2015-2016 Division I Commitments

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Commitments

Highly unlikely.

Ivy schools cannot issue "likely letters" prior to October 1 of Gr 12. Before that, no commitment is official anyway.

As long as she has her paperwork into Admissions in September, and of course most importantly has the necessary grades and SAT/ACT scores to meet the school's hurdles, there would be no problem.

The only risk would be that the coach might favour and rank more highly other incoming recruits in the admissions pile. But if as a player you end up say 5th-8th on the coach's final list in the fall of Grade 12, you're going to wish you'd known this information anyway back when you'd committed early, because you're not likely to be seeing the ice much if at all.

And, as has been noted separately, because of the importance of maintaining a strong relationship with Assabet for a future flow of prospects, she's likely to be given better than average treatment regardless of when she commits.

I'm sure the fact she attends St. Paul's and is on the US U18 team pretty much assure her a spot, and make the Assabet connection pretty much moot.

Exactly. So no downside at all to waiting.

Well, as was pointed out in the article, you then have to contend with recruiting pressures. Frankly, who cares? If they want to "commit" early, or at the last second, let them worry about it.

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Commitments

I would NOT be concerned for her. She is a long time Assabet Valley player and there is no way Harvard is going to decommit to her and risk their close and very productive association with Assabet Valley (and Nobles for that matter, although that isn't relevant in this case because she goes to St Pauls ... for now). They are carrying 8 former Assabet players on this year's roster and have 2 more coming in next season. I suppose if she tanked the SATs or her grades dropped she might have an issue, but it won't be a hockey related issue. They'll "manage" their commitments with Canadiens and mid-Westerners... :)

While their may not be high risk for this particular player for various reasons, I have been reminded that Harvard did renege on a commitment for 12-13 made more than a year earlier to an Assabet player.

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Commitments

“I’ve lived in Boston my whole life and when Harvard offered me a commitment spot it was an amazing feeling knowing I could play for my hometown in college. It has always been my dream since I was a little girl.” . . .

“I never put a deadline on myself for when I wanted to commit, it was something that just happened,” she said. “I knew Harvard was the place I wanted to be and my mind was made up. Now I can focus on my grades and SAT/ACT scores.”

This is all incredibly disturbing. Just hope things work out for this naif.

Why is this disturbing? My dream was to attend Harvard for as long as I could remember. I made that dream happen. Why shouldn't this girl have the same aspirations? She knows what is in front of her regarding grades and SATs/ACTs.

LOL. Obviously, there is nothing in the least wrong with wanting to attend Harvard. By all means, every kid should work towards getting to the school of their dreams, whatever that school may be.

I guess you didn't read the rest of the thread for the explanation then? Were you a varsity athlete? A legacy maybe? Unless you were granted admission to Harvard in Grade 10, and also guaranteed at the same time that you would also play on a varsity athletic roster, the comparison between you and this girl isn't relevant at all. Of course, if she has all this in writing, she needn't worry either.

As a matter of fact, one of my own kids was fortunate enough to get into the school she'd dreamed of ever since Grade 8, as a varsity athlete. Having that lofty goal no doubt motivated her to get grades and scores she probably otherwise would never have achieved. However, fully knowing the risks from too many others whose plans went sideways at the eleventh hour, she did not make a firm commitment until she knew she had the academic requirements in hand and also got a verbal OK from admissions. She could not have made a better decision.

If players wish to make commitments to schools prior to the summer after Grade 11 and/or without the necessary grades and scores that's certainly their prerogative....as long as they are going into it with their eyes wide open to the various risks they are taking, the track records of the respective coaches for honouring their word in the recruiting process, and have also prepared contingency plans in the not-so-rare event that things don't work out later.

You have said yourself that in doing your admission interviews as an alumni, you've marvelled at student-athletes very high expectations of their team roles. Where do you think these specific ideas quite often come from? Certainly too many student-athletes have unfortunately not done their own research and due diligence on a D1 program, and their competition for playing time, and in just as many cases they are also being sold a bill of goods from coaches willing to say virtually anything about playing time just to get a commitment. In both cases, there is a lot of naivety.

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Commitments

This is probably a stupid question and/or answered somewhere else but how do these players who commit to an Ivy know what they are getting in terms of financial aid? Its my understanding that the Ivies don't give out scholarships - and Harvard's website says all financial aid is need based only. So if one commits at grade 10 hypothetically, are they told what they can expect or are these only people who know that they have the financial wherewithal to pay regardless? Why, if like most of us, money is an issue, wouldn't you wait to find out what your "financial aid" package is and/or keep recruiting with scholarship schools?

A very good question.

I'm guessing in most of these cases of really early commitments, especially those from top prep schools, the cost is irrelevant. They've decided the Ivy League education is worth the full sticker price. Probably some of these parents went to those schools too.

For everyone else, there are a couple of ways to get an approximation of financial aid. Most schools have a financial aid calculator on their website to give you an initial read. By plugging in your incomes and assets, you can get a ballpark idea of what you would be likely to receive to see if that school might be even potentially viable financially. Generally HYP give the best aid, Dartmouth's close, and Cornell & Brown tend to be less generous. But the school giving the best offer does vary a lot with individual circumstances.

Once coaches have shown serious interest in committing to you, they can arrange to get an early read on your specific case from their Financial Aid Office, usually by early in the summer after Gr 11 before you have actually applied. By providing much more detailed info including your tax returns, etc. they will give you a written "early read" financial aid estimate. Your final aid package after you have been admitted should not be +/- more than about $1,000 off from this.

If you are looking for financial aid, this is another really important reason to delay a commitment: by comparing financial aid offers from different Ivys (assuming you have more than one with high interest), you can often significantly better your aid package. If you want Ivy A, but the pre-read from Ivy B was $3,000 better, you can go back with that written offer to Ivy A and they will typically match it, since they don't want to lose out on any student for financial reasons. This actually happens quite a bit.
