2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

As for the women, they solidified their position as the Olympic world's biggest losers by delivering a monumental choke job against Canada. Understand that there are only two decent international women's teams and the U.S. always finishes behind Canada on the world's biggest stage. Poor strategy and poor execution in the third period did the trick this time. Many of the Team USA gals cried when they received their silver medals. Sorry, but they got exactly what they deserved.

And if you're sitting there still attempting to muster up some sort of pride in either of those hockey teams, you are nuts. Why should we care if they don't? It's only about the effort if a team actually puts forth the effort. The guys didn't.

Meanwhile, the women's hockey movement in this country got a kick in the teeth in Sochi. Our Olympians have firmly established themselves as Canada's punching bag. It all comes down to the Olympics and Team USA always finds a way to screw it up. They barnstorm the country for months prior to the Games, seeking support, drumming up enthusiasm, only to wilt when we all finally pay attention.

Was there anyone watching on TV who, just a few minutes into the third period, didn't say: Are they really going to sit back like this? And as Canada pressed shift after shift, the U.S. weakened, then panicked and then crumbled. When the Canadians finally scored to cut the deficit to 2-1, there wasn't any doubt which team would win. The outcome was inevitable.

There was no way Team USA could turn it back on late in the game. It's one of the hockey laws of physics: A team in motion tends to stay in motion. A team on its heels tends to stay on its heels. Take nothing away from Canada, but all the Americans had to do was find a way to stay the course. Instead, they played scared and coughed up the ultimate prize. So much for Yankee ingenuity. If you missed it, tune in again in four years and you can see a replay, but with different personnel.

The women's team is what it is -- No. 2 in a two-team top tier. But with any luck we won't have to witness this sort of performance by a men's team again. There is talk that the NHL no longer will halt its season for the Olympics. That would mean the Olympic roster would be filled by, well, anyone but NHLers. And that would be terrific. Thank you Tom Powers Pioneer Press

The problem with this sort of scathing critique by the likes of Tom Powers is he really has no idea what team is the better team or should be winning, because as he admits, he only pays attention every four years. It almost reads as though he had a story written in his head by the middle of the third period and he is venting because he had to write a totally different story once Canada rallied. The U.S. certainly didn't lose because it was back on its heels in the OT, so I'm left wondering how closely he even watched the game.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Lot of publicity with the fights...a spread on a few players in People magazine, and the kicker- a noon game on NBC so homemakers, the lunch crowd in bars, the treadmillers at the gym etc. were tuned in. Timing and accessability are everything.

So fighting in hockey IS good for the game haha. Don Cherry was actually right about something?

That's Tom Powers' column.

Sorry, the post just got me in a foul mood. The Wizard post was way off base

No, just haymakers and wrestling in the crease, like wrecks in auto racing, are what get air time on the news. Fine line though between the casual fan you may gain, and the mother that says to little Janey "I know you want to play hockey, but it is just too rough, what with all the fighting and wrestling in the crease."

Personally, I'll take a few new Janeys throwing on a jersey and taking to the ice over a few dozen casual fans who may or may not show up at games.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I think that there is one factor that is being overlooked in all of this, and that is that in some respects the women's game, when played at the highest level, can be more entertaining than the men's game.

I certainly enjoy it more.

I cringe at the nasty cutting remarks made - even on this forum - regarding women's hockey. It seems like hockey overall should be heading toward the form of hockey played by women and maybe overall we need to start appreciating the strengths of that form.

Isn't it about sustainability? Doesn't the future hold a sport that looks much more like women's hockey than the current men's version? Not many seem to discuss this publicly, but it is being talked about, right? Quietly? With great concern?

Men's hockey is fine if you are comfortable watching people cripple themselves for sport - at least with the woman the sport is played in a manner which increases the chances of long term survival of bodies and minds. I can't even watch men's hockey enjoyably anymore - all I can 'see' is the unfolding and incremental brain damage.

We're no longer able to pin the later in life effects of brain damage on the player's character flaws - the chain is tightening on the medical connection between repeated hits and a multitude of 'life down the drain' medical affects.

Universally, boxing is a 'bad' sport given our medical knowledge. Fighting and frequent purposely planned high speed collisions have to be close to that. Women's hockey is what organized hockey should look like in the long term in order to continue to thrive as a sport.

With that said, I think the number of watchers of the women's olympic finals was a happy result of multiple circumstances, but maybe it will benefit the game overall and the women's game in particular.

Sorry for the OT rant, the level of amazement for the number of viewers of the gold medal game ticked me off.

Well I enjoyed the men's side in Sochi as I always have in the Olympics. Take away the bulk of NHL style thuggery...the too commonplace fisticuffs and the result is an extremely entertaining brand, and in my opinion the way the game should be...was meant to be played.

Funny. I got the opposite feeling to what he said about the Olympics, etc. Women's hockey in the US is extremely strong. With Canadian men's hockey supplying much of the NHL talent out there...one would expect that Canadian women would dominate. Not true, the two are on par and thats a great thing for the sport and for women's college hockey.

Not sure what you mean by "either." Are you implying that the women "don't care?" How can you say that? Besides the fact that the strategy that was employed may not have been the best way to handle a 2-0 lead (an understatement, I suppose), how can anyone say that they didn't care???? Did you even WATCH the game? I saw a group of women that was devastated after that game. And they don't get another chance (and some of them never will) for four more years. There's no NHL for them to go back to. And I don't think anyone appreciates the vicious tone of your remarks, either. It's not as if they tried to lose the game.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Funny that when the long shot hit the pipe, I was glad it didn't go in since the Canadian complaining would have been deafening......yet now I wish it had gone in for the Win......

I don't entirely agree. I think we need to differentiate here. The word "men's" is too broad (not trying to elicit humor from that). I LOVE to watch college and Olympic hockey. The NHL not so much. Why? Because of what you mentioned. But they are not trying to "cripple themselves for sport" in college hockey and in the Olympics. It's only the NHL (and I suppose the minor leagues, but I don't watch them, either) that promotes that goonery, because apparently they still feel that it draws (and, based by the increase in decibels every time a fight occurs, they're probably right). I stated on this board last week that the women's gold medal game was one of the best games I had ever seen and that I didn't care it if was played by men, women, or chimps. But that doesn't mean that I don't also enjoy watching a great MEN'S game...such as the 2010 Olympic gold medal game. We can get into the reason why the game has become this way, but that's another entire discussion. Personally, I think the "armor" that the players wear has made them feel invincible. Also, the composite sticks that propel the puck at insane speeds (when they are not breaking in half, that is) don't help matters any. But I am willing to bet if you went back to the days of NO face masks you would see a decrease in the violent hits, because a player would know that they're only one hit away from ending their career so they will be less likely to do the same to someone else. Regarding fighting, it's a joke anyway. If you want to see a real fight, watch a fight in a basketball game, where the participants actually have some leverage. The one that comes to mind is when Kermit Washington almost killed Rudy Tomjanovich with one punch (as it is, he basically ended Rudy's career) on December 9, 1977 - one of the most ignominious events in NBA history. Hockey players sliding around and grabbing each others' jerseys while flailing away futilely is just comical.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Just to be clear, THEWIZARD was quoting a column by someone else.

Should that not be made clear when posting/quoting/referencing an article. (USCHO board rules and copyright rules)... or Maybe Tom Powers is THEWIZARD. :D

I have to think that if it did that the US players, out of principle, would have preferred that it didn't. It would have been an absolutely lousy way to win after all their sacrifice and dedication...sort of like receiving a backhanded compliment. Thanks, but no thanks.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I would guess the the low life hiding behind the Wizard title is...... Well never mind. It is not worth it. If you watched the first two minutes of that Overtime. The US was totally taking it to Canada four on four. They almost ended it a few times. Great Goalkeeper. It did not look like anyone was playing scared to me. We are proud of the girls period. This game did not define our program or our girls. As much as you want to paint the ugly picture, the ugliest is right in your mirror. I saw a lot of passion and emotion for a sport that is only growing. I tip my hat too the Canada team. They dug deep to pull that off. We will all be tuned in over the next four years because in the short of it. Without us there is no Canada and without you there is no us. This is a rivalry I really enjoy following. So do us all a favor and find something else to pass your time.

Re: 2014 Sochi Olympic Games Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I guess that will teach THEWIZARD to post an article and not cite who and where article is from........lol........
