2013 NCAA Quarterfinal: Harvard @ Boston College

Re: 2013 NCAA Quarterfinal: Harvard @ Boston College

Being the parent of a goaltender has to be the worst. Either you're miserable because your kid isn't playing, and when they are, watching that can't be good for the nerves either. There's nothing like watching a game standing next to a goalie's mom. It gives one an entirely new perspective. Whenever I read someone claim that a given player is the best defenseman because she has the most points, I remember that goaltender mom saying, "Help her! Help her!" while the opponent was pressuring.

Sorry, this probably doesn't have much to do with BC and Harvard, except that I think the team that helps its goaltender the best will win.

I sat near Lindsey Holdcroft's Mom in December when the Crimson crushed the Green 6-0. The Dartmouth contingent wasn't happy with the officiating that night but in speaking with Lindsey's mom, she was very positive and of course supportive of her daughter. She related how it was for Lindsey growing up being a multi sport athlete and her desire to play D-1 hockey. It is definitely a journey and there are many ups and downs but it seemed to me like Lindsey and her mom have their priorities in order. It was fun talking hockey with her even though her daughter was shelled that night.

Great for her. Was she not the goaler from Pittsburgh that was also into acting or something.?

Well the parent of one of the goalies on our D's team goes stir crazy. If he has had a few beers, you do not want to be around him when things go south for the team. I guess some parents deal with it better than others. I know that a few regular posters, both current and past, are goaler parents.

P.S...Skate79. Due to things like snow storms etc, only been to a game at Harvard once over the years. Next year will be my last year doing the ECAC tour, so once I know the schedule, may be a chance to catch up with you and some of the other Crimson regulars.

Good memory. Yes, indeed, she is the goalie from Pittsburgh although I didn't know she was into acting. Her mom didn't mention it but given Lindsey's wide range of interests, it would not surprise me in the least.

It's unfortunate when parents lose control in situations like you describe here. I've had a chance to meet parents of both the men and women's teams and they have all been wonderful to talk to about their kids' experiences inside and outside of hockey. Even those parents from opposing teams like Dartmouth have been very cordial and we always seem to find a common ground to agree to disagree!

Happy to connect inside or outside of Bright. You know which side of the rink to find me.

The goalie from Pittsburgh who is/was an actor is the back up at Cornell "Kaitlyn Pippy"

Also not wanting to stray too far from the main topic, but I'm compelled to say that this is searingly accurate -- regardless of gender. Years ago I spent a few moments with a goalie mom immediately after her son's team had won a title. I'd break down her emotions this way:

Celebrating The Championship: 10%
Defiance At Her Son's Critics: 10%
Intense But Fully Dignified Pride In Her Son: 30%
Relief That "All The Crap" Was Finally Over: 50%

Being a goalie parent has got to be the toughest job in the stands.

Re: 2013 NCAA Quarterfinal: Harvard @ Boston College

Can't resist straying even further from the topic to tell my favorite hockey parent story.

One of our sons-in-law was towelling off after a business school league national tournament game...needless to say, that's a pretty relaxed hockey experience, one half step up from "beer league" status.A sixty year old woman walks into the locker room carrying a bag of oranges and asking "isn't this the Harvard locker room?" "No, m'am, it isn't," chorus the players, madly reaching for towels, sweaters, anything with which to gird their loins. "oh, sorry, I really should know by now which locker room is his, I've been taking them oranges since he was in peewees," and out she walked....

Maybe there should be a thread that is committed to hockey parents and their trials and tribulations in rooting for and supporting their children. Perhaps it could help in better understanding what the kids go through every year and what it means to the family to be there for them. Just a thought.

Tony Tiger and Rink Rat:

Thanks to you both for tips re getting in to Conte: I think I will try to get there on Saturday. I was a bit worried about an unfamiliar rink but it does not sound too bad.

As to Bellamy, I recall the first came she replaced the ailing Kessler. I forget who they were playing but it was a shutout. She is really an excellent goalie. With Maschmeyey doing so well I wonder if Molly Tissenbaum will get many opportunities. She has only had bits of 2 games so far this year.

I never was a college level hockey parent but 20+ years ago, when my son was little, one of the Harvard women's goalies was my son's 4 days a week babysitter. For 4 years I took my son to all of her home games as she had become a sort of honorary daughter. I always sat behind the goal she defended 2 out of 3 periods. You stay very focused if you follow a goalie. After Harvard she played for the otherwise male doctors team at her hospital in ON except for the 2nd and 3rd trimesters of her pregnancies (she didn't want to set a bad example for her OB patients). Hung it up when she was in her early 40's.

Solid idea. Perhaps "Banquet Season" would be a good time for such reflections. The team banquets themselves often cover that ground...

There definately is handicapped parking on the chestnut hill side of Conte Forum. Instead of going up the stairs if you go into the door on the right I believe there is an elevator there. I know there is an elevator in the lobby so it must go all the way down. You don't have to go into the parking garage. There are HC spaces outside.

It definately goes all the way down, I checked with my daughter.

I think we have another goalie coming in next year so I would expect that Molly won't see much action if at all. Maschmeyer seems poised to assume heavy duty minutes and whoever is coming in will probably share backup minutes with Molly. Or be the primary backup leaving Molly out in the cold so to speak.

Re: 2013 NCAA Quarterfinal: Harvard @ Boston College

Question for this thread. Is there a video feed for Saturday's game? I unfortunately can't make it due to multiple commitments and would like to see the video feed if there is one available. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the link that the bceagles.com website offers for the game on saturday. All the games should be available free online.

Thanks to Lancer for the info!

Should be an exciting game for sure. But I have a sinking feeling the odds are that it will turn out exactly like the recent Beanpot game: incredible speed and defensive tenacity on both sides down to the wire, leading to the team with the greater firepower eventually pulling off a dramatic late-minute score. And I think I know who that team is likelier to be. Just one favor, though: if it turns out that way this year, do it again in regulation, okay? DON'T wait until we're on the power play in the third overtime and go steal a D2D pass? Okay? Thanks!

And unfortunately, when you play an opponent that you respect, both as a university and also its hockey programs, and its fans as well, it deprives you of the fun of posting snarky comments about them! Now if only the NCAA draw had been just a touch different....! (I refer posters from other parts of the country to the stark contrast drawn in TTT's article between BC and its hockey programs and another nearby institution and its men's hockey program.....'nuff said).

Re: 2013 NCAA Quarterfinal: Harvard @ Boston College

Well I guess I don't have to watch the replay of the game. Too bad. I was really hoping the Crimson would pull this one out. In some respects it's disappointing but they got to the quarters so that's something. They really need to add some scoring punch. Especially since we lose Dempsey to graduation.

One thing I forgot to post earlier. A tip of the cap to Elizabeth Parker for volunteering to play D and only seeing limited ice time this year. It had to be hard for her to sit for long stretches without seeing the ice. Consumate team player; she should be recognized for taking one for the team.
