2013-2014 D1 Commitments

Re: 2013-2014 D1 Commitments

Flygh's recruiting Phoebe Staenz to Yale should pay strong dividends. Her energy can be a game changer.

Quite impressed with her during the game vs Canada at the World's last month.

Awesome player. Yale has almost nowhere to go but up. Last year's and this year's (Staenz and Marchin specifically) recruiting class will definitely help them improve (and the following years as well although I'm not as impressed by that one as announced to date). But still a long haul for them - have to become competitive regularly before you can be taken seriously.

Prior to the arrival of Howe, Clarkson had two American Goalies, one of whom was the 1st stringer for several years.

Still, a surprise - given that they have exactly 1 player on the 12-13 team (goaltender) that is an American.

More interesting considering that most starting goalies in the league (ECAC) are Canucks. That has been a trend for many years in the ECAC.

Hux - are you going to fill in list with the remaining players that have been listed since your last update in early April?

Re: 2013-2014 D1 Commitments

Two players who will make an immediate impact.

Make that three. Yale's recruiting class also include the PWHL's scoring champion, Krista Yip-Chuck, who was also on the team representing Ontario that won the U18 National Championship.

Hard to believe Minnesota, the state of hockey, only has 3 goalies going D 1. I would think there should be more. Why the lack of interest in goalies from Minnesota?

Makes me wonder if the reduced number of players at the position compared to skaters could result in more pronounced swings in talent from one class to the next, also compared to forwards and defensemen. That, and or the more limited roster spots available in a particular recruiting year as well. Seems like it's a hard job to get for those reasons

Anyone ever documented swings in the number of goalies recruited overall through successive classes?

The data is avaiable to look at from MN and National complete class data. I think each year only 2-4 MN goalies go D1 on average each year. Is that talent or opportunity or desire to go D3 and play more? There have not been many lights out MN goalies in recent history. The Canadian goalies seem to win out (that would be a stat to look at for last season).

In 2009 HS class that just graduated only Bellemy at Harvard from Duluth who was best goalie in US and Havel from Grand Rapids at BSU (not sure if she has another year via redshirt or graduated) owned the net.

In the HS class of 2010 - 4 from MN went D1. Going into senior year only Billideau from Hopkins has stuck and become number 1 goalie and one of the best in the Nation at #8. Rochester grad Michelle Bonapace-Potvin has redshirted and appeared in 4 games at UND.

For 2011 Shelby Amsley-Benzie from Warroad is starting at UND, Julie Friend from Minnetonka is at SCSU and Chelesea Laden has been a back up at Quinnipaic.
