2015 World Championship Thread

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

If I'm reading the point system correctly, the only way we don't directly qualify for the Olympics is if we finish somewhere between 13-16, and Latvia, Norway, and Belarus medal, I believe the final two having to earn gold while we finish last. So essentially, don't get relegated and we're in. And even if we do get relegated there's still a decent chance we're in.

They are looking pretty solid against last years Silver medalist Finland right now. USA up 2-1 off a loose puck pushed home by Matt Hendricks.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

End of 2, 3-1 USA. Hellebuyck has been outstanding in net. USA goals by Moses (1st), Hendricks and Sexton (2nd).

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

Finland pulls Pekka Rinne for 6 attackers with 4 min. left in 3rd.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

USA wins it 5-1. Very strong performance by a very young USA team which seemed to get better as the game progressed. Finland outplayed USA in the 1st, beginning of 2nd and had at least 8-10 good scoring chances in the game. But Hellebuyck was stellar in net and the USA played shutdown D against a very good Finland team. Seth Jones/Mike Reilly D pairing has a huge offensive upside. My stars of the game: 1) Hellebuyck, 2) Hendricks, 3) Moses.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

Either Finland brought nobody, or I was vastly incorrect in my assessment.

They had Jokinen and Barkov from Florida, Ruutu from New Jersey, Kontiola from Toronto, and obviously Rinne from Nashville who was MVP last year. Finland was all over the U.S. it the first period, but it seemed like once the U.S. got the first goal late in the first period they got a huge burst of confidence and shut Finland down defensively.

Eichel is terrible at faceoffs, isn't he? 1-7 today. Interesting that Mikey is in the top 6 over Gardiner.

Hopefully I can watch the next one. I wish NBC was showing more games, but it looks like US only until the medal round again like past years.

Overall "Mikey" was impressive, especially when he had the puck on his stick and creating offense. Definitely one of the best pure skating defensive players on the ice, maybe THE best. But I thought he struggled a bit at times in his own end. His biggest challenge I think is his positioning in the defensive zone, and also to get stronger/more aggressive when defending, especially along the wall. But for his first big test against NHL level opposition he acquitted himself very well.

And as far as Eichel goes, besides his struggles on faceoffs, I didn't think his overall game was reflective of an overall 2nd draft pick. He did make a couple of great moves and nearly scored on one of them, but he can obviously play a lot better than he showed today.

Both Eichel and Vesey were non-factors in the game. The Vesey/Eichel/Lewis line struggled offensively and had very few SOG. Not sure pairing Vesey and Eichel on a line is the best choice. Hendricks/Larkin/Sexton line was the best line today and were all over the ice in the 2nd and 3rd. Dylan Larkin has some wheels. IMO if this team is in sync and Hellebuyck in on his game like today, they're capable of some stunning upsets in the tournament.

In your defense, it's hard to judge a young team like this when it's only had 4 practices and an exhibition game against a less talented team. Finland has a good team and USA was clearly dominated in the first, but the Fins didn't bury their chances. USA found some chemistry/momentum on a couple lines midway thru the 2nd, the D did their job in shooting lanes and cleared pucks and Hellebuyck was outstanding. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised at the USA's performance.

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

In all seriousness, Eichel struggled through the first half of the year on face-offs. Then he improved pretty significantly. Then he struggled in the third period against PC.:mad::mad:

And also he certainly had games where he didn't impress. I had two separate guys go to two different games to see Eichel in person, and came away wondering waht all the hype was about. He usually followed those games up with a dominant performance.

Finally, let's not forget that Eichel is an 18-year old playing against many older guys. I know there are other young guys on the team, but any others as young as him?

And PC had a ton of "older" kids too...maybe it is a strength thing with Jack but he was bad in the WJC game vs Canada too

Re: 2015 World Championship Thread

How many goalies is the US team carrying? Would like to see Lyon get some action, but if Hellebuyck continues his play, that is fine as well.
