Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

We got a first place vote !!!! Never seen that before.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

According to Ryan Fay at Union Hockey Blog...

"There was at least one other time I can think of [where Union got a 1st place vote]. Union got one 1st place vote while being ranked 8th in the October 15, 2012 poll."

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

From Josh Seguin at College Hockey News:

@JoshSeguin24: Want to see how important the new bonus system is? Go to the @chnews pairwise, go to change criteria. Change Union's losses to LSSU to wins. Obviously you can't do that in real life, but what you will find is that Union would be first in the Pairwise and QU would move up markedly

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

According to Mike McMahon at College Hockey News and http://www.playoffstatus.com/ncaahockey/ncaahockeytournseedprob.html - BC, Minnesota and Union have locked up No. 1 seeds in the National Tournament.

Based on assumed results of future games. A little work still needs to be done. Gostisbehere #6 nhl college prospect.

USHR ‏@USHRhockey 1h

5-11/180 lb. Nobles Sr. D JC Brassard has committed to Union (for fall '15). Late '95 led all prep D in scoring w/ 11-32-43 line in 27 gp.

More on the Brassard pickup, looks like he'll fit right into the system.

This assumes that - "All future unplayed games are assumed won/lost with a probability based upon relative team strengths." That relative play never seems to happen anywhere this time of year.

On a separate note, because we played playoff hockey last weekend we really helped ourselves. We got a little separation from #4 -#9.

Depressing that there are only 3 ECAC teams up there. Here is hoping HE stumbles and we end up with 4-5 ECAC teams in the Tournament.

Nobles is an academic elite prep school (Independent School League) just outside of Boston in Dedham, Ma. In addition to playing hockey, you can bet he is very smart.

I don't know who we will face next week. One possibility is Dartmouth, if they get by RPI

Some Facts:

1. The 10 best save percentages away from home this season:
Best Save Percentage, Road & Neutral Games - See more at: http://collegehockeyinc.com/articles/stat-pack-road-stoppers#sthash.v68Z1OYQ.dpuf
.946 - Charles Grant, Dartmouth
.945 - Thatcher Demko, Boston College
.943 - Jesse Wilkins, Bemidji State
.942 - Clay Witt, Northeastern
.942 - Kevin Kapalka, LSSU
.942 - Connor Hellebuyck, UMass Lowell
.940 - Jimmy Sarejeant, Mercyhurst
.935 - Robby Nichols, Connecticut
.934 - Lukas Hafner, Western Michigan
.933 - Colin Stevens, Union
2. Record
Since February 1, 5-2-1 With Grant in the goal 4-1-1
3. Scoring
Since February 1, 2.625/1.750 With Grant in the goal 2.667/1.333
4. Road Record
Season 5-7-1, Since February 1, 3-1
5. OOC Record
Dartmouth took on some of the best of HE: Providence, Northeastern, Vermont, New Hampshire, Boston University and finished 1-2-2

Back on December 11, we won 3-2 but some felt they outplayed us and outshot us and outskated us. In looking back it turns out that Grant was in the goal then too.

RPI usually does well against Dartmouth and won both but in the second win 4-2, Grant was not in the goal. He will be this weekend. We will see.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Union losing will help. :)

Not for a while it won't. The best use of Union is to have their RPICH pull in a bubble team.

But I don't see any way to get 5 in. Figure the current 3 plus a darkhorse champ. That leaves a bubble team to sneak in to the top 14 (16 minus Mercyhurst and the ECAC darkhorse auto; hopefully no other surprises in the other conference tournaments). Colgate is the best chance but since Colgate can't play Union til the final, they would need to get enough points out of say knocking off Q in the SF. If they in turn then lost to say Yale in the final they might just get knocked right back out.

Yale is the only other possible bubble team to somehow sneak across the line but they probably can't without winning it all and thus doubling as the auto bid, knocking us back to 4. I'm trying to come up with a way for Yale to beat 'Gate in the final with Cornell and 'Gate still remaining above the line, but I'm not seeing it. Gotta figure Gate would need to beat Q in the SF to build RPICH, but for that to happen Union would need to be at Placid and Cornell would have to sustain 2 QF losses to Yale, which would hose them. I guess a collapse by the other mid-teen PWR teams could make it happen.

Lots of ways to get 4 in: any darkhorse champion as long as Cornell manages to sneak in without the auto (and Q, but I assume they're safe) -- safest would be the top 4 in Placid, 'Gate beating Cornell in the final.

Definitely. Losing in the quarters to the #8 or lower team won't help that team get in, but losing to the #4 or #5 (perhaps 6) in the semis would help that team.

Looks like when Ghost linesup against Ryan Callahan next year :( it will be against Tampa Bay. Welcome the NYR MSL! Sorry for the digression.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Congratulations to Champ!

Daniel is one of the brightest examples of the player development that goes on at Union under this coaching staff. He had one of the ugliest skating strides in the league when he first came to Union and that really held his game back. You could tell he always had the offensive skills to be a scorer in this league, but he didn't have the skating ability to match. Daniel's put in the hard work to improve his skating, and his overall game has improved tremendously. I can't think of a player more deserving of this award.
