2015-2016 Coaching Changes

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

Okay, my first attempt at a reply with quote didn't work because I am pretty close to computer illiterate. Not only that, but I have nine phone messages I don't know how to get to on our new house phones. My wife is on her annual week trip with the girls to Florida and will be home tonight so.... By the way everyone who has sent me a "notification" in the last three years, thank you. I figured out how to read them, don't know how to send one. I think I'll get back to reading my David Donald book on Lincoln now. That I can do.

Post of the year. Dry, self-deprecating humor is the best!

I'd say that the fact that current and former Brown women's hockey players who all know him well and think he's a terrific choice makes him especially well qualified.

Did they? Where is that known? Also, the fact that a group of Brown current and ex-players who have perennially failed to achieve for the past 5-10 years think that he is a great choice doesn't necessarily make him a great choice. Everyone at Brown (and Princeton for that matter) thought Amy Bourbeau was a great choice - look how that worked out.

If what is posted is true and Brown hired a player's coach, I think it's smart. Give the kids a great experience and maybe future recruits will find out.

Combination of direct feedback from a few sources plus published social media comments from several more.

You must have very different sources than I do. I can assure you that not everyone at either Brown or Princeton ever thought she was a great choice even at the beginning. She's never had a reputation in either locale as a decent recruiter or strong communicator for example, yet she chose to immediately terminate an assistant coach who was fantastic at it nor replace him with someone with those skill sets she lacks. It ultimately did her in.

Although the Brown team may not have achieved success in recent years, I can assure you that those players I've heard feedback from would have been valuable assets on virtually any D1 team. And while I agree that any team players' positive opinions may not necessarily make any choice a great coach, a lack of positive feedback definitely makes for a poor one.

Wow. I guess it's easy to say that now but I don't recall hearing any negative commentary when she was hired. As for Coady being a great recruiter, I recall many people wondering what Coach Murphy was thinking when she brought him on to her staff. He was not as well received on the recruiting trail as you seem to think and obviously he didn't do that great of a job considering their struggles during his time spent there.

You hit the nail on the head "sort off"....Let's give this new coach a chance...If he can communicate well, and rebuilds the program with a renewed recruiting program, then things should improve. A strong recruiting effort is essential to any rebuild, but as others have alluded to in this thread there is more to it than that. Case in point "Edmonton Oilers". Not only do you need to recruit strongly, you also need to foster and develop that talent to the next level once they arrive. Easier said than done.

Not many would be motivated to throw a new coach under the bus publicly in a big way regardless of the views they might share amongst others in the rinks.

In Ontario at least, the recruits and parents found Coady very gregarious and easy to talk to, as did the Brown players at the time. While virtually no one is ever universally liked, he was seen by most--including my daughter-- as a big positive, though being a big personality it's not hard to see why he might also have had detractors. He had a very tough sell though, with the badly losing program and a head coach who was polarizing at best, but did manage to convince a few quality players to choose Brown despite all that. And he was certainly a significantly higher profile on the recruiting trail than anyone at Brown who followed.

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

It has been quiet here lately. What's the latest at Mankato? What about assistants at MD, Quinnipiac, Ohio?

I was just thinking the same thing. Also what about new St. Cloud assistants? Had not heard anything about UWEC but just checked their website and there are no coaches listed at all so I guess they've all been canned. Anyone with any info there?

Harvard rides to Edmonton's rescue in the person of new GM Peter Chiarelli '87? Time will tell....

That was an excellent hire by the Oilers (My Fav NHL team until we got our own team in town in '92). Chiarelli is from here.

Re: 2015-2016 Coaching Changes

First day in office and she's already been named as an assistant coach for the U18 team. Not too shabby!

So, she will be working under Minnesota's Joel Johnston - probably just a sneaky underhanded way to learn what she knows! :)
