Re: 2014 USA National Player Development Camp allocations

The Midwest tryouts for development camp were this past weekend. Can't comment personally as I wasn't there but apparently many are really unhappy about the process. Even before tryouts were done many agreed that there was little liklihood of best players getting selected. Apparently a lot of people suggested changes after last year and yet no modifications were made. Heard a couple of parents wonder whether it was a waste of time.

Just what were the complaints about the process?

Am I missing something or is Jincy Dunne not on the list for '97 defense??

Re: 2014 USA National Player Development Camp allocations

Pretty much sour grapes. Parents thinking their kids are better than they actually are. I suspect it's probably the same in all districts.

What if the complaints are valid? I know that some Districts have had their Women's Director removed because of the players they sent to National Camp. Don't assume it's parents whinning 100% of the time.

It is unfair to assume "sour grapes". There is alot of talent, and alot of players. I'm not sure how much of an evaluation can be made in three days with so many girls all at high talent levels. Concerns I have heard are about making the process better rather then the players that were selected.

Re: 2014 USA National Player Development Camp allocations

What if the complaints are valid? I know that some Districts have had their Women's Director removed because of the players they sent to National Camp. Don't assume it's parents whinning 100% of the time.

The biggest complaint I heard was the number of girls at the tryout. Last year the Central district started allowing any girl to attend the tryout without any affiliate tryout. In the past each state would hold a tryout and send the allotted number of girls to the district tryout. Now without any prescreening by the affiliate any skill level can attend. This leads to large skill differences of line mates on the scrimmage portion of the tryout. The scrimmage portion accounts for 80% of the tryout ice time. For example one of the teams had a forward line made up of 3 previous national camp attendees. While other teams may have had only one or no previous national camp attendees on their roster.

The goalie situation is also a complaint. In the 16/17 age group there were 20 goalies assigned to 8 teams. This gave each goalie slightly more than one period of playing time per game. Some goalies faced less than 25 live shots for the entire weekend.

Other common complaints revolve around the subject of bias and politics. The tryouts are run and evaluated by Wisconsin staff. I'm not convinced there is bias towards Wisconsin girls but here are a couple incidents which could lead you to yell bias.

1) The District Girls/Womens Rep awarded one of the spots to a girl in the rink lobby before all the ice sessions were complete. I feel this was at the least very unprofessional. The girl is from Wisconsin and it appeared the family and the District Rep were well acquainted. I also notice another girl with the same last name was awarded a spot in a different age group(sister or cousin?).

2)Another Wisconsin girl was awarded a spot but was unable to complete the tryout due to a back injury. This girl missed 33% of the scrimmage ice. I don't know if this is evidence of bias and it is a tough situation for all involved. Probably should have given her an at large birth.

Like all tryouts there is a fair amount of sour grapes but the Central District doesn't seem to be aware of how their process and actions help promote hard feelings.

This seems like an odd statement to me since USA hockey selects 2 of their own evaluators to attend each of the district tryouts, along with the 2 district selected evaluators, so they all have to be in agreement, right? Honestly, to me it seems like the same old thing. "sour grapes" Let's face the facts, that all of these girls that attend the tryouts are very good and generally playing at a high level. The differences between them can be pretty minute, but there is always one or two that rise above the rest. Why can't people just trust in the system? Most of the complainers have little or no hockey experience as I see it, so how can they call themselves an expert above the evaluators who live hockey 24/7? There are a lot of really talented players out there to be sure, but in the end, there is always a winner and a loser, someone who gets the job and someone who doesn't. Its called life.

So the process can't be improved upon? I don't believe USA Hockey has "2 of it's own" at every district. The last District to lose a Women's Director sent many "C" rated players and cost his District spots. More girls that didn't make it to National Camp went D1 than did make it to National Camp. Thus Director Fired!

No process is perfect but Just A Dad brings up so valid points where improvement could easily be made. In MN the girls go through 5-6 tryouts to be considered for National Camp, this takes place over weeks.

And BTW, your tone suggest to me that you made a back door deal for your daughter!

Nope. No back door deals here, just an outsider looking in, but glad you are so quick to accuse. I do agree with a longer process to pick the girls and certainly do not agree with "back door" or "in lobby" deals for that matter. If that is being done, that is truly a shame. Best of luck to all of the girls who made it and for those who didn't, keep working hard and leave no doubt.

I think the point that the parents were trying to make (prior to any selection or not) was that the process is flawed. Not only are there a lot of girls (too many for this process) but the talent range is huge. Like top of Tier 1 players to bottom of Tier 2 players. Worse the distribution of them makes a difference. An average player can look really good when paired with other highly skilled players and a really good player might not demonstrate their talent when trying to compensate for less skilled players by (for example) playing out of position because thats what is best for the team. Not hard for a highly skilled Tier 1 forward to look good against a low tier 2 defense player....you get the idea. So I am not sure it's sour grapes about the outcome but the realization that the process creates evaluation issues by design. Also heard coaching was non existent in addressing these issues. Subsequently heard at he midwest tryout that they use they tryouts to fill other camps and teams. That sounds like it complicates things too.

Re: 2014 USA National Player Development Camp allocations

How does Shattucks do it? 9 goals in 55 games gets to National Camp, is the New England District having a talent problem? Mass is not in the New England District, correct? Otherwise the Assabet girls would be there?

MN needs more spots for National Camp!!!

There are several NE players that play for Assabet.
