2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Yes, especially if they were to be upset in the QF. That's not going to happen, but in the alternative universe where it does it would really hurt.

I'd say Union would be a lock for a #1 seed if they reach Lake Placid and lose in either the semi-finals or finals.

I think you're likely correct. The only bad scenario would be them losing one game in the QF and then again in the SF to dark horses (say, Princeton and Dartmouth). And even then, the other highly-ranked teams are going to be playing relatively weak opponents in their early conference rounds and won't have much chance to move up.

There is probably a perfect storm scenario where the other conferences have their 2s beat their 1s in their finals, but those odds get long fast.

at the end of the day, who cares...
focus on this team and go for it. only get so many chances to have this type of ranking

if he stays next year, great. if not, he was a great surprise and wish him will. You know the coach will give him good advice.

Dan Carr will play in the nhl, count on that.

I hope you are right about DC. I thought when Welsh left he would struggle. He got better and better.

I like Carr better than Jooris, so in my opinion, I would expect Carr to be in the AHL/NHL next year.

Perhaps it was bad timing on my part, posting this article hours before game time, but what are your opinions on Ghost leaving or staying next year based off of evidence from this article?

I think the Flyers have an interesting decision here. Not much of a market for 5'11" 170lb defenseman in the NHL. The AHL is rugged and eventually they need to find out his physical threshold. He is yet to turn 21. Do they have a better chance of turning him into a Torey Krug type player by having another year in college with a strengthening program or going into the AHL and playing a ton of games?

Krug left Michigan State after his junior year and a season later was playing in the playoffs for the Bruins. I'd say with how bad the Flyers D is there is a solid chance they get him this season.

+1
Carr never gives up, it's why he gets so many chances. Not to mention he has a good global vision of the game. And a very decent slap shot. And skill.

Nice article on Champ by the resident Flyers fan at the Gazette.. http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2014/feb/25/0225_unionciampini/ Really is amazing how improved he has been this season and obviously a lot has to do with the hard work behind the scenes and in the offseason. He was a real ugly skater his first year, but just seems a step quicker this season and things are opening up for him offensively. Its one of the strengths of the program that this happens quite often.

..and speaking of the Flyers, my 2-cents on Ghost is that it will be up to Philly to make him an offer or not - essentially telling him that they think he's ready for a step up to AHL/NHL. Earlier in the season I was 100% convinced he would be gone, but now I'd put that at 70-80%. The decision could come down to whether they think he is big enough to step up now or would be better waiting another season & working out at Union. There aren't many players in the bigs that are less than 190#, let alone Ghost's 170#. Evan Krug, who is shorter at 5-9, is 175-180. Philly has a reference point in Kimmo Timonen who is only 5-10, but is over 190# so I would guess they will make an informed decision. Would be fantastic to see him back next year, but bigger things still to do this season.

I have my doubts that he's actually as big as he is listed. If he were to stay another year and get bigger and have a great season, couldn't he essentially be a free agent after Philly's rights expire? I'm not sure how that works.

Flyers would have 30 days after Ghost graduated to sign him (sometime in July) or else he would become a FA. If he had a big season, I'm sure they would put on a full court press and make sure they did that and Ghost said that $$ wouldn't be an issue. Reportedly Ghost gained 10lbs in the offseason to reach 170#, but given the grind of the season would bet he is less than that now. I agree that his size could be a real reason to stay another season, as I would think ideally they would want him up around 180-190 for his own safety/injury prevention. If that happens would obviously be to U's great glee!!

As an aside, BC has made this kind of scenario a staple for recruiting blue-chippers; find small very skilled players that the NHL will be reluctant to sign right away so you have them for 3-4 seasons.. Johnny Hockey being the latest example.

Looks like all the slightly different ways folks have been calculating the new pairwise has coalesced around the way College Hockey News does it.

Meanwhile, just to clear up any lingering confusion, it appears as though all the other major sites that publish a Pairwise, have moved their calculations to be in line with ours. As we said from the beginning, we believe ours is the correct representation of the formulation that the Committee will use on selection day, and with everyone in line, there should be no more confusion over it.

http://www.collegehockeynews.com/news/2014/02/25_bracket_abcs_late_regular.php

We have to look at this weekend as the start of the NCAA tournament and while we are not playing any of the four teams competing for the remaining two #1 seed slots, its like a mini-tournament of its own. Got to have our Tournament face on. For us, the NCAA Tournament starts this weekend against Yale.

3-6. Union / Ferris State / St. Cloud State / Wisconsin

Union and Ferris State have limited ability to move up, but could certainly slip down and out of a top seed. Ferris has a low Quality Win Bonus, and because of its schedule the rest of the way, really needs to win out, or close, just to maintain its spot as a top seed in Cincinnati's Regional. For Union, going 0-2 against Lake Superior State is holding it down in comparison to nearby teams, though the Dutchmen do get a boost from other strong wins and a good RPI overall, not to mention its head-to-head win over St. Cloud. Without any head-to-head games against Ferris State by any nearby teams, it's all going to come down to RPI. But Ferris' RPI can be more volatile because it's playing teams that are low in RPI. A couple losses and it could provide enough swing, so long as St. Cloud and Wisconsin are playing well. The big disparity in Wisconsin's home/road record is holding down its RPI, because of the way things are now weighted. It would have a much better chance of a top seed with some more road wins, but it won't get much chance at that.

I like the way College Hockey News seeds the tournament. It follows the supposed rules and lets the "chips fall where they may". USCHO always has that last "attendance adjustment" that always (IMO) screws the ECAC and the West and helps HE.

It looks like this week's PWR is a pretty solid tournament predictor. The committee would certainly swap Northeastern with someone to avoid the first round matchup with UML, but USCHO would question whether or not to take North Dakota out of St. Paul for attendance purposes. That's a tough call if you're worried about attendance.

Over The Boards ‏@OTBPuckWatch 2m
97 D Ben Newhouse (BSM) commits to Union, per @CHeisenberg. 5'8 puck-moving defenseman was our #54 uncommitted prospect.

Another recruit for the Dutchmen.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Looks like a good get. 5'8 is on the small side for a defenseman, but Union has had success with small puck-moving defenseman recently. He looks to be highly regarded for his age group as he was invited to the National Team Development Program Evaluation Camp last March.

Like the hair too .. 33 points in 24 games is pretty good and should keep the string of quick skating d-men going. I would expect him to do at least a year of juniors (hopefully USHL) before coming to U. Nice get!!
