hockey left in this season.

Re: 2016 UMD Season Thread

SCSU 0 - UMD 5 Final. SOG SCSU 21 - UMD 44.

Stalder and Brykaliuk each with a 3 point game, Morin, Doust, Crossman and Lownhielm with 2 each and Brossart with a single.

Big downer...thought this was going to be streamed...think I make the same mistake every year.

Do you mean you thought it was going to be free? Was it at least on the normal NCHC streams or was it unavailable completely. (I thought I remembered that the WCHA quarters were streamed free courtesy of WCHA :p )

I thought it was going to be streamed and free. But the downer was that it wasn't streamed at all.

Yeah, the quarter finals are streamed and free but the first round isn't streamed at all. As mentioned I think I make this mistake every year.

(I really want to see St. Lawrence play...vs anybody).

Blackbeard, you are in luck. St. Lawrence has a free video feed. You can watch them play the wrong colored Bulldogs all weekend.

Yes, I checked out their site after posting my comment and saw that...but thank you very much for mentioning it.

Funny that you mentioned the "wrong coloured Bulldogs"...that's "UK" and the ladies of Yale. Head Coach Joachim Flygh (nicknamed UK for semi obvious reasons) used to be assistant coach at UMD (the correct coloured Bulldogs) and for at least a season if not more Jessica Koizumi (a UMD 'Dog Alum) was assistant coach under UK two or three years back.

Years ago, someone who knew, told me that the sport of women's hockey is a very small world and I quickly learned how accurate that statement was. Paths are always crossing, time and space are nearly always colliding. Which just seems to me to make it all the more interesting.

Thanks again. I'll be checking it out.

Re: 2016 UMD Season Thread

SCSU 2 - UMD 6 Final. SOG SCSU 23 - UMD 36.

The stealth PP is unfolding nicely but the other PP is tanking. They're hardly getting any shots on goal on the power play.

1, 1, 4, and 4 on 4 opportunities!

Not a good time of the season to be struggling with that...not that it has ever been clicking well this season but it now looks to be locked in reverse.

On the positive side Stalder had another 3 point game with Brykaliuk and Daoust getting 2 points each.

(And somewhat nonplussed with St. Lawrence in their defeat of Yale today...I was expecting to be impressed as in fireworks...didn't happen. Were they playing down to their competition? I've been thinking that St. Lawrence vs UMD would be a great game now I'm not so sure. Then again, UMD has had a few unimpressive games this season so maybe the sample was too small).

Some lofty honours and recognition for Stalder and Morin...and Maura Crowell...

I don't know where she has been in the past because I had not really noticed previously but having seen her play 6 times this year Stalder is one of the most "beautiful" hockey players I have seen. Smooth & powerful with a deadly shot. No disrespect to ARD, she would have my vote.

As they usually do, she has grown and matured during the last four years into the player you described. But even more importantly for UMD, in my view, is the synergistic playing relationship which exists between her, Brykaliuk and McGovern which has blossomed these past two seasons. As I've said before, regardless of one's fan affiliation, when these three are clicking they are so beautiful to watch, their ice sense, skating, crisp decisive passing, and shooting ability can all blend so seamlessly and happen so quickly that opponents struggle to react let alone defend.

I mentioned early this season that the key for them (UMD and this line) would be to be consistent and although they haven't been as consistent as I would have preferred to see they have excelled in the standings and the rankings rising from the managerial/administrative ashes of two years ago. I hope that they and the rest of the team are playing at their highest level tomorrow to display their abilities to a wide audience regardless of the outcome.

Wish that could have been possible two weeks ago vs UW but it appears that my wishes were preempted by a brilliant coaching strategy that is presently unfolding to fruition.

Re: 2016 UMD Season Thread

I don't know where she has been in the past ...
I thought she was an impact player from the first time I saw her play. She missed part of the freshman season to help the Swiss win bronze, and if I'm remembering correctly, she had to deal with injuries at times during both her sophomore and junior seasons, but her skills have always stood out. Even though it seems that half the posters on this board can't spell "Lara Stalder".

When we were in Duluth for the disastrous series my wife kept correcting me on her name. I did not explain to her that it was all the fault of "The Walrus" Craig Stadler.
