2015 World Junior Championships

Canada names starting goaltender for game vs. USA

http://sbnation.com/e/7233270

I like Canada's handling of their goalies in this tourney: Give their two top dogs two games each, then ride the hot hand in the medal round (assuming that is, indeed, what they're doing). Don't get me wrong, I think Demko is playing very well. But given two equally talented goalies, I think the Canadian kid plays with a little extra.

Yea a goalie that doesn't have a similarly talented backup pushing him for playing just isn't trying that hard for a gold medal for his country.

Yikes, not saying that at all. Just saying that I think the Canadian strategy is the optimal one, all things being equal.

Tomorrow night Demko knows he's the man, Comrie is fighting to be the man.

Re: 2015 World Junior Championships

Great shootout, sweet switch to the backhand by the game winner.

Denmark is now tied with Switzerland. If Sweden gets an outright win, Denmark will be in the medal rounds. Also if Russia can win, they get in, and the Czechs go to the relegation playoff.

If Czechs get a shootout win and Sweden gets the outright win, the three-way is points between tied teams. Denmark has 3, Swiss 4, Czechs 2, Czechs go to relegation.

Re: 2015 World Junior Championships

Today's games:
1pm EST Switzerland vs. Sweden
Swiss need at least a point to clinch qualification

4pm EST United States vs. Canada
Winner takes 1st place in Group A

5pm EST Russia vs. Czech Republic
Czechs need a regulation win or help to qualify

8pm EST Germany vs. Finland
Winner avoids relegation round

Standings

Group A

Canada 3-0-0-0 9 (clinched 1st/2nd place)
USA 2-1-0-0 8 (clinched 1st/2nd place)
Slovakia 2-0-0-2 5 (clinched 3rd place)
Finland 0-0-1-1 1
Germany 0-0-0-3 0

Group B

Sweden 3-0-0-0 9 (clinched group winner)
Russia 1-1-0-1 5 (clinched qualification)
Denmark 0-1-2-1 4
Swiss 1-0-1-1 4
Czechs 0-1-0-2 2

Note - I've put the Danes 3rd and Swiss 4th because the 1st tiebreaker is H2H, although obviously Switzerland has a game in hand.

Re: 2015 World Junior Championships

One man's opinion - the USA needs to drop the "Umbrella" power play. It isn't working, and the team doesn't look comfortable with it. I've never bee a fan of it - only one reasonable shooting angle from beyond the dots, and it usually gets blocked. And only two instead of three guys low enough to have a reasonable shot at a rebound.

This team has a lot of talent at D, get two point men with three down low (including Eichel), and crash the net following shots from the point.

I agree with this completely.

Especially with the PP operating at 7.69%, sure the passes are pretty with the umbrella but passes rarely make it to the back of the net. I don't like the lack of pressure the umbrella PP has put on opponents down low, with talent like Schmaltz, Eichel, and Milano they have to be below the top of the circles with the puck looking for a loose puck or a rebound.

Re: 2015 World Junior Championships

Sweden up 5-1 after picking up a pair on a major. Barring some sort of a miracle in the third, Sweden will get 12 points, and Denmark will clinch a spot in the quarters. Czechs MUST win in regulation to stay alive; they come in 3rd in the 3-way.

Re: 2015 World Junior Championships

Sweden/Switzerland is a lock. Sweden will face either Finland or Germany in the quarters, and Denmark goes to the quarters, probably to face either the US or Canada.

Guaranteed to play one of those two. US World Junior A Challenge team beat this Denmark team... I'd rather face them than Russia, and Switzerland would probably be the most ideal (US win over Canada, Russia win over Czech).
