2015 USCHO Cycling Thread

Re: 2015 USCHO Cycling Thread

Pretty poor Milan San Remo with a sprint finish. 1st classics win to Degenkolb Luckily Thomas did not hold on to win.

I thought the finish was pretty good. lots of fireworks on the Cipressa and Poggio, and a helluva an effort to bring it all back together for the finish. And what a sprint by Degenkolb.

Topsport Vlaandaren goes 1-2 today in the Dwars door Vlaanderen race. Kwiatkovkski had nothing left at the end after doing a ton of work in the breakaway, after initiating the move with about 50+k left in the race.

Re: 2015 USCHO Cycling Thread

Geraint Thomas pulls out the win at the E3 Harelbeke, attacking Stybar and Sagan with about 4k to go. I don't like Sky and their riders, except for Thomas, so bravo.

And check out this crash by Van Avermaet. Goes into the corner too fast, rear wheel slides out, and then catches the soft dirt and grass on the side of the road.

Cancellera also crashes out, breaks a couple vertebrae in his lower back. Done for the classics.

Speaking of crashes how about G. Thomas'? And he is starting to look like the new Hincapie, strongest guy on the pave a monster in the TTT and leading the peloton on the mountains...

With Cance out, Thomas looks like the favorite, I can only hope that Vanmarke strengthens in the next week and that EQS square away their tactics so that Terpstra and Styby can shine. I still feel that Styby is the only one who can equal Thomas' strength right now. Fortunately today EQS isolated Thomas early and he had to do it all on his own.

Re: 2015 USCHO Cycling Thread

Gent-Wevelgem was a nice race to watch. And once again, Etixx with numbers in the break, and don't get it done.

Re: 2015 USCHO Cycling Thread

Two 'Johnny Hoogerland's' in Flanders today. First, a Shimano neutral support vehicle clips Jesse Sergeant while trying to pass the leading group of six, sending him to hospital with a broken collarbone, and then later, another Shimano support vehicle rear ends the FDJ team car while it was slowing and pulling over for a rider mechanical in a narrow village street, sending the team car into the rider and him up and over the fender. He didn't look to be injured so badly though.

Powerful win for Dega and more good team riding for Etixx but overall kind of a poor edition of the l'enfer du nord.
I'm starting the rumor now, Degenkolb to Etixx next year.

Yeah, once again they have numbers in a break and come up with nothing to show for it.

And I agree, this year's P-R was kinda blah. Today's Brabantse Pijl was more exciting.

Re: 2015 USCHO Cycling Thread

Yeah, good attacking riding from Hermann. I bet its the most exciting of the Ardennes races, just like E3 and Ghent were better than RvV and PR.

And it looked like Gilbert was gonna come up to him, as was the plan, and then figured that he couldn't make it without dragging Matthews and the rest up with him, probably losing the race as a result, so he and his other BMC teammate back there with him switched to blocking tactics instead, letting Hermans stay away.

Gent-Wevelgem has been the best race of the classics season so far. Even without the weather, although good weather probably would have changed how the race went down, but Roelendt's long breakaway, and the pursuit behind were intense. Great efforts all around.

Yesterday Wilco Keldeman uploaded his Amstel gold power data for the public to see.During the 159 mile race he did 5718 Kj of work, his AVERAGE power was 291 watts over the entire course and his max power was 1121 watts. Just fyi,..... but wow, awesome is an easily used word these days, but that was awesome.

Re: 2015 USCHO Cycling Thread

Valverde wins on the Mur (again). Another 2nd for Etixx from Alaphillipe. Albasini 3rd. The new climb was fun, but 300 meters from the line there were still 25 guys in the peloton.

Re: 2015 USCHO Cycling Thread

Classics seasons ends with another Valverde win and another Etixx second, again from Alaphillipe. There was a fair amount of attacking but ultimately there were 25 guys left after St. Nicholas.

Re: 2015 USCHO Cycling Thread

And Valverde did all the work, from having to reel back Moreno after everyone else in the group was just looking around waiting for him to do it, to just riding away from them all once Moreno was caught, and they made the turn for the line.

I think Rodriguez was really wishing he had attacked earlier.

He said something after that he really thought, and was hoping, that Moreno would stay away. And he played the role of good teammate. Maybe he should have gone as soon as Moreno was caught, and not have let Valverde just ramp it up all the way to the line. But he also made a huge effort to get on Valverde's wheel, and maybe just didn't have it to go right away. and he's sure not gonna beat Valverde in a sprint finish, as yesterday turned out to be. He looked a little down on the podium.

I have to say I'm pretty surprised that Valverde has been so strong. Maybe it's just that his team is better though and he doesn't have to work as hard early on.
I'm also surprised that Sky has not done better, given just how much money they pour into things.
