Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

So with the Flyers in a shambles and firing their coach 3 games into the season are they desperate enough to wave big dollars in front of Ghost and actually sign him in season?

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

My thoughts on this weekend...... from my vantage point in the stands Union is a fast team that comes at you in waves right to the net, if our opponents don't back check and play great position in all 3 zones we have the advantage. Pontarelli plays defense too, he back checks and can break up a rush creatively. In an interview on previous thread here his junior coach in Cornwall said he was dedicated to being an all around player and it showed this weekend. His youthful enthusiasm is catching too. Henry and Taylor can play , at times I thought Taylor was playing wing , and did seem to use good judgement pinching. They seemed to mirror Ghost and Bodie and even Gingras in not being afraid to take it up ice with confidence ,,for the first week end of games that is a great sign of coaching to play to the teams strengths and to recruit for it too. From the stands it is so great to imagine all the schooling Bodie, Carr, Ghost and the upperclassmen are giving to our rookies. Like last year I haven't noticed any cycling yet so I assume that will come like last year when the lines etc. are more established. Great experience in facing a hard checking team that knows how to forecheck , saw some nice outlet passes and was impressed with the maturity of the team in facing the provocation they threw our way. Any Thoughts fans, let me know.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Each team develops and takes on a character of its own. Union's character has been that of a small, tough, well disciplined "working class" team. When a team is faced with adversity, it can wilt and give up, it can throw in the "towel". Or, players can step up, leaders can emerge and the team, despite being bloodied can say, when their starting goalie is mugged and trampled, "bull**** .... we are not going to take this, we are not going down without a fight" !!! We all saw this, this weekend. We saw great upperclassmen leadership that was reminiscent of two years ago combined with great effort by every player on the team. We all saw glimpses of what might be a very exciting season of Union College Hockey. This has to be tempered because this years non-conference schedule is very tough. We face some of the best teams in the WCHA, NCHC, Big 10 and Hockey East. Some of these teams have rich traditions and storied pasts. Each of these 10 non-conference games is going to be a very tough battle. I am really glad our first 4 non-conference games are at home. The next six will be on the road.

You wonder how hard (if at all) they went after Max Coatta. The brother thing has worked out well for them multiple times in the recent past, and now you see Max Novak's brother being brought in.... though Max won't be on the team by the time Wade Novak arrives in 2016.

I can't remember the last time Union had a commit from a 16 year old.

USHR wrote about Wade last fall - "Interesting player. High skill level. Good skater with a quick set of hands. Our guess is that his name will be one we hear a lot in the coming years."

Union College feeder team Omaha Lancers (2013: Eli Lichtenwald, 2014: Tyler Hynes and Connor Light) have set a 66-year USHL record for consecutive shutouts. They've started the season with five shutouts (previous record for shutouts at any time in season was three). Cole Bruns has been in goal for all games.

Stevens is the only other 16 y.o. commit I can remember. Is risky with young recruits like this, but hopefully he develops like his brother has. Is interesting that U is getting earlier (i.e. younger) commitments in the last 3-4 recruiting cycles. There was a time in the early Leaman years where it seemed like all the commits were 19 or 20 years old, so shows how far things have come and how Union's "brand name" has risen.

As for little Coatta, I'm not worrying about this too much. If he'd chosen another ECAC, that would be different, but for a Minnesota kid going to a nearby Minnesota school where family & friends will be close is a big lure and is hard to fault that decision. Maybe Bennett & company knew that was how he was leaning or maybe academics played a role. Truth is we will likely never know, but would bet that the coaches were in contact with him or were at least following his progress. One thing I'll say is that the coaches seem to be on top of things recruits wise, especially looking at the current class and next year's.

I also heard through the grapevine that he wanted to stay closer to home. I think we sometimes forget how difficult it is for families to sacrifice the ability to see their sons play at the college level.

Any injury report? I know we are hurting but this weekend we have to do better on the penalty kill. The Lakers took two from us last year in a rather convincing fashion.

It will be an interesting weekend to see how everyone continues to develop (as well as to see who plays). Overall the freshman looked really good and will have a major impact. I think I was more impressed by Taylor, and Gonye than most but I think this is a strong class which was very much needed. They are much further ahead this year than last year. I think it's too early to look at opponents records to compare strengths (LSSU played Robert Morris last weekend picked 8th in AHA). That being said I hope to see the team play Union Hockey

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

Agreed that it's too early to start comparing opponents. I'm sure we will have our hands full with LSSU. I am most concerned about the injury situation going forward, particularly with that of Colin Stevens. It will be a lot to expect a freshman to jump right in and take over the duties on a full time basis with little or no time to adjust to the college game. Of course we have to go with who and what we have, so let's see where it takes us.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat?

These Lake Superior games definitely have me nervous, especially with all of the injuries. Union looked lethargic and disjointed and played probably their worst weekend of hockey when they were swept by LSSU last year. LSSU has a pair of outstanding goalies, so goals will likely be at a premium this weekend.

It sounds like Stevens, Roy, Novak, Lichtenwald, and Wilkins are all still out judging from Ken's comments during Slap Schotts. This lineup is going to be awful tough to crack once everyone is healthy, especially at forward. Cruice and Bennett did a great job with their opportunity last weekend and DiPauli looked solid as well. There's going to be a lot of talent in street clothes later this season. I'm also interested to see what Krug and Martin can do as they were the only healthy skaters that did not play last weekend. I think one of those two could end up getting regular minutes before the season is over, especially Martin who was highly regarded by USHR last season.

Is it Friday yet? Let's go U!

Though I'm no expert on teams in the new WCHA, I'm a bit surprised that Lake State is not getting more love in the preseason prognostications. They did graduate two good forwards but have everyone back on defense and are excellent in goal. They have always been solid defensively and these games should be real strong tests of U's offensive potential.

Garnetfan makes a great point about U being a fast team and that the style of the team has changed in the last couple years. The d-corps has a lot of very fast skaters that can handle the puck and step up into the offense, and players like Pontarelli, Vechione, etc. are adding plenty of speed to the lineup. This is looking like a team that can score quickly in transition and could be a little more offensive minded than in the past. To a certain extent, U is a little more like Yale has been in the past few year's with just about every player being an offensive threat. The trick could be to keep the puck out of Union's goal. Looking forward to tonight's game!
