2015-2016 Division I Commitments

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Commitments

NCAA rules are the same for everyone,

Technically, I believe NCAA coaches can place one phone call to international prospects a year earlier - July 7-31 following sophomore year.

I'm not sure it matters that much as coaches can figure out how they can get US recruits to call them as well if they really want.

These are for the US players. Canadian players have different rules that allow the coaches to contact THEM EARLIER.

Again , Americans getting the short end of the stick.

International students can be contacted for a one week period (I believe) in August of their junior year. Other then that the same rules apply. Canadians also have, typically, a lot more real estate to cover to make one of those "unofficial visits". That being said, the interest has probably already been communicated.

We're looking for 2016-2017 now? :)

Hux...are you glad you assumed the task yet?

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Commitments

When are you going to start working on the 2017 Thread? ;)

I agree with North East Dad.

Yeah, the tough part is keeping track of which year you are actually working in, particularly in the late spring. It has been a lot easier now that the majority of the commitments are being posted in the thread already formatted, and all I need do is cut and paste. Making the new additions BOLD was a great suggestion, and one I should have caught onto sooner.

I'm sure we could probably have a thread for 2017 and have a commitment or two. Let's face it, there are talented players who know exactly where they want to go and there are coaches who have an eye on them. At this point I don't see going further than sophs though.

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Commitments

It might be useful to make the threads "sticky"at the top of the list until the class enters school. This way people wouldn't post in the wrong thread, and it would be easy to find them.

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Commitments

So there are different rules for international athletes.

Not the same. Clearly

There are different rules for International athletes presumably for every sport, not just hockey. Canadians are considered International in the NCAA's mind and because of our proximity and our talents in the sport of hockey, I guess it can be considered an advantage. My guess would be that in reality, there really are no barriers to communication as evidenced by comittments already being announced for 2015/2016, hence this thread. Also, if you note, all of the early, early announcements are from Americans, not Canadians in both this thread and the 2014/2015 Comittment threads. So I would guess, no real advantage after all.

No, I was serious. There are a few out there, and others very close!

So girls that are presently in Grade 8 are being asked to commit? (sp?)

That is incredibly ridiculous. They haven't even stepped inside a High School yet. Shame on the programs that are advancing that practice. Also, shame on the parents that are promoting it to their child as being the right time. Good grief!!

I recall making a tongue in cheek comment last year about the prospective student athletes having their school choice on their hospital ankle band at birth. Maybe it's time to take my tongue from my cheek?

I think that 2016-2017 commits would be a freshman now, but I totally agree that committing to a college as a freshman in high school is beyond ridiculous. That commitment could not be any more meaningless and the player is totally turning off all sorts of other potential opportunities.

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Commitments

It's "RIT". "Rochester" is a different school, which doesn't have varsity hockey.

Powers &8^]

Yeah, well Rennselaer is RPI so RIT will be fine as Rochester

Re: 2015-2016 Division I Commitments

I don't think it's fair to categorize the commitment of every kid at this age as beyond ridiculous. A mistake. To assume that for every student athlete, an early commitment means irrefutably that they're closing the door on better opportunities, or that the commitment is meaningless to the prospective student athlete. At least in a broad brushed...applies to all sort of way.

I'll stand behind my comment - B-E-Y-O-N-D R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S!!! How many HS freshman know what they want in a college (academic, social, environment), coach, and hockey experience and don't have that change over the 2-3 years before they have to formally commit? How many reasons are there that a college would drop a HS freshman recruit before they graduate - coach change, player doesn't develop, injury, better player comes along, academic issues, etc.? The big $ sports (football, men's basketball, etc.) have freshman commits and the commit/decommit percentages are appalling. The commitment means virtually nothing to either the player or the school. Any high school freshman that is good enough that a school would want them to commit will have MANY MANY opportunities. Committing at this age is ALL about ego - and usually it is the ego of the parents, not the kid.
