2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

Well stated, zoofer. This sad charade/situation needs to be dealt with immediately. Otherwise, it will remain a millstone around the program's neck for the forseeable future. Enough damage has been done to the program, and unless some positive and proactive action is taken soon to put this whole sorry spectacle behind the program, the damage will only get worse, and the recovery period will likely extend past the careers of even the current underclassmen. Time for those who created the mess to step forward, earn your keep, and deal with it. NOW. As zoofer says - using a very familiar phrase which has been uttered by some of those who are now twiddling their thumbs in self-imposed exile - do as you contend, and attend to the needs of the student-athletes first.

With so many roster spots empty as it is, there IS an opportunity for a forward-thinking program to turn this around. Or UNH can just sit with its thumb up its ... nose and wait for the courts to sort it out.

Over to you, BB35 ...

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

So in continuing my belief that UNH needs to resolve its issues/investigation ASAP to the betterment of its women's program, I went to the website USNH.edu to try and figure out what the role of a Trustee of UNH has as his/her responsibility. Given that President Huddleston has decided to let lawyers take control of this incident, rather than lead as his position calls for, IMHO, how can we get the Trustees engaged to protect the University's image, and provide stability to an athletic department that seems to be fractured at best! I'm hoping that some of my fellow posters have a better understanding of the University System and exactly how we can help get those in roles of responsibility involved.....this thread has 15 pages of comments dating back to 12/9/2013, with the previous thread deleted which went back further......it's March now. My point being that during that whole time, we have seen 2 press releases from UNH....the initial faux pas and the clarification 6 weeks later....I honestly believe it's time for someone to take the reigns and show some fortitude! I believe in UNH!!

CASSANDRA VILGRAIN NAMED TO HOCKEY EAST ALL-ROOKIE TEAM

WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Freshman forward Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alberta) of the University of New Hampshire was named to the Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.

In 32 games played – she missed the last two games of the season – Vilgrain recorded nine goals and eight assists for 17 points to tie for second on the team in goals, rank third in points as well as tie for sixth in assists. She also tied for second in power-play goals (three), was third in shooting percentage (.108) and fifth in shots (83).

Vilgrain recorded a point in 14 of 32 games with two multiple-point efforts, including career highs in both assists (two) and points (three) Nov. 10 at the University of Vermont, and a personal-best two goals Jan. 25 at nationally-ranked Boston College.

Vilgrain scored a goal three consecutive games in October as part of a season-best four-game point streak.

In 20 Hockey East league games, Vilgrain tallied 13 points on eight goals and five assists.

So who takes over as head coach? Shouldn't this job already be posted?

I checked yesterday, and it wasn't up on the NCAA site, so who knows. I heard the players were to be "informed" in the next few weeks. Informed of what, I'm not sure.

I feel that they need the whole program to go into a different direction right away so the new coach can FILL the very small roster quickly!

Well, they already have a fair number coming in, and should have three injured players ready to go come September.

I repeat ........

Kacey Bellamy indicates she is interested in coaching ......... http://www.nhmagazine.com/January-20...Kacey-Bellamy/

That would certainly be a "fresh start" ....

I'm sure Ms. Bellamy is a fantastic young woman and there's no doubt she's a fantastic hockey player. But do you really think that the right direction for this program is to have someone with zero coaching experience, come in and take over a D1,highly visibly program, to bring it back to its former glory?

Bellamy was a volunteer assistant coach with UNH in 10-11 for what it's worth, though I agree the point still stands.

Anyone have any idea if Carisa Zaban would be interested? She's done well at Lake Forest - going for a league title today actually.

You'd think Erin Hamlen would be considered as well, but I assume there'd be problems in trying to pry her from Merrimack, and I wouldn't like to see that for the sake of the sport.

yes

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

From what I've been told, Coach Hamlen might also have negative views of Mr. Scarano...so while I agree with your analysis, it ain't gonna happen!

This would be a tough gig for a coach with minimal experience, made more complicated by an administration that doesn't appear to be that coach-friendly

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

I can't imagine why Bellamy wouldn't be welcomed as part of the coaching staff.

However, is there some reason why one of the existing two interim coaches, with infinitely more coaching experience, would not be considered frontrunners for the position assuming they would have interest?

Appointing anyone to a head coaching position without considerable previous coaching experience is just not a good idea, for either the players or the coach. Even ones with Olympic experience--it didn't work out very well for Northeastern or Yale, where both Schuler and Witt ended up losing their jobs and going back to assistant roles.

And being a young neophyte to the HC role with a difficult and unsupportive administration would be doubly problematic.

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

Well, Miss Bellamy issued an emphatic no when queried today.

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

Any updates on Coaching situation with the UNH Women? I had heard that there was a meeting between AD and some of the team last week and it wasn't warm and fuzzy and there was no commitment to the present coaches. What's up?

I, and others, always suspected that Coach Wood was brought in to be Mac's eventual replacement, and if so, I can't see why anything would have changed. Maybe I'm cynical, but I just don't see Marty going out of his way on this hire. They have someone who could step in, and I think they'll take the easy route. Unless, of course, Wood's public support for Mac on Facebook has doomed him as well.

Re: 2014 UNH Wildcats: Ending Strong and Starting Fresh

To clarify... I have no information that Wood was brought in to be the eventual head coach. It just made sense... A younger guy with head coaching experience and connections to the Minnesota recruiting scene. Plus, why leave Minnesota unless you had the opportunity and assurance to move up?

More often than not, when there is a head coach change to change direction, the whole staff is changed. Not saying that will happen here, but not that uncommon.
