2013 NAHA Labor Day Tourney

Re: 2013 NAHA Labor Day Tourney

OnMAA, to be fair I think you need to take population into account. Ontario's at 13.51 million is 2 1/2 times that of Minnesota's 5.38 million. Seen in this light, for the eight years shown in your table, Ontario has sent just 25% more kids to D1 despite having a population that's 150% greater than Minnesota's.

Good point. That can partly be accounted for by the fact that many bubble D1 prospects from Ontario player would chose to stay in Canada to play CIS, while the equivelent prospect from Minnesota is likely to choose D1.

Best way to compare is the total set of players from each state/province heading to college, D1, D3 and CIS.

No matter how you measure it, Minnesota and Ontario are the two biggest supply pools of Hockey talent, driven by the large number of players at the grass roots level.

I'm wondering if the percentage of players going D1 is proportional to the "grass roots" population in each region. Is the D1 group from Ontario the same proportion as D1's from Minnesota?

Already provided those stats for Ontario in an earlier post.

For completeness here is a link to the OWHA Executive report from last season. A full data set of female hockey registrants in Ontario sliced many different ways can be found within:

Here is the tournament portal.....

Full results and stats posted for every game/division/player. Peruse at your hearts content.

From what I saw the stats are a bit off, don't know how much you can really infer from them. Also with the way pools were set up some really strong teams missed the final 8 and some teams not as strong made it. Mission was the best team I saw, very mature and played consistent the whole way (new colors make them look a bit like a road work crew, guessing they will get sick of the chirps on that). Some key players were missing and the U18s from both USA and Canada were looking a bit run down although saw some amazing flashes from some of them. I think as the year moves on a few of the teams will get back to full strength and at least get close to where Mission was at. Also kind of wish Minnesota would bring a few committed players along there youth really showed at times, would be better for the college coaches if they could see players like Baldwin and Rogers mixed in with the Whitecaps to give a gauge on where the rest are at.

Would be nice if NAHA would make a good way for all teams to end at Cairns, couple coaches I talked to were really having a hard time getting to final games to talk to the players they wanted to, as the were finishing at the UV or Leddy.

The weather was awesome, cant really beat a nice outdoor dinner on church street on a 70 degree night. Burlington has a great food and local brewery scene that is fun to sample, defiantly a great town to get out of the hotel and explore a little.

Agree that Stats are off. A few mistakes on goals, more on assists, shots aren't very accurate/consistent and a few missing scoresheets. Plus, some teams (like ours) rolled and mixed lines throughout the tournament, tried to showcase kids who were not committed and/or were still holding tryouts, others seemed to be pretty set in their lines and play top lines in key situations. So take them for what they are worth.

I do note that the demise of Assabet seems greatly exaggerated on here. They looked pretty darn good to me (in half a game) despite their record. I won't shed any tears if I am wrong though.

Annual ritual - Assabet is dying, yada yada yada - same old, same old. Every year pretty much they are a Semi-Final or better team at Nationals. Since they recruit from out of district (and even country) and are successful at it to date, they will continue to be prolific (until that changes). They were missing Laing at NAHA I believe and that is a goal a game (either scored or created) and she is a good defensive forward as well. As noted elsewhere in the thread, they are going to struggle on D this season - a much weaker group than they traditionally have had and they are bouncing the roster around daily on their website this week trying to figure out what to do about it. They will give up more goals than they usually do - question will be if they can score more than they usually do - they are the queens of the 1-0 and 2-1 win over the past 10 years.
