2015 UMD Season Thread

Re: 2015 UMD Season Thread

I can't agree with that. UMD's goal has to be to reach the NCAA Tournament. That means either winning the WCHA tourney, or getting in at-large. No third-place or lower team has ever won the WCHA tourney. I think we saw with Bemidji State last year why it is so hard. Beat Minnesota? Fine, come back the next day and beat Wisconsin. Losing to BC isn't the end of the world, just because most other teams will lose to the Eagles as well. IMO, UMD still has a higher probability of getting in via the PWR than it does through an AQ.

I think UMD can't realistically expect to reach the tournament. Home ice in the WCHA and a good run seems more realistic to me. Seasoning the goalie makes a lot of sense.

Re: 2015 UMD Season Thread

I don't think it is seasoning the goalie. It may be playing the best goalie.

After watching Rooney for 5 periods this weekend, no question she is the best of the two. She may even make an argument for being the best in the conference. This kid will steal some wins for UMD.

Re: 2015 UMD Season Thread

4-2 win last night over Mankato is the first I've seen of this tean.UMD pretty much dominated play - shots were like 40-12. But had trouble finding the net. Rooney in goal for the dogs & looked okay. The only two shots faced in the 3rd got by her. Hoping that was just the result of not seeing much action. The one new player that stood out for me was Morse (Lakeville South). Hopefully Dogs take some of the slack out in this afternoon's rematch as last night's game was quite sloppy all the way round.

Re: 2015 UMD Season Thread

Update on Mrazova - she will not be available until 2nd semester. Had a knee injury in the summer . . . does make the short bench seem a bit emptier. It will be good to get her back, healthy. UMD needs every goal scorer they can get!!

I doubt very much that it will be a truly competitive weekend in Minneapolis. Hopefully in this case, the Dogs will play up to their competition.

Re: 2015 UMD Season Thread

As expected, the Dogs dropped 2 to the Gophers. It would appear that Rooney had a "good" weekend in goal - all things considered. Perhaps against an even slightly lesser offensive opponent the Dogs could have pulled the first game out. It is great to see them score a couple of PPG. Hopefully that carries through. And, hopefully some lessons learned about what it will take to compete (and win) against the very best.

Also wondering how Coach Crowell's WCHA learning curve is coming along. One thing for sure, to be competitive in the WCHA you need scoring. Hopefully she'll be able to recruit a few with that scorers touch. It looks like she has a net minder that can hold up well.

Re: 2015 UMD Season Thread

I saw Rooney live vs BC. She was pretty good. Black did well last year too so as you say, the issue for the Bulldogs is likely to be up front.

Rooney looked like a potential All-American in the first game through most of the first two periods, especially the first period. Very good mechanics. But the final 3 periods she played on the weekend, the last period of game one, and the first two of game two, she looked like a totally different goalie. Period 2 of game two was dreadful, stopped 5 of 9 shots. In hindsight, I bet Cowsill wished she had started Black in game two.

The blue line of UMD is talented, but young (inexperience at the college level), the same is somewhat true of the forwards, ... add a nice freshman class next year ....

I have been wondering if finally having a coach in the WCHA with eastern roots (and contacts) will finally bring some eastern players out west. There are a ton of western players who travel east to play (maybe more than a ton, if you figure 150 lbs per player), but we have been more likely to see Finns or Swedes on WCHA teams than New Englanders.

Will that change under Crowell?

Given that most Eastern D1 coaches are pulling disproportionately large quantities of players from Minnesota and Canada, it would appear that the coaching consensus is that the Eastern players aren't nearly as strong. Given that, not sure why a school in the heart of Minnesota and nearly in Canada would be interested in recruiting less talented Eastern players.

I agree with you in general; however, recruiting is done specifically. I was suggesting that she could recruit some of the MORE talented eastern players, not the less-talented ones.

Doubtful - more than enough Eastern schools with successful programs to keep the top Eastern players home - Harvard, BU, BC, Clarkson (OK - so they're all Canadien ... :)), St Lawrence, etc. If they went West is would be for places like U of M and Wisconsin.

Re: 2015 UMD Season Thread

Good game tonight vs UND at The Ralph.

The `Dogs started with lots of sharp stickhandling and crisp passes which eventually gave way to their continually giving it away as the period progressed.

The offense while showing glimpses of coordinated talent just wasn`t hungry enough for a large part of the game...a symptom that`s lingered for the last few years. They had a couple of 2 on 1`s early in the 1st but didn`t seem to possess the closing instinct with one forward who was all alone point blank in front of SAB and instead of shooting she passed it to a covered team mate. (Kind of reminded me of a girl on our Midget AA team years ago who when finding herself all alone in the slot would never shoot...she would voluntarily, without pressure, skate it into the corner and look for someone to pass it to...I guess she failed to grasp the concept).

They were leading 3-2 about half way through the 3rd and had just gone on a PP so things were looking fairly positive. And a win against a ranked team would have boosted confidence. But somehow they were able to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory.

It`s a small sample size because it`s the first game I`ve been able to watch this season but from what I saw Rooney looks like a dramatic improvement in net from what UMD has had for the last three years. Quick, alert and aggressive with fluid motion and decent technicals from what I could see...offensively minded in that most defensive of positions which is very important in my opinion, at least she was in this game...very impressive. She made only one mistake (on the last UND goal) and her defence let her down a couple of times. But she stoned Kohler point blank in the 3rd and made some extremely quick and difficult saves early in the 1st and made them look routine.

The `Dogs can build from her skills on outward unless her performance tonight was an anomaly, which I doubt...we`ll see. A couple of higher end forwards would make a big difference on this team I think. I guess we`ll see how Crowell can recruit.

Black had good stats last year but against BC Rooney got the start in the second game and was clearly at least as good. With three years left of her UMD definitely has something to build on, at least the way U Conn has gained confidence from having Chuli, potentially the way Bemidji has gained confidence from Mowat. You're in a league with a lot of firepower so you need the D to help the goalie more than in other conferences, but if you build out from Rooney good things could happen.

Re: 2015 UMD Season Thread

Another coin toss game at The Ralph with the 'Dogs coming out on top this time with a 1-0 win on a great wrist shot 1 hole fired with authority by Lowenhielm halfway through the third.

More thinking under (no) pressure required though...before the last penalty to UND which nullified their 6 on 4 advantage that began with 1:31 left on the clock an unidentifed UMD player had the puck in her end all alone against the boards with clear ice to the empty net at the other. Instead of trying to end the game by shooting toward the empty net she let a slap shot rip along the boards to relieve the pressure that the Hawks had been applying. She had time. The poor choice was glaring.

Luckily it ended well for them and as previously mentioned would appear to bode well for their prospects. If they played with more sustained intensity than they showed today only in shorter flashes it seems to me that they would move up a number of rungs toward the top 10 rankings.

SOG 32-22 UND.

Rooney, Cava and Stalder stood out for UMD and Menke was not able to improve on her field goal from last night for the Hawks.

Good thing that.

Quite the back and forth battle with nice goals all around in game #1. Must have been a good one to watch in its entirety.

Yes, it was.

Forgot to mention MLam provided the colour commentary in the first game and Menke did hit the post in the second game right at the end of the first period coming close to adding to her abundant tally the night before.

Re: 2015 UMD Season Thread

Dogs post 2nd consecutive win against ranked opponent! Couldn't make it in person today (or see it on TV!), but hope to tomorrow. Observations anyone who did see it????
