Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

Replying to RaceBoarder: I'm guessing you'll be able to buy a ticket for quite a bit less on the street, especially if you only need a single. OK, there's a slight risk of getting a fake ticket doing it that way. A portion of the savings is tied to that slight risk. But especially if you're going to spend a period of hours at Gameday, there should be a reasonable chance to familiarize yourself with the market before making a purchase.

We are, however, in somewhat uncharted waters here. As Priceless notes, this a battle between two legitimately undefeated teams, not a longshot upset bid. And maybe those billboards declaring that Northwestern is Chicago's Big Ten Team have been taken to heart. Maybe.

But on the sellers' side, I'm catching a whiff of the Blackhawks secondary market here. On the buyers' side I'm not sure if there's enough demand to support those prices. To be a little more specific, there's a fair amount of inventory on the market. Some of the tickets are available in large blocks. One party is selling 12 tickets @ $195 a pop. He'll sell any number of ducats between 1 and 12 at that price. Another party offers 20 tickets @ $215 each. Again, they'll sell any number between 1 and 20. Those tickets were bought purely for resale. The typical season ticket holder offers 2 or 4 tickets, and usually won't break up the set.

The Blackhawks "investor" will generally get a good return. Will that be the case here? Again, maybe. But if they're counting on Buckeye fans to pay those prices, I'd say it's an open question at best. An OSU alum based in Chicago likely already has tickets. Same thing for a Columbus-based fan planning a road trip. Buckeye Nation isn't in the habit of waiting to see how the early season goes before making the commitment.

Another factor is that Columbus is hosting the President's Cup (USA vs. World in Golf) next weekend. Now for the rank and file Buckeye Football Fan, the golf event won't be attractive enough to affect any football plans. But for the big money fan, it could. I can easily imagine the well-funded fans partaking in the golf Saturday afternoon at Muirfield Village, then just watching the proceedings from Evanston at home on TV.

So the ultimate question for RaceBoarder is whether the casual fan from Chicago is really ready to embrace the NU Wildcats at $200 a ticket. I'd actually be very interested to know. If you go, please report back. But I suspect there's still a bit of wishful thinking in those billboards I've seen on the Tri-State.

You can keep up to date on the price at StubHub
I do see the $120 seats are gone, as are the $195 box seats. At the time of this posting there are 1283 seats available.

Got my info from www.usaseats.com. Their brick and mortar business is located here in the Columbus area, and is known as Tickets Galore.

I'm guessing that some of the tickets being offered are available on multiple websites, though perhaps not all.

FWIW, it appears that the party with 20 tickets has dropped his asking price to $190 each. The group of 12 is still on the market, holding steady at $195.

Thanks for the insight on the Ohio end of things here...

I was going to be doing something with some friends this weekend anyways since my b-day is early next week... We just weren't sure what we were gonna do... This is totally an impulse buy on my end.... As far as prices go, this is going to be hard to gage... I only started following intently after Gameday announced they were coming to town... I know that they were $150 and above from just glancing out of curiosity earlier in the season...

Northwestern used a form of "Dynamic Pricing" for this game that is fairly unique... Basically seats were set at a "buy it now" price (starting at $126)... This price was also the price ceiling... You also could have bid on your seats of choice as well... You weren't guaranteed the ticket at the price you bid, but if the demand wasn't there, you could save some cash that way... FULL EXPLANATION HERE...

My guess is that most people are into end seats for around $90-100 with sidelines going for $150-170... I'm already ahead of you about the whole looking on the streets deal... I figured that would be the best (cheapest) option for us... Goal would be to come in around $50-60/seat, but I have no idea if that's reasonable... We'll just have to see... It's gonna be interesting as it sounds like I will be going on just a few hours of sleep in 48 hours by the end of the game, ha ha...

Dynamic pricing is becoming more customary as teams are realizing how much money can be made on secondary markets. One piece of advice if you really want to go to the game is to check prices the day of the game. I know that on stubhub, the price of Boston Bruins tickets collapses as people hurry to sell their tickets before they become useless pieces of paper. If you have the ability to print out electronic tickets you might be able to snag a last second deal.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

Iowa played the Gophers. If that was a "test", then you're in for a disappointing season when Iowa plays the actual teams of the B1G Mistake.

You realize Iowa was 4-8 last year, and this is supposed to be Minnesota's best team under Kill? I know that isn't saying much, but going on the road, in a rivalry game, and absolutely dominating Minnesota, is a passing a test that they are continuing to improve. I'm not saying this team is a world beater by any means, but they're improving every week, and passed their first B1G test.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

Saw a good chunk of the Iowa-Minnesota game. I grew up rooting for the Gophers, but they just didn't look like they had much to offer. Not a lot of size or athleticism in general. Maybe thing'll come together, but that was not a pretty thing to watch.

They looked terrible. I realize that Iowa is better than the teams they started with, but cripes. No aggression whatsoever.

I think our Offensive line is top 5 in the conference. Scherff is one of the better tackles in the country, and if he stays one more year, he'll be a first rounder. I wasn't too surprised to see them dominate the line if scrimmage.

Defensive line and front seven have been awesome so far, but we haven't truly been tested. Won't be this week either, but they will in Columbus. I thought, since UMN is primarily a power run game, it would be more if a test, and it just wasn't.

I think the power run game pretty much disappeared when Glen Mason left town, whose era seems pretty rosy at this point.

Brewster did promise to do the impossible, he some how found a way to set the Gopher football program back at least 5 years.

That's extremely interesting. Raising prices for premium games has been part of college football for a while. But I've never heard of a school doing something like this. I must say it's creative, seems to fit NU's situation quite well, and yet is reasonably fair to consumers on all sides.

I'm just one data point. But if I had been planning to go to Evanston for this game, I would have investigated the ticket situation long ago and locked in my seats at $126 on the first possible day. I'm guessing a good number of Buckeye fans did just that. The "refund of price reduction" feature seems more geared to local fans. Specifically, NU wants potential supporters to jump in right away, not sit on the sidelines waiting for the price to drop while opposing fans snap up all the tickets. Those coming in from out-of-town aren't going put their whole trip at risk in order to save twenty dollars. The casual local fan just might. The guarantee that you won't overpay in comparison to others partially levels that playing field.

My guess is that most people are into end seats for around $90-100 with sidelines going for $150-170... I'm already ahead of you about the whole looking on the streets deal... Sounds like a reasonable goal. If most single game purchasers paid $126, someone wanting to get quick salvage value for their extras might very well accept 50% of what they paid. Also, I'm sure that face value for season ticket holders is a good bit less, so again $60 might get the job done. But as you know, bagging that price will very likely require expending time and energy working the street. You're not likely to get that number on a first try.

Excellent advice.

The Air Force Academy has been forced to cancel all travel by athletics teams. That means no football game at Navy this weekend.

A prolonged shutdown would also disrupt the Army and Air Force hockey teams as well.

I would assume that all AFA, Army and Navy teams in all sports are having their events postponed until future notice as well, correct?

Air Force-Navy will be decided Thursday at noon per Navy.

Re: 2013 DI BCS Thread: Thorthu Thame ish bacth!

Yep. Today's Navy - Howard soccer game has been canceled.

I'll admit I should do some digging, but if I could ask you guys...what part of the shutdown would mean they couldn't play a soccer game? I really don't understand why 18 guys in a van(s) can't travel an hour to play soccer.

Who pays for the van(s)? Who pays the coach?

It's paid for by the military. They have their budget and the funding source is taking a temporary reduction. It's only smart that the military reduces its expenses whereever it can.
