The bye week is nice for getting healthy and a little rest but's that's about it. They lost after the bye during the reg season. You could tell they were out of sync in the 1st half. I think they'll be fine next week.

Good enough is my take on the game. Houston has a solid D and are well coached. Not sure why they don't deal a #1 pick for an established QB on a team going nowhere like Rivers or Brees, but whatever. Don't think anybody else they'll face has that pass rush with the Giants and Seahawks out of the playoffs.

Regarding Pittsburgh/KC - don't think either defense can stay with the Pats O. Don't really want to face Rapistburger-Brown-Bell but think Pats can win a shootout.

The offense, special teams gave Houston all their points by turnovers. The d shut them down. I don't care who they played the d was great.

Hard to tell how good the D was, because the Houston O was so bad. There were several open receivers missed and a touchdown pass dropped. The one decent drive Houston had was extended by an undisciplined penalty. Belichick made sure Rowe won't do that again.

Also hard to tell how bad the Pats O was because Houston's D is actually pretty good. Like to see some more stats, but allowing the fewest yards would seem to be quite a feat, because with an offense that appears incapable of sustaining drives, the other team is going to have the ball a lot. I'm not too worried about the interceptions. Neither was a misread or throwing into coverage. Both were within six inches of being completions. More an example of regression to the mean -- Brady's been lucky this year because the tips have been INCs rather than INTs.

One way of looking at this is that the Pats reaped the benefits of taking advantage of a weak schedule to get the top seed. A performance like that against a better team might have meant a loss.

exactly right. they are not going to face a tougher D, nor a lousier O. for as many flaws as may have been exposed, mookie is not sure that another team can mimic the texans to take advantage of them there.
 
Pats get the match up they didn't want. Funny how the 4 best QBs left won, not shocking really.

Agree, though one thing that makes me feel a little better is that Pittsburgh couldn't punch it in. Seems curious because they've got a big, strong, 150-200 yard running back, but I'm not sure his style works so well close to the goal line. Pats "bend but don't break" defense is very similar to KC's, and I don't think that 18 points will beat the Pats.

Pats have beaten Steelers in past by picking on their soft secondary and getting a lead which takes a lot of the Steelers running game out of the equation. Then you're just shadowing Brown all day. Need to eliminate dumb turnovers particularly on kick returns.

Would really rather not face Rogers if we get that far, even before yesterday's game. A mobile QB who can throw deep is the death of the Patriots secondary which rarely turns around to see where the ball is when covering downfield. I think he'd pick them apart over the middle as well.

Didn't want to think too far ahead, but I'm not sure I'd want to face Ryan either.

Meh, Tomlin can say what he wants behind closed doors (or so he thought). No big deal. I do agree though that he's part of the advantage the Pats have as he's not a very good coach.

Regarding "A-holegate", I wonder how, when he's doesn't know he's being recorded, Tomlin refers to other rivals – “The fine young men of Baltimore, and my esteemed friend and colleague John Harbaugh”?

I also wonder how Belichick refers to Tomlin and the Steelers when he's not being recorded.

What may be relevant about this incident is that it reflects a lack of discipline. It was monumentally stupid to live stream it – what if he said something that was actually mattered? If one of the Pats shows lack of discipline, they either get chewed out on national TV (ask Eric Rowe about that) or shipped to Cleveland.

The more I think about, the less bothered I am by it. What I am questioning now is why wasn't Antonio Brown listening to his coach? Why was he goofing around and putting a coach's post-game motivational speech out on Facebook Live? I blame him. :) I'm OK with what Mike Tomlin said, when he said it, why he said it, etc.

Steelers don't strike me as the most disciplined team in the world. Maybe that's hard to do nowadays but Tomlin seems more like a cheerleader ala Pete Carroll than as strict coach.

You're going to destroy them, as painful as that is to contemplate.

What is this, 10 AFC title games in the last 16? 12?

Christ is it going to be good when Brady retires, Belichick finally has a heart attack on the field, and the Patriots go back to sucking for 20 years. As hard as this is to fathom, it will even be sweeter than the Cowboys sucking.

“Foolish”, “selfish”, and “inconsiderate” and “him” (as opposed to something more passive-aggressive or indirect like “foolish action” or use of passive voice) aren't the words of a cheerleader.

Pretty clear I have a higher regard than Tomlin than most folks. I think he's a good not great coach (I'd say in the upper third or fourth) and personally I think he's far more accountable and direct than most coaches. His regret over the fact that “azzholes” was broadcast and his mention of responsibility of role modeling seems genuine to me and not just parroting a Steelers or NFL line of BS.
