2014 Stanley Cup - Don't Toews me, man!!!

Re: 2014 Stanley Cup - Don't Toews me, man!!!

Decided to sit and watch the Bruins. Detroit goes up 2-0. I change the channel to CNBC to see the game on that channel. Bruins score. I leave the hotel to get dinner. Bruins tie. I drive around, can't look at my phone, Bruins win in OT. Moral of story - I can't plan to sit and watch the Bruins.

Got back from being out and put NBCSN to watch the Kings/Sharks and it's blacked out!! Crap. I forgot I'm in Sharks land. The hotel tv does not get whatever local station that carries the Sharks. Bummer. I'm watching the Wild-Avs right now.

Bertuzzi changed a bit. I haven't heard anything about Ott lately. Just sayin'.

And time will tell with Cooke. Again, this may be a blip. If it is, awesome. If it's not, I will admit I'm wrong and be for him not being in the league anymore.

Bertuzzi played a little rough but went into psychopath revenge mode and did something blatantly criminal. For that he was suspended for a season.

Matt Cooke plays with constant disregard and possibly malice for the health and well-being of his fellow tradesfolk.

Matt Cooke's behavior has to be STOPPED. None of these suspensions have served as a deterrent. Matt Cooke plays to maim. This is the biggest difference. It's not the specific action... It's the consistent behavior.

Re: 2014 Stanley Cup - Don't Toews me, man!!!

Wings are done. It was a good run to make the playoffs, but facing the Presidents Trophy winners isn't helping. Can't do it without offense. One goal per game scored so far isn't going to win you the series.

Shame that Howard (and after tonight Gustafsson also) will be drawn and quartered by the vocal fans for not winning them this series.

As a Wings fan from the days Marcel Dionne, Dennis Polonich or Reed Larson or Jim Rutherford or Greg Stefan I think it is in our DNA to blame goalies. But the wings of the 20-teens are not losing because of the goalies. Good enough to make a 16 team tournament but far from good enough to win it. Sometimes I think the playoff streak is more important to the franchise than actually winning in the playoffs.

Again....last suspension was 3 years ago. Time will tell if this is a blip or not.

As I have thought more about this, I'm kinda in the "leopard doesn't change his spots" camp. Cooke was sooooo bad for sooooo long that it is hard for me to find his conversion sincere. He was such a dirty, sneaky, dangerous ****head that I question whether he really found religion, or just realized he was going to lose his job if he didn't change his behavior. If that was the case, then I find it hard to believe it was just a blip and more likely it was his true self being revealed once again. (Even though there have been worse hits that have gone unpunished - the issue of inconsistency of enforcement by the NHL being a separate topic.)

Holy crapoli - what happened to the Avs? Totally dominated by Minny at the X, and if they don't turn it around they're toast. Varlamov kept the score in single digits last night.

I'm still saying the Jackets will win in six.

Matt Cooke is an utter and complete piece of **** who should be thrown out of the league. It takes 30 minutes to watch a highlight package of his transgressions. All you Minnesota fans who are defending this guy now that he's yours should be ashamed of yourselves.

Nice of Patrick Kane to join the 2014 playoffs. Hope he stays.
Yeah, but no one is defending him. Nice try though.

Based upon his overall history, I am more inclined to think that his "good" behavior was the blip and not this latest incident.

So, 20% of his career is a blip? I have to disagree. Three years isn't a blip, it's a trend. A season is a blip. Three is not.

Actually, all of you who are whining that the punishment doesn't fit the crime are defending him. And the fact that some are pointing to his suspension-free past few seasons is just enabling the guy. If that same knee-to knee hit came from Parise, he probably would be sitting less games than Seabrook. Matt Cooke comes with baggage. That baggage is a career of these types of plays and that's what this suspension is. Maybe the seven games did take into consideration his changed ways, because otherwise it could've been 10.

I'm sorry, but this is preposterous.

This.

Rationalizing is defending in this case.

Re: 2014 Stanley Cup - Don't Toews me, man!!!

For the way Cooke played before 2011, 3 years is a hell of a lot more than a blip.

Matt Cooke has a reputation and he has definitely earned it. But, anyone who believes he's been the same player the last 3 years hasn't been paying attention.

Ding ****ing ding.

You're still ignoring the fact that none of us are saying he didn't deserve the suspension. We're saying that Seabiscuit's suspension was far too short in comparison and that guys like Bickel get off without even a review. It's ridiculous. All we're calling for is some goddam consistency.

Especially when the NHL is setting itself up for a massive, massive lawsuit when the NHLPA decides to b*chslap the NHL for their willful ignorance of the concussion issue. They don't even give the appearance they care. At least the NFL is starting to sit players and fine them for the kind of hits that will cause people to drink through a straw or give them CTE in a decade.

Are you suggesting that a player's history should not play a part in the length of the suspension?

Nope. Have no issue with what Cooke got. I have an issue with what seaboy and bickel got.. Big difference.

The NHL continues to show over and over what a joke its player safety dept. really is.

I honestly think they should differentiate the 2 and explain it. Claiming his history got him 5 games while the hit itself got 2 would help, or whatever the case might be...it makes it easier to compare apples to apples.

Sure. And then they can explain their safety video and Bickels knee that got zero. And since they cant they wont cause they know they cant. Or they could admit that all 7 of Cookes was rep only, but thats not what they said in the video they made explaining the Cooke suspension.

Agreed. More transparency in the process would be helpful.

I don't follow the NHL very closely, so I don't know Seabrook's history with dirty hits. That being said, the hit on Backes was pretty dirty. If he has no history of such play, I think 3 games is about right for a "first offender." I would have to think that if the two plays were switched around, that Cooke would probably have received 10+ games. Also, Seabrook did get 5 and a game misconduct, so you have to factor that somewhat into the analysis.

On the other end, you have Cooke who is known as a dirty player (although, has been relatively clean the last couple years, and does seem to have made strides to become not as dirty of a player). As you mentioned, perhaps this normally would be a 2 game suspension, but his reputation bumps it up. Again, had the two plays been switched around, perhaps Seabrook doesn't even get suspended?

Like I said, I don't follow the NHL anywhere nearly as close as I follow college hockey, so I might be missing some of the context (i.e. Seabrook's history) in this case. Ultimately, I agree with you that some transparency would be nice for fans to digest how the suspensions came out as they did.
