Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

How time flies. Seems like yesterday were were squaring off against Bowling Green. Of the 59 teams that play D1 College hockey, the season will end this weekend for at least 10 and probably 11 of them. Another half of the remaining 50 or so teams teams will conclude on March 16 leaving about 25. On March 22 we should know the six confernce tournament champs and the 16 NCAA contestants. Its been an unbelievebale run for us Union fans these past 4 years and as they say " ... it ain't over yet !!!"

This has also been an extremely tough and competive year in the ECAC. In 50 matchups with HE for 2013-2014 our Inter-Conference Record has been 22-20-8 and I am sure that will play out further. I wonder if, going forward, the ECAC can sustain this level of competitive play? We will have to see. Best enjoy it while we can .....

The ECAC has 12 of the 59 NCAA D1 Mens Hockey Teams or 20% in total.

The ECAC has 20% (2) of the top 10 teams
The ECAC has 25% (5) of the top 20 teams
The ECAC has 25% (8) of the top 32 teams
The ECAC has 25% (10) of the top 40 teams

Its been a very good year.

I think with teams like Quinnipiac (top of the line facilities and feeding the program money), Union (Great coach with Rick Bennett), Yale (Great coach will Keith Allain and a backing of the school), Cornell (tradition of always being good) and even Colgate (due to new rink in a few years) the ECAC will remain strong.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Will Rick Bennett be ECAC Coach of the Year or will TU Gate dictate otherwise?

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

I say its 50/50 but it wouldn't be TU Gate as much as Colgate.

Yup. I'd say it's between Bennett and Don Vaughan with an outside shot at Casey Jones because everyone picked Clarkson to finish last.

I say it's 90/10 for Vaughn. Union had a great year but they were supposed to have a great year. Colgate had a great year but were supposed to be horrible.

I would take slight issue with your statement that Union was supposed to have a great year. I think the preseason polls had Union as third or fourth, Colgate more middle of the pack, but I do agree that Vaughn did a great job and is also a good coach.

Yeah, I think Union was 4th in the media poll and tied for 3rd in the coaches poll. No one expected them to finish in 1st by 8 points.

Well, I picked them high. :)

Union definitely exceeded, and there is precedent -- Schafer won back to back in 2002 and 2003, the latter year because even though Cornell was supposed to be good nobody expected them to wind up #1 overall in RPICH. Union has a similar profile this year, and I think that if nobody had far exceeded expectations then Bennett would have a shot. But somebody did far exceed. Jones also had a shot until Clarkson faded towards the end.

Union will definitely get its share of ECAC awards, however.

Could be. I don't think Union was predicted to have as great of a year, being picked, I believe 4th by the coaches and media. Colgate did exceed expections by a wider margin though being predicted 9th in both.

We've been improving across the conference for a while, and it helps us (though it hurts the NCAA overall) that the factory schools out west have been gutted by continually losing their top targets to the juniors.

The ECAC will always have systemic disadvantages (higher admission requirements, smaller media footprint, no natural in-state conveyer belts) but I'm pleasantly surprised how we've righted the conference over the last decade. I'm even more hopeful since it's happened during a time when two of the traditional conference powers (Clarkson and Harvard) have been in the toilet -- something which will not last.

Union's commitment to being competitive has been an important part of that -- good job, Dutchmen! My heartfelt support to all the ECAC reps' repeating last season's success and winning NCAA games.

I believe you are correct. I also remember the media using the "t" word (transition year) early in the season when interviewing Bodie and Bennett.

We may be facing Dartmouth in the next round. Interesting pickup from their site:
Four instances in program history have seen Dartmouth fall in the first contest of a series only to come back and win the next two. The Big Green accomplished the feat in 2003 (vs. Colgate), 2004 (vs. RPI), 2011 (vs. Harvard) and 2013 (vs. Harvard). I wonder if they are going to do it again?

Dartmouth will be a very difficult opponent (as will St. Lawrence).

I have been listening to the audio feed from Dartmouth.

The Dartmouth Announcers, after listening to the RPI fans cheer, have identified them as wannabe Cornell fans, (every cheer is limited to "you suck"). They have given the acronym RPI a new meaning "Really Poor Imitation" :)

It will be either SLU, Dartmouth, or Princeton coming to Schenectady next weekend. I can see Clarkson finishing off Princeton and Dartmouth beating RPI, but I wouldn't put a penny on either.

I'm wondering what RPI's stats are in that regard? I'm thinking it would be first time long time.

Isn't that adorable? Thanks for letting me know to never listen to the Dartmouth audio feed ever, due to a lack of professionalism. We actually have a whole plethora of cheers besides "you suck", so they clearly weren't listening carefully. Why is every post of yours centered around RPI in some fashion?

Check the last sentence of this recap of the Yale game at RPI last month, even the Yale Publicity guy thinks the " suck" chant is overdone. http://www.yalebulldogs.com/sports/m-hockey/2013-14/releases/20140207zvud49

Thanks LTsatch: I was looking for that

"BULLDOG BITES: Tommy Fallen's two-goal night gives him 17 career tallies, which is fifth on the Yale career list for blueliners... The only change from last Saturday's lineup was Mike Doherty in for Dan O'Keefe at forward… Saturday's game at Union can be seen on Time Warner Cable in New York and through the Union website (click link on Yale schedule)… The fans at Houston Field House tonight may have established a new collegiate record for saying the word "suck" in a variety of chants.

Oh, I definitely don't disagree that it's overdone, but we do have a lot of other cheers that we use. My theory is that we are too busy watching the game in front of us to care about how cute our jeers are :P

I've also been to games at other rinks in the ECAC... and most fanbases say nothing and have essentially zero energy, from my own personal experience.
