Ben is a smart kid - honor roll student in a demanding private high school. He is a great skater with good vision and instincts. He is not very big and I don't expect him to get too much bigger, his family is not big. My kid shadowed Ben two years ago before deciding to go to BSM himself and has skated with him in summer training for two summers.
Thank you for this insight. How do you see his skills translating to the D1 level?

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

I'm seeing some conflicting info...is Saturday's game at Brown at 4:00 or 7:00?

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Collin Stevens, all I can say is wow. Brick wall!!
49 saves and a bunch of the spectacular variety. Sak time tomorrow? Not our best effort by any means, but understandable under the circumstances. Taking down defending national champs in their building not to be overlooked.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Those 49 saves were a career high and the most for a Union goalie in a regular season game since Corey Milan had 50 in a 5-2 loss at Massachusetts on 11/25/07.

Some other guys had good games, like Sam Coatta, but Stevens stole that win for Union tonight.

I could see Sak getting the nod tomorrow. Stevens has started 16 straight games, and obviously had a heavy workload tonight. It's a good time to give him a breather, especially with a 4 PM game tomorrow.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

The hockey gods were smiling on Union tonight.. I don't know how you give up almost 50 shots and win, let alone get a shutout. Yale had breakaways and didn't even get shots on net.. no way to totally explain it, though Stevens was fantastic.

And with tonight's results U's playoff opponent will be one of:

Brown
Dartmouth
SLU
Harvard
Princeton

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Very nice effort tonight...It's nice to see RB keeping the boys' focus on the horizon...A lot of them remember the effect that last year's NCAA scheduling had based on seeds and will understand how important it is to get the best seed possible for the NCAA's...

I was lurking on Without a Peer's (WaP) Twitter feed today like I do with a lot of other team's media accounts since I like to read what other folks have to say about both Union and the ECAC in general...I have to lurk with WaP since they blocked me early last year... ;)

There was a discussion about state by state MVP's and the discussion centered over who was the MVP that came from Florida: Will from Northeastern or Ghost from Union.
WaP seemed to feel that Ghost was the better pick...Now, normally, the folks at WaP have permanent cherry and white contacts fused to their skulls and they Union-bash with the best of them, so I was surprised to see them back Ghost in the discussion...However, a few tweets later, the other shoe dropped when WaP asserted that Union is a much different team without Ghost...In fact, they then doubled down on that comment by claiming that' "RPI sweeps Union this year without Ghost".

I expected this kind of comment from WaP...However, I felt that the fine folks on this thread should have a go at both the comments and the MVP discussion...Is Ghost the MVP this year or is it someone else??? Stevens definitely should be in the discussion as well as Bodie and Carr...

As the "HVCC" RB would say, discuss... ;)

I hope the boys finish up strong tomorrow and the week off gives the skating-wounded some time to heal...

Keith.

Not Union's best game so far, but you can't complain about a win over a ranked team. Yale seemed snakebit at times and Stevens came up huge tonight when he needed to. The win also goes a long ways towards avoiding Union's NCAA doomsday scenario where Yale makes Bridgeport as a 4 seed and Union gets shipped to Cincinnati. Yale now likely needs to win the ECAC tournament to receive an NCAA bid as they are down to 21st in the Pairwise after tonight's loss.

In more ways than you can imagine.

BOTH Ferris and St. Cloud LOST. While Ferris is still tied with us at 55 in the pairwise, we are beginning to separate a little from them in the RPI. St. Cloud dropped like a lead-balloon. North Dakota and Wisconsin are coming on like "gang busters !!!" Things are getting ugly. 4 - 9 are all bunched together with only a few hundreds of a point separating them. If we can hold on to this slight separation with a win this afternoon AND take out our first round opponent in the next round in two, we might have that 1st seed locked up before Lake Placid. RB was right. These last two were/are critical to any NCAA ambitions. We played to win yesterday. We need to play to win today. Colin Stevens looked like a man enraged, on fire, not someone who needs rest.

Wisconsin 5593
UML 5577
St. Cloud 5561
QU 5555
Fighting Sioux 5543

We need this win tonight if we want to stay in contention for a first seed. This is a tournament game for us.

We have not beated Brown in their barn since the Woolly Mammoth roamed North America !!! Get Mad

Lets go Dutchmen ... lets finish this thing !!!!

In combat you have to funtion with little sleep, food, or water and still kill your enemy in hand to hand combat. You have to fight even when you are wounded, bleeding and badly brused and broken, cold and wet. There is no time out or rest period. Its kill or be killed. In combat you have to function as a team. Someone has to throw themselves on the barbed wire so the next soldier can run over them to move forward. All this takes GUTS. WE HAVE GUTS !!!

He certainly looked enraged that last couple of minutes! On fire at the right time of the season! Great atmosphere last night.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

I don't think Bennett will start Alex with a #1 seed on the line, that's a lot of pressure to put on a cold, freshman goalie who hasn't seen playing time since St. Cloud State. Stevens can rest next weekend. I think we all remember last year defeating BC and then playing Q less than 24 hours later (I believe). The most favorable path to the frozen four is having that #1 seed and this is where our leaders need to step up today.

It was great being able to see that game in person last night. We were not at our best, but it was a hard-fought, gritty win. Great performance by Collin Stevens. He was a brick wall in net.

Hitting the road to head to Providence! (After I grab a few slices of pizza from Pepe's and Sally's).

95 D JC Brassard (Nobles) commits to Union. Another Bulldog to the ECAC, puck-moving defenseman was our #55 uncommitted prospect.
