Can someone explain why there are only three Canadians? Have things changed so that it's no longer attractive for Canadians to consider these schools? Just curious.

Exchange rate is now a huge factor. 3 years ago the $ was at par. Now it's a 26% premium. It's awfully expensive for many to follow a NCAA dream that is not D1.

That is true. Also, simple matter of timing - admissions decisions aren't all made and Canadiens tend to announce later.

As a Canadian parent with our daughter playing DIII, exchange rate is important but not the ultimate deciding factor. Friends we have with daughters away at out-of-city/province schools playing hockey pay just slightly less than what we have paid each year. From school to school it differs in tuition costs, living costs and the academic money % you can negotiate with the school.

DIII hockey attracts fewer Canadians, especially western Canadian girls, because they do not get exposure to those teams (with exception of maybe Manitoba girls) and many players and parents do not understand the quality of DIII play. Its better hockey than Canadian college but not quite as strong as CIS though a McGill vs Plattsburg / Elmira would be interesting!!

McGill over the years has regularly beaten middle of the road D1 programs. I doubt that Platty or Elmira could play with a team of that calibre. While I am sure that their supporters would disagree, the days when strong D3 teams could beat many D1 teams are gone. Look at the Sacred Heart vs Yale games this season. SC was a middle of the pack D3 school and lost to a bottom half D1 team 10-2 and 13-0. Certainly Platty and Elmira would do better, but they aren't closing that gap.

I watched the UWO/McGill CIS final and I believe both Plattsburgh and Elmira would beat either of those teams. I found Plattsburgh much faster and more talented and better coached than UWO. The only reason UWO was even in the playoffs was because of phenomenal goaltending. These two DIII schools might have a bigger problem with McGill because they were more skilled top to bottom, but had a mediocre goaltender. Just my opinion.

However, the other reason Canadians are staying home might be because of the new scholarship program introduced by the CIS a couple of years ago. The entire CIS program is improving year in and year out (better coaching and recruiting, emphasis on good, quality education, etc.) and that may be a reason as well.

Also could have a lot to do with the crack-down on what some schools had been doing....Providing Canadian hockey players with athletic scholarships in the guise of "financial aid" to foreign students....seems that little game is over.

Not meaning to hijack the thread but comments like these make me shake my head. First off, last time I checked, hockey is a team game and the goalie is but one member of that team. Secondly, the only reason that they made the playoffs is because they only lost 1 game in Regulation the entire year. Unless I'm living in Bizarro world, that's a phenomenal season by any ones standards. The Western haters out there are always lurking aren't they?

Plattsburgh and Elmira beat up on middle-tier DIII programs by scores similar to 10-2 as well. Am I saying that either team would be .500 in DI play? Highly unlikely, But would they be able to get a win in a one-off game against a lower-tier DI program? Yes, in a highly-cometitive game, they would have a shot.

I don't know enough about McGill to say whether or not Plattsburgh or Elmira could compete with them.

Not a Western hater at all. Know the coach and have followed them closely over the years as my D was recruited there and we lived in London for nearly a decade...check out the stats on their goaltender...she was more than STELLAR....she was awesome. The rest of the team...mediocre.

Not mediocre at all. The team gelled like no other that I have seen. They bought into the coach's defense-first philosophy and had great timely scoring, all year. I don't need to look at the stats as I watched the majority of the games live. The goalie was great, no question about it, but the team-first philosophy was even better. Campbell's stats were on par with Nehring of Guelph and Kesteris of Toronto. Why didn't either one of those teams win Nationals? To say that the team wouldn't have made the playoffs without the goalie is doing everybody, including the coach that you know, a great disservice.
