Holding in the end zone is a safety? Just when I think I'm getting a grasp on football rules things like this happen...

This Bucs team is going to be the death of me. Back to back last minute leads blown away. Defense is playing fine, but the offense is a trainwreck.

Well, you can't very well march off any yardage.

Yep... Always been like that... And one of two penalties that result in points...

Anywhere else it would've been 10 yards / half the distance right? Its just another wacky football corner case.

edit: Not that all sports have wacky corner cases. I could name few from soccer and how to deal with them.

Week 2 viewing maps...

Apparently the CBS station in Orlando apologized for having to carry the Jacksonville game (had a message scroll across the screen). They are obligated to show it there despite the fact that no one in the area wants to watch Jacksonville. But they are considered the secondary market for the Jags when people would much rather be seeing a better game such as the Broncos/Giants game from today. From what I am hearing this is not the first time they have apologized for showing the Jaguars.

This seahawks-niners rivalry should be great for the league over the next 5-10 years

The teams and coaches clearly don't like each other. And when you have dinks like jim harbaugh and dick sherman involved, easy to dislike both teams.

That's not a penalty - just ruled a safety, same as if you knelt in the end zone. Grounding seems like the right answer to me.
It's not just a single penalty that will do it, any illegal block that occurs within the end zone will create a safety - leg whipping, illegal chop block, holding, hands to the face, clipping, and a few more I likely forgot. Then there have to be some non-blocking penalties like you mentioned.

Well there ya go... The one I was thinking of was Intentional Grounding in your own endzone...

That's been that way for years.

It all stems from the age when penalties were stepped off from the spot of the foul. Thus when you held, it was (then) 15 yards from where the hold occurred. Sometimes that led to a 20+ yard penalty. The NFL changed that back after the merger to 10 yards form the line of scrimmage, but never rescinded the safety if the offensive team committed a foul in the end zone.

A hold is also from line of scrimmage only if it occurs behind the line.

Scarlet: Unless you put the two of them in the Super Bowl, it really won't.

Fantastic documentary on Revis' whole injury rehab and the true behind the scenes look on A Football Life tonight on NFL network. Very interesting to see the recovery aspect of an elite athlete coming back from knee reconstruction. Don't know if it will be shown again, but if you can catch it, very well worth the hour.
