2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

To those interested in a bit of Union hockey history, the Dutchmen's win over UNH back in the seventies was one of Ned Harkness' classics. With a team of rookies Union beat the then ranked #1 team in the east and #2 nationally. The Harkness legacy of winning at any cost has all but evaporated. In retrospect he was certainly an anomaly at Union. Today's Union teams are a model of excellence in in every respect due to the high standards of Rick Bennett, the antithesis of Ned Harkness. Union is fortunate to have the best coach in the country.

Union is fortunate to have the best coach in the country.
Totally Agree !!!!! Like the team, and the players, a class act. If they gave a Hobey for coaching, my vote would go to Bennett. Humility and hard work.

Get the skinny on UNH ahead of this weekend's games with Union... insight from UNH analyst Pete Webster and reporter Drew Bonifant.

An interesting point Bonifant made was "UNH doesn't have a reliable plan B if they don't score off a rebound from the point or high slot." We are a tough defensive team so I am cautiously optimistic we can hold our own against them. UNH also starts slow so let's take advantage of this and get some early goals. Their 1st line is on a hot streak so shutting them down is another key, which I don't see as a major issue considering we have played several top lines in the nation such as Q's Jones brothers and Anas.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

“This weekend is a big step for our season” said junior forward Matt Willows. “It’s almost like playoff hockey now. It’s coming down to the end here and everything is real tight. ... We dropped a couple of nonconference games that we should have pulled out and I think this is a time for us to redeem ourselves and come away with a couple of wins this weekend.”

Now that is a very confident UNH junior forward.

It appears Ghost will be dressing tonight. He has friends traveling to the game tonight to watch him play. Source: Twitter

A little trivia - Matt Willows played high school hockey for Clarkstown North in New City (Rockland County) New York. Willows holds the New York State High School record for most points and most goals in a season from back in the 2008-09 season:

Vecchione (full-body) didn't make the trip.

Great win, solid team effort. I thought Stevens was excellent tonight. I wouldn't be surprised if Alex gets the start tomorrow since we have conference games the rest of the season.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Huge win for Union against a top 20 team. They grabbed the lead early and kept it. True to form, UNH kicked it up a gear in the third but it wasn't enough. UNH has a +14 goal differential and a +85 shot differential in the third period of games this season, both highs for a period for the Wildcats.

Stevens continues to round into form with a career-high 38 saves, besting the previous career-high of 37 he set just last month. His season save percentage has increased after five straight games and now sits at .922. He appears to be getting more and more comfortable in the starting role as the season goes along.

It's shaping up to be another interesting game tonight.

UNH should be coming out with "guns balzing" tonight.

"It's the biggest weekend of the year," said coach Dick Umile.
"We've got to come back and find a way to win and get the series split," Umile said.

"This loss is pretty disappointing," said senior captain Eric Knodel. "It was a huge game for us. It's a huge weekend for us. Especially coming out so flat in the first period, we tried to emphasize coming out with an edge and getting after them. Getting that first goal was going to be important for us."

Should be a "chipper" game tonight.

Any word on the UNH PLayer that was injured ? Looked like a leg injury ? I hope he is ok.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

BIG, BIG weekend for Union. Though an inconsistent team, UNH posed a high hurdle. The Dutchmen cleared it in preparation for the push through the remainder of the ECAC campaign. Q and Colgate look very formidable, along, of course, with Yale. Does this Union team represent something special? It is very possible that, at full strength and with the stars in the right alignment, the Dutchmen are realistic candidates to play for the national championship.
