2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

I'm seeing Coach Bennett and the players say that they're in this to win, not just be happy to reach this level. I agree there might have been some sense of "just happy to be here" in Tampa, but this feels different. The players definitely sensed that winning the East Regional was a great accomplishment, but also just the next step towards their goal.

One thing I have noticed more of this year is how there is so much more local media coverage about this team. I don't know if that's because of the #1 ranking in the poll and their accomplishments this year, but I find it hard to go more than a day or so without someone talking about them.

There is more coverage because they are news worthy. Teams in this area don't get to play in national semi-finals very often. Basketball and football are king in this area, but when a team accomplishes as much as union has the past 3 years, people want to year about them. Lots of people jumped on the Union bad wagon the past 2 years so there will be a good contingent in Philly. Enjoy the ride.

BC is great, but they aren't RPI 85 or Maine 93 great. They came within a fluke deflection of losing to Brown. You guys are solid -- you can do this.

while i agree bc isn't maine 93 (obviously) i don't think pointing to one particular game on the schedule or even a few means anything. i am expecting a one goal game in either direction.

Very true and I agree. I guess I meant to say that there seems to be more coverage this year as compared to two years ago when they accomplished the same feats (Cleary and Whitelaw Cups, #1 seed in Bridgeport, and trip to FF). However, the difference is this year, they finished the regular season as the #1 ranked team in the polls...perhaps that woke everyone up and made them realize this team is for real.

I really do hope to see a large Union contingent on Thursday. I'll be in the sea of garnet!

The Boston College Hockey Blog
Q and A With Union Hockey Reporter Ken Schott
http://thebostoncollegehockeyblog.blogspot.com/

"Q-Lastly, you're a Philly native, in terms of food/touring what are places that Eagle fans should be sure to visit".

7) "I can definitely suggest Pat's Steaks and/or Geno's Steaks, which are across the street from one another at South 9th Street and Passyunk Ave. Two other recommendations are Tony Luke’s, which is underneath I-95 at 39 Oregon Ave., and Jim’s Steaks at the corner of 4th and South streets. And don’t forget to get a genuine Philadelphia soft pretzel. And hoagies. And Tastykakes.
Since I left Philly for York College of Pa. in 1981, a lot has changed in downtown Philly. I'm not sure what the best places are. I'm usually hanging out at places where I grew up in Northeast Philadelphia."

"Thanks to Ken for taking the time to answer my questions."

Of course. I'm just saying don't turn them into the Winter Warlock. They're good, but they're not unbeatable.

Are people concerned that Stevens will leave after the season? I know many teams have been keeping an eye on him. Will definitely have the chance to bolt

I've thought about that a little bit, and it wouldn't shock me if some team woos him away with how high his stock is right now. It may not be higher next year. But at the same time, he doesn't have as much experience as Kinkaid or Grosenick did when they left early. Kinkaid had ~3700 minutes in college before he left. Grosenick had ~4000. Stevens is at ~3000.

It will be something to monitor.

2014 Frozen Four Preview: Team Capsules
By Jeff Cox

"And that's essentially the key to cracking Boston College: limiting (not shutting down) the top line. When Notre Dame beat the Eagles in a best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series, the line was held to one five-on-five goal for the weekend."

"Outside of Gostisbehere and Carr, Union doesn't have the high-end and well-known super stars that Boston College and Minnesota do, but it could be argued that from top-to-bottom, the Dutchmen are more talented than any other team in the field."

Great picture of Union forward Matt Hatch "letting 'er rip" in front of "Union College"

Schenectady applauds Union hockey team

Looks like the City is turning out in support for this one.

"Schenectady community leaders unveiled a sign Monday on a walkway over Erie Boulevard in Schenectady in support of the Union College men's hockey team. Union will compete in the NCAA Frozen Four in Philadelphia, with the puck drop against Boston College at 5 p.m. Thursday."

Bennett looks good without any hair. Looks like the AD got his head shaved as well.
