2015-16 Alaska Legislature Official Season Thread…scratching the KRACH.

Re: 2015-16 Alaska Legislature Official Season Thread…scratching the KRACH.

Re: 2015-16 Alaska Legislature Official Season Thread…scratching the KRACH.

As noted in another thread, UA President Jim Johnsen has stepped up his re-structure time line because our do-nothing legislature has done nothing, and the potential cut to the UA system is still $50m.
His main concept is combining the three separate campuses into one system with one administrative structure, and more importantly, one accreditation process. I would think that a University system with only one accreditation process and one administrative structure would be limited to one NCAA team per sport.

A comment in the other thread envisioned UAF dropping all athletic teams, but I believe that both UAA and UAF would retain certain programs. I think there was an earlier Newsminer article discussing it. Depending on what they keep, something like:

UAA:
Basketball
Volleyball
Track & Field
Gymnastics
Alpine skiing

UAF:
Hockey
Rifle
Cross-country running
Nordic skiing
Swimming

But how this all pans out, and when, is anyone’s guess.

I would maintain that it makes more sense to roll UAS into UAF and keep UAF/S and UAA separate within the UA system. UAS is such a small overall contributor that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to incur the additional admin to operate it as its own institution, and they already work closely with UAF on the fisheries program.

The idea of not permanently filling the UAF chancellor spot until this mess gets sorted out has been circulating for weeks...I wasn't surprised with the news.

It'll be a while before Athletics gets sorted out. Single accreditation, if it happens, is at least a couple years away. I would bet that implementation of this single accreditation idea, if it comes to fruition, would be a total nightmare. You think Nanooks and Seawolves don't get along now...

I will say this: If UAA loses its hockey team because of this "single accreditation" thing I will not give a single dime to the UA.

Until it's all sorted out...recruiting decent players is going to be a nightmare. Top in-State recruit Nolan Walker just "decomited" to UAA...now committed to SCSU. This could get ugly!

This. We're all hockey fans so it's a big deal to us, but most couldn't care less. As Johnsen's news release indicates, the real battle and power struggle will be over where the degree programs, and to some extent administrative functions, end up or have emphasis. There are lot of business partnerships and community support opportunities on the line. The location of School of Education, Management/Business, and Engineering will see a lot of back room politics. Although they have no legal authority over how the U allocates or spends the state funding allocation, certain legislators will have a hard time not trying to twist arms.

What about the "teams" and "gender specific" teams though?

I would hazard a guess the if they had to choose one over the other, most opponents would opt for Anchorage for hockey.

Hockey will be in anchorage due to the extra cost to fly all teams to _airbanks and extra night hotel cost.

Plus, isn't Sullivan the larger and better maintained are a in the larger city? It's hard to believe that Fairbanks would win out on that.

The Nanooks do have the better mascot and look, though.

Yup, I saw that on Twitter. Crapola.

Re: 2015-16 Alaska Legislature Official Season Thread…scratching the KRACH.

It’s all just a guess anyway and there is no time line. I’m not sure they would have to eliminate any teams, or maybe they would drop all athletics university wide, or just all UAF athletics.

But if they do divvy up sports you can be sure men’s and women’s bball and volleyball will stay in the Alaska Airlines Center. That would almost guarantee we keep hockey. We also have stronger community support. And although the Carlson Center is adequate for a DI team (just as functional as the Sullivan), I’m sure as soon as the price of oil sky rockets, the legislature will build us a “vanilla” version the Alaska Airlines Center (“Ice, Ice Baby”). :)

Just as functional as the Sully? Now THAT'S funny.

Interview with Johnsen in today's DNM: UA president: No precedent to follow: University leaders have no model to emulate for consolidation

This has train wreck written all over it for athletics. The only way I see UAF and UAA keeping their own departments is if the NCAA lets us grandfather in.

Re: 2015-16 Alaska Legislature Official Season Thread…scratching the KRACH.

A certain segment of Alaska residents will want each campus to keep their athletic teams, and a larger segment will want to eliminate athletics in their entirety. The compromise position might be to divvy up the teams. Dealing up a $50m cut is the least of our worries. Think how nasty things will get when we try to decide if we are the "Seawolves" or the "Nanooks." Maybe we are just "Alaska" with no mascot. Forest Karr was a visionary. :)

Re: 2015-16 Alaska Legislature Official Season Thread…scratching the KRACH.

Looking at the NCAA minimum sport requirements keeping athletics at both schools while staying D2 will be difficult.
Division II institutions have to sponsor at least five sports for men and five for women, (or four for men and six for women), with two team sports for each gender, and each playing season represented by each gender.

It appears both schools can only drop one women's sport or one men's sports if they want to stay D2.
UAF: Men's Cross Country can't be dropped as it is the only fall sport. That leaves Skiing, Basketball or Hockey for men, all women's sports, though Cross Country wouldn't really make sense and the Co-Ed Rifle team.
UAA: Men's Cross Country can't be dropped as it is the only fall sport. Men's and Women's Track & Field can't be dropped as it is the only spring sport. That leaves Skiing, Basketball or Hockey for men and Volleyball, Cross Country (though it wouldn't make much sense with the men's team being kept), Skiing, Basketball and Gymnastics for women.

When looking at men's sports, which seems more likely to be dropped, none of these options seem good as both schools have good skiing teams, correct? And dropping basketball just seems weird. Every school has basketball. That just leaves hockey for both schools or the co-ed rifle team at UAF. Dropping one sport isn't really going to accomplish much, will it? If all of this is correct, it would seem one school would need to drop athletics entirely for there to be any real cost savings.
Then again UAF doesn't appear to have any spring sports at all, which is against the NCAA rules, so who knows maybe I'm completely wrong.

I gotta imagine the brass at UAA will not be happy about this. Likely lose a bunch of programs and take a haircut on athletics all to keep UAF happy? Yeah, that won't sit well.

I'm sure UAA isn't happy with any of it, just like UAF isn't. But I don't follow your "all to keep UAF happy" spin on things.
