Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Thanks, gonna shoot up Saturday to knock your rink off my list. Who is the Union or RPI guy that has a pub nearby? Need a place to grab a quick meal before the game.

Some other thoughts ....

The Bier Abbey is close to the campus .... but on the wrong side, away from Achilles. Good Beer
613 Union Street, Schenectady, NY

The student favorite was a very small dump with the best roast beef sandwiches ever made and the cheapest. I believe they are now closed.

Stoney's Irish Grill & Rookies Sports Bar & Grill would be very close to the parking lot and rink. Don't have any experience.

johnk, an RPI fan. This is the place: http://katieobyrnespub.com/.

Thanks Ralph. LT stop in and say hi. We are about a 2 minute Drive to Union. Plenty of college hockey shown on the big screens. Ask for JK as my partners name is also John and he goes by JP. We have alot of Union fans in before and after games along with many players and their families. I actually am of the rare breed and pull for both CD teams to do well so I don't get caught up in the RPI/Union feud. The people involved with both programs are class individuals from staff to players to fans.

Highly recommend Katie O'Byrnes. A lot of Union folks go there.

Brown and Yale are no patsies

Two years ago, when we made it to the F-4, the only team to sweep us (and beat us convinceingly) was Brown and that year they were ranked dead last. Brown always saves their best hockey for us. The last time I checked Yale was the defending national champs and has, what our coach identified early last year, as the "best transition game in college hockey." Boy was he proven correct. You can rest assure that no one is considering Brown or Yale as patsies. As a matter of fact, this matchup, which will get repeated the last weekend of the season, is of monumental importance to us. I just hope we will be at full strength.

You can pump up these teams however you want, but their records speak for themselves. Union needs to take 4 points here - bottom line. A Top 5 team nationally should do that - regardless of how hard fought the games might be.

Bottom line is I think for Union to take the ECAC over Q-pac they can afford only 1 more loss. 2 losses wont cut it.

Bier Abbey is a nice, upscale place with lots of craft beers from around the country. Food is good, but a bit high.
Katie O's is still the best place. Sports, including available college hockey, on all the numerous TV's, lots of choices of beer on tap and good solid food at reasonable prices.

Agreed, but this is the ECAC. I've watched this league for about 25 years and if there's one thing you can say about it...it's by far the most competitive league from top to bottom. Just look at Colgate's run in 2011 - a #12 seed beating the #5 and #1 on their way to the semis. On any given weekend, if you're not playing your best, you can get beat by anyone.

Bottom line is I think for Union to take the ECAC over Q-pac they can afford only 1 more loss. 2 losses wont cut it.

Probably so, but Q's schedule has them playing Clarkson twice, traveling to Cornell/Colgate, and one more against Yale. None of those are easy. Union has Yale twice, travel to Cornell/Colgate, and Clarkson once at home. By the end of the night on March 1st, all of these teams could easily have beaten up on each other enough to make this race a barnburner. I'm not putting my money on anyone just yet.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Every league is competitive - just look at the firepower (off ice) behind the teams in the Big 10 - they have a lot riding on their success. I understand the parity but in the end Union and Q-pac are the best teams and should separate themselves. These two teams measure themselves on a national level - not by ECAC competition. I like that the ECAC is getting better, but Union still should win it.

I don't think these teams need pumping up. Brown has tied Denver, tied (and totally outplayed) Boston College and beat Yale. Yale has defeated Colgate 4-1 and 5-2 and if you remember Colgate kicked our ***. Also, some folks believe that Yale has more talent than last year. There are 5 ECAC teams that are separated by one weekend and that does not include Brown or Yale and as you can see from http://www.uscho.com/ecac-blog/2014/02/02/stratification-begins-in-ecac-hockey/ we have the toughest schedule of the five going forward

Union: Four road, four home; opponents’ record: 53-45-16 (.535)
Quinnipiac: Four road, four home; opponents’ record: 53-46-15 (.531)
Cornell: Four home, three road; opponents’ record: 43-47-11 (.480)
Colgate: Five home, two road; opponents’ record: 42-45-14 (.485)
Clarkson: Four road, four home; opponents’ record: 46-55-13 (.461)

IMO You can throw out all the records to date.

First things first. We need to first secure a first round bye and we are a long way away from that certitude. The path to get there is through one very tough Brown team on Friday. One more mountain to climb.

P.S. I also would not assume that QU does not "run the table".

Cole Ikkala and Eli Lichtenwald are both day-to-day with lower-body injuries.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

There was a fluffy interview of Mat Bodie in the TU today. The only thing I learned from it is that he has two different colored eyes. I didn't bother with the link but I'm sure it can be readily accessed. Probably not worth it.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Right, this weekend should be a couple "in the bag" wins.. last we saw Brown was in the ECAC championship game and Yale is just the defending NC with most of their team back. Sounds pretty easy to me .

The Brown game, as usual, worries me. Their game plan will be a lot like RPI's - hit early, hit late, and hit in between as hard you can. Union's new found grit in the last half up in Potsdam will be put to the test. Being at full strength would be nice, but concern with Eli and Ikky possibly being out, as they are good to have in physical games. Yale I am hoping will be a whale of a game and another good measuring stick to see where this team is really at. I'm still not sure exactly what kind of team U is and this weekend will test both the physical/grind it out style and a more skating/puck possession style. I do think that Stevens has been nothing short of phenomenal over the past month or 2 and is giving U a chance to win every night. Will need more of that this weekend I'm sure.

Dutchman does a great analysis of the remaining teams in the hunt for a top 4, except should really include Yale, as it would not take much for them to get back in it. Statistically, 28 points in the league almost always gets a top 4, which is only 6 points away for U, but I'm making no assumptions as to how easy that will be to achieve. Will be good to have Bodie back and get the D-pairs back in alignment.. but now the concern is the PP, which is really puzzling, but hopefully will be helped by Bodie's return too.

Gate and Cornell play Q-Pac away, not home.+

Thanks - I stand corrected. That may help Q with those games being played in Hamden, but it's still not like anything is easy in this league.

Re: 2013-2014 Union Dutchmen - Can U Three Peat? (Part II)

Acting head coach Joe Dumais said before today's practice that Eli Lichtenwald (lower-body) should be "good to go this weekend."

Dumais said Cole Ikkala (lower-body) will be more of a game-time decision.

Great news on Eli and hoping to see Cole dressing as well, kid is warrior who is willing to sacrifice his body for the team.
