2016-2017 WCHA Season Thread

Re: 2016-2017 WCHA Season Thread

Shocking stat of the day: After their 5-0 start, Minnesota State haven't won more than one game in a row since then.

It's even more shocking to see it in person. One period, we're the greatest team in the country. The next, it's like our those aliens from Space Jam took our guys talent away.

What's up with the highlights that Bowling Green puts out to the WCHA website? No highlights of the BSU goals? Every other school that I have seen post highlights have shown all goals scored in the game......

Re: 2016-2017 WCHA Season Thread

Since 12/02/16:

UAH: 3-5-0-0 (3-3-0-0)
UAA: 4-3-1-0 (4-3-1-0) tie=shootout loss
UA_: 2-5-1-1 (2-3-1-1)
BSU: 4-4-2-1 (4-3-1-1)
BG: 4-5-0-0 (3-5-0-0)
FSU: 2-4-2-1 (2-3-2-1)
LSSU: 2-5-1-0 (2-3-1-0)
MTU: 5-3-0-0 (3-1-0-0)
MSU: 5-2-1-0 (4-1-1-0)
NMU: 2-6-0-0 (2-4-0-0) they play LSSU in back to back weekends

Fairly certain I did that correctly, puts UAA in our best light but still interesting.

Having just played Notre Dame, they do the same thing. The ND highlights package shows everything right down to shots on net and saves by the Irish, but doesn't even acknowledge the other team was even in the building. The only way you know is seeing ND fall farther and farther behind on the on-screen scoreboard with each successive highlight. Every time they showed an Irish highlight, the MTU score was higher than the last one, but you will never know how it happened thanks to their editors. :-)

They really need to either do two videos if they want to do that...one that is a highlight reel for the home team and one that is more of a game recap.

Bowling Green did include the BSU goals in Saturday's highlight package. So, they did make amends, even though I was able to see those goals since that game was on TV here in Minnesota.....

Re: 2016-2017 WCHA Season Thread

So the WCHA Men's Facebook Page had a post on it last night stating that Bemidji has locked up a playoff spot...
A week later, I'm still not seeing how this is possible. There are 9 teams that I calculate can still pass BSU in the standings (as unlikely as it may be for BSU to not score another point in the standings this season).
BSU has 49 pts currently.
Best possible finishes of the current bottom three teams:
NMU 10+36=46 pts
UAA 16+36=52 pts*
LSSU 19+36=55 pts*
* Not taking head to head games into consideration so maybe this is what they looked at? Best case scenario is that UAA/LSSU split their two games and wind up with 49 and 52 respectively. BSU has the tie breaker over everyone currently so that would make them 8th?

So unless they assumed everyone had already played 20 games, or that a win was only worth two points, I don't see how anyone has mathematically locked up a playoff spot. Am I missing something here?

If it is clinched, I assume its because even though 8 teams can catch them, not all 8 teams can accomplish that at the same time...because of head to head matches...like UAA plays both UAF and LSSU yet...

I did the math last week, and it wasn't possible then. http://blog.wchaplayoffs.com/2017/01/03/2016-17-wcha-week-13-below-ratings/, second paragraph.

I don't think that Bemidji has clinched it, but I want to spend a little bit with the problem to be sure.

Re: 2016-2017 WCHA Season Thread

Well UAA is playing much better the last two or three weeks. Couldn't they have done this ooc instead of saving it up for now! I figure they make it in. LSSU needs to up their game if they want to make it and what's up with Ferris? NMU, seems like Hannoun has really helped your team.
I'd like to see our league do what they can to schedule ooc games later in the year going forward.

UAA's last 8 games have all been in Alaska, 6 at home, 2 in Fairbanks. It looks impressive, and it's an improvement for sure, but it's not a clear indication of anything except "not bad at home."

True, but we've only played 2 of those 6 against teams below us. UA_ is at 7th, BSU at 1, FSU at 6th. LOL truly grasping at straws now. MTU is gonna be tough, but we got NMU after them. When MTU was here goals for the weekend were 3-4 in favor of them, while again it was at home we were also in our slump at home. NMU took the lead in goals also at 6-7, but two of there goals were late in the third Saturday night which we can improve upon. Then we got MSU, who is having a down year so who knows what's gonna happen. Finally we got LSSU and UA_. My predictions:

MTU: Friday night success yet again, plus they've lost 7 of their 9 on the first games of the week, 6 of those being a friday night. Split
NMU: Their last two wins have come on a Saturday...Split
MSU: Travel is gonna be hectic for them...Slight edge for them due to a shootout involved
LSSU: 4 of their 6 WCHA wins came early...Split (bonus fact: we've split every weekend since playing them in the nWCHA)
UA_: We've crapped the bed so many times at home, we are due some wins...Hello a shootout win (also due) and hello Governor's Cup (also due)

God ****it I believe in the law of averages!

Would essentially splitting every weekend give us enough points for the playoffs? I have no ****ing idea. Twisted part is we play the three teams who are the most crucial out of the five series left; UA_, LSSU and NMU. Would not be surprised if the 8th and 9th teams go through some tie-breakers.

gfmorris, did your head explode?
