2015 WCHA Offseason

Re: 2015 WCHA Offseason

that, and they'd need Notre Dame to take it to 8. Seven would be a scheduling nightmare, and they can't just wait around for another B1G or PAC-12 school to maybe sign on for hockey.

actually with their limited conference schedule, 7 wouldn't be horrible. Not to mention Notre Dame isn't getting in as an affiliate member...its all or nothing for them...at least that's my assumption.

that's why Schlossman actually did get something right: NCHC is option #1 for ASU, and they will attempt to poach a WCHA team (hello, Mankato).

I would disagree. Odd numbers are only a problem in a larger conference when you play an unbalanced schedule. With seven teams you can still play a basic conference schedule of playing every team home and away every season and still have some non-conference game slots available. Six opposing teams times four games each = 24 game conference schedule and a half dozen or so NC.

For a league with visions of like minded grandeur, Mankato or Bowling Green don't really bring the NCHC anything they don't already have, e.g. no new TV or media markets. If I'm the NCHC I'd be slobbering all over trying to get ASU for that reason, but if I'm the Sun Devils there's no way I'd be able to fill up that NHL arena playing a bunch of no-name NCHC (or WCHA) schools. That might even be a reason to stay independent for a few years until the right situation does open up. I don't think they'll have much of an issue with scheduling if they were to stay independent...there's not a team or fan base in college hockey that wouldn't enjoy spending a January weekend in Phoenix.

Wasn't there a rumor about Mankato and Bemidji joining the NCHC but Western Michigan and Miami would move to the WCHA around in a few years? Any truth to it or is it complete B.S.?

If Arizona State does join the NCHC, hopefully they would try and get Notre Dame to join instead of a WCHA team.

It's all BS... right up until it happens. Beyond the Bi6 forming, there really wasn't a need, other than greed, for any of this to happen. Greed has no logic other than self-satisfaction so trying to predict what it will do next is pretty much impossible. It's like trying to have a logical discussion with an insane person... you just can't do it regardless of how hard you try.

I hope BSU never joins the Nacho league. The WCHA has great parity and I enjoy how we are set up now. The last month with everyone still vying for home ice and a playoff position is great. It's competitive, it's got new rivalries, it's preferable to being in a league where everyone treats you as the "also added" no matter how competitive you are. The WCHA is getting stronger and our presence in the playoffs was noted.

It was postulated by a few bloggers that the travel budget has been a tough adjustment for Western and Miami, but I don't see Miami going back to those bus trips to the UP again, especially with Tech in there now. Rumor has it Rico Blasi's head would probably explode.

Me too. I like the way the league is setup now, though I'm sure the WCHA would like to get to 12 teams at some point. I'm sure Bowling Green would like to see two Atlantic Hockey schools join the league to make their travel schedule not quite as harsh.
