Here's the thing about the playoff. Very, very rarely have I ever seen a season where an argument could be made that a fifth team is a legit national title contender. Even a fourth contender is rare.

Furthermore, the more teams in contention, the more you can make the argument that anyone outside looking in had it in their power to do more.

That's because we've all been concentrating on who is in the top 2 and haven't looked beyond the top 3 or 4 for contenders.

I say 16 team playoff. All FBS conference winners get an autobid. The rest at large based on mutually agreed upon mathematical formula. No limits for how many teams a conference can get in.

Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

Nah, I feel we're fairly good at getting the top four teams identified. The rest are good teams. Almost certainly not great. There isn't a good reason to look beyond even the top four or five teams.

If you say 16 teams, you're effectively saying that you agree with the fact that it's better to lose early on the season.

Not all fbs winners are equal. 90% don't belong.

You're saying this a day after unranked Arizona went into Eugene and beat #2 Oregon.

The other conference teams may lose most of the time, but it's better exposure than some minor bowl game on a Wednesday in December that nobody cares about, and it would be worth it for the rare times one of them pulls off an upset and advances. Just might increase parity in college football a bit.

Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

Upsets happen and will continue to happen to the better teams in the nation. In a single game, the gophers COULD beat the Tide. Theoretically.

However, if the Tide are the best team in the nation, they will win more games than anyone else. This becomes more and more true over a long season. If there are a subset of teams that run the table or have one loss against a very high end schedule, they should be considered over a team that loses twice. The team that lost twice is less likely to be the best team in the nation against a similarly difficult schedule.

So currently, we thought Oregon was one of the best. We learned they might not be. By the time the teams have played 10-12 games, these things tend to be discovered. As you progress, you refine your methods.

Why should a one loss team that wins say, the Big Ten, not have a shot at a national title because the rest of the conference is garbage so they're ranked at #5 or #6?

And who doesn't like one off upsets in the playoffs?

Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

**** upsets in the playoffs. There isn't a worse way to find out who the best team is.

Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

Also a one loss team in the Big Ten most likely lost to a ****ty ****ing team compared to a team in the SEC who lost to a crazy good team.

Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

It's why I like the margin-based KRACH to determine the rankings.

Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

The problem is the sports media vultures are convinced in their own correctness. They really do build up their own storm. If this were a balanced environ we'd still have computers involved in the ranking... but that went against the political beliefs (not national politics) of the sports media in regards to what is right and proper.

Instead of reporting and speculating a lot these guys see themselves as the sanctioners and gate-keepers.
Well put. If I were to tweak your comment just a little, maybe I'd describe the media as self-appointed arbiters of football fashion, rather than football politics. But I think we're basically saying the same thing.

The "flavor of the month" could very well be the best team out there. But I'd sure prefer to see them prove it by winning all the necessary battles on the field, as opposed to winning the media's beauty contest.

As for the computers, I believe they're very helpful for ranking the teams once the field is selected. And I gotta believe they're more equitable than the Football Fashion Police. Still, for selection, I'd much prefer to see that kept on the field to the maximum extent possible...

Re: 2014-2015 College Football Thread: A New Era Begins..

ESPN is in full out SEC mode.

Almost every commercial break there is a promo for LSU-Auburn and A&M-otherMSU, yet the only Nebraska-MSU coverage seems to be on banners during games or segues during Sportscenter. You'd think they would advertise the ABC game more, but I guess I should expect it.

On the playoff note: Why do a lot of people argue that 3% of FBS is perfectly fine for a playoff and that anything past that would be dilution? Baseball and basketball let in around 20%, hockey lets in around 27%, and I wouldn't say those are boring playoffs.

Yeah, and it was a lot better when it actually meant something to make the playoffs. You actually had to be, you know, good.
