Re: 2015 Women's Frozen Four Championship: Who Wins?

You bring all these people from Boston to town, well of course it's going to start snowing :D

By the way, Twin Cities folks, did you know our record snowfall is 1983-84 with 96 inches, and Boston got 108 this year? Hardly feels right.

Yeah well, here it snowed yesterday as well and this morning it was -15 with a cold north artic wind. Our record snowfall is 444 cm (2008), that converts to 175 inches. (This is 30 miles north of the NY North Country).

Re: 2015 Women's Frozen Four Championship: Who Wins?

I think the scalpers were holding more tickets than they could sell, having overestimated the demand on the street.

It seems to me that both the scalpers outside Ridder who got hosed (good) and the NCAA "production" team that hosed those of us at home (very bad) are faced with the same conundrum: what to make of the fan base? Though eyewitness accounts vary somewhat, it is clear that fans of women's hockey were progressively leaving a scoreless, then one-goal Frozen Four battle between the #2 and #3 seeds, with teams seldom seen in the midwest. Curious, no?

I have no doubt that many UW fans were going to find a TV; UW men's basketball tourney game tipped off at about the end of the first period of BC-Harvard hockey.

I don't think its curious at all. By the time you got to the 3rd period of game 2, most fans would have been at the rink for at least 4 hours. It doesnt matter the sporting event, most casual fans just dont have that kind of attention span. The reality is that even among the best fan bases, 1500-2000 people is a solid crowd, and at the end of BC-Harvard, there were at least 1500 people still there. That, to me, means you did have a good number of less than hardcore fans who stuck around for a game where they had no real rooting interest.

OK, thanks. I'll accept, reluctantly, the reality checks and observations. I just hope those fans left at the end of the game saw that no one had been eating cake!!!

Re: 2015 Women's Frozen Four Championship: Who Wins?

Major choke/give away by Pucci in front of her own net with about 8 1/2 min left in the first period. Lucky it didn't cost her team.

Maschmeyer is sharp. One great save by Leveille.

HU let Wolfe walk right in and paid for it.

Great first period.

Re: 2015 Women's Frozen Four Championship: Who Wins?

Second period in the books. Still 1-0. Minnesota is the better team, but Maschmeyer is fabulous, and as long as it is 1-0, any ones game.

Re: 2015 Women's Frozen Four Championship: Who Wins?

UM pretty much neutered HU's offence in the second period.

Not nearly the flow of the first period.

Harvard played a much better period that time, took it to the Gophers much more than the first... but didn't, when all's said and done, generate a ton of high quality chances. Hard to see them taking this.

Just a few things I see so far. Although Minnesota Scored in the first I thought the play was fairly even. Second period was all Minnesota. I thought it looked like fatigue was setting in with Harvard, There was a lot of flat feet in there own end in that period. Harvard does not have a forward that is a real sniper that scares you on the rush. Harvard also gives the puck up a lot after they have possession. It's is still only 1-0 and anything can happen but Harvard must refuel the tank during intermission if they are to have any chance.

Re: 2015 Women's Frozen Four Championship: Who Wins?

Congrats to the Gophers. A heck of a good game by both teams, especially the goaltenders.
Final 4-1 Gophers.

Re: 2015 Women's Frozen Four Championship: Who Wins?

Yes Congrats. It was a nice showing by the Gophers in all phases of the game. Harvard played as hard as they could, but not in the same class.

Re: 2015 Women's Frozen Four Championship: Who Wins?

As you may guess from the user name, I am a Harvard fan. Yes, disappointed by the result but very impressed with Minnesota's speed and with the Minnesota goalie. I good clean game and nice to watch despite the loss by Harvard.

Re: 2015 Women's Frozen Four Championship: Who Wins?

Congrats to the Gophers on wining the championship. They were the better team on the ice today, and deserved the win based on game of play.

Congrats as well to the Crimson for representing the ECAC well in the NCAA tournament. Seen the likes of Armstrong, Crowe, Edney, Fry, Gedman, Pucci and Reber play for the last four to five years. Good luck in your future endeavors, and hold your head up high on this bitter sweet day.

Agree. Good game to watch.

Re: 2015 Women's Frozen Four Championship: Who Wins?

Gotta say, didn't like the optics of the Championship Game ending with a game of keep away.

HU defensive give away along the far boards resulted in the backbreaking 3rd goal for UM.

Anemic offence by HU tremendously assisted by UM's relentless forechecking and backchecking.

Thought the game started out great from a competitive point of view with the first period being excellent with lots of flow despite the penalties.

It went downhill from there but could have been interesting at the end if HU could have tied it up late.

I'm glad that HU at least scored one...what a downer to make it to the National Championship Game and to be held scoreless.

At least from a Gopher point of view, I thought it was dynamic and classy. Or maybe you're saying Harvard shouldn't have been sitting back. If you're arguing the latter, I guess I can partially buy it. But honestly the Gophers had no need to try for a 5th goal. They just took control of the clock and ended it. What's not to like?

Agreed. Nice for Harvard to have one moment to celebrate.

Again, just the optics. Makes it look like the other team shouldn't be there. And I know it probably wouldn't have happened, or it would have been less likely to happen if Fry wasn't in the penalty box to end the game (reminded me of J-Lam - what a place to be when the final buzzer goes in a Championship Game) but I think UM should have taken a few more shots and HU shouldn't have just sat back and watched.

I know it sort of opens that discussion (which I don't want to do) that always goes nowhere about respect/lack of respect for your opponent in these types of situations.

Maybe if it hadn't gone on for so long I wouldn't have had the same impression. It seemed very awkward for both teams.

I dunno. If you have the lead in the last five minutes of a championship game, I would do the same thing. You are there to win the championship, not to earn style points for the win.
