2013-2014 D1 Commitments

Re: 2013-2014 D1 Commitments

Check the PWHL stats of a few listed above, they are far from scoring machines. Will be even tougher as the game picks up a notch or two as you say. Coaches committing to early or not doing their research.

In my experience, stats at best very inconsistent. While refs usually (but not always) get the goal scorer correct, who gets credit for an assist is anyone's guess. When asked by refs, some girls give the ref their number no matter what, the goalie's number (my daughter's favorite) or the number of a kid who is injured or not playing, etc. When they don't ask, the refs are right on assists about 1/3 of the time especially on the elusive 2nd assist (just ask any defenseman). I can't tell you how many times the ref says a goal was unassisted when there clearly were one or two good assits. Throw in other factors like the manager "correcting" a scoresheet or making a "mistake" inputting it into the system and you have almost no reliability. Plus, some teams keep track of their own stats (i.e., the teams where almost every goal has 2 assists). Comparing those stats to the assists on a scoresheet, kept at tournaments and showcases is impossible. Goalie stats - forget about it.

This never bugged my daughter, but I admit it bugged me a bit. Finally, I realized that not 1 scout/coach ever (ever!) asked my daughter or her coach what her stats were.

Tell me about it. Drives me nuts. The coaches don't care about stats, and for the most part I've found the girls don't either. (Parents, on the other hand.....)

I keep track of them for the Shamrocks, primarily so I can give proper credit when doing write-ups, and the game sheets are rarely 100% accurate. How do I know? Because I watch the video to see who actually had the goal, let alone the assists.;) We keep an accurate track of shots as well, since that is the most important stat for a goalie.

But ironically, it is the only measurement that the Conferences and virtually every school's SID uses when recapping their games. Take a look at every conference's week-end wrap up articles and all you will ever see is the players with the most stats. The weekly award winners are almost always based on the players with the most points or goals etc. What also annoys me is that the Conferences Defensive POW winners are either the "best" goalie of the week or the defenceman with the most points. I agree that scouts that are recruiting will not pay much attention to stats because there is no reliability in the information, but once at this level, it is a different story though. Stats rule.

I don't know how the POW winners are nominated, but the WCHA winners are taken from a nominated list. If the coaches are doing the nominating, then it appears they are trying to recognize a player who was instrumental to their results that weekend. As for the SIDs focus on points, is that because their customers demand that? I notice that when the year end awards are handed out (all conference, POY, etc), there is a firestorm of criticism from the fans if the awarded players are not the point leaders for their positions. The fact that the coaches don't select the "point leaders" at D or G suggests they value a D that can shut down an opposing forward, or a goalie that can singlehandedly win a game despite less than stellar support.

Re: 2013-2014 D1 Commitments

+/- is the best stat. I get annoyed when I see a player receive awards for points and has bad +/-. Recruiters often don't pay attention to the stats because they don't need/ want 20 goal scorers on one team, they need someone to stop the other teams goal scorers. This is why I think that parents don't understand why some players go to D1 schools with very goals and points.

Agree but plus-minus is misleading as well. Players play against top lines in a defensive role yet get scored on. The same players play on a team that doesn't score much or on top of that the player also plays on the power play and scores a little but which does not count in plus minus. Or that player's goaltender has a tough game, the team doesn't score much, that player plays against top lines, and the team gets bombed...ouch, there goes the stats!! Plus minus is good and sometimes doesn't tell the full story if just looking at that stat.

Agree. Watched a game recently and saw one player end up minus three. That player had her player covered like a blanket on two of the goals and had just stepped on the ice in place of the player coming out of the box on a penalty on the third. Not indicative of her play one bit.

Agree that +/- for one game isn't that meaningful, but most of the randomness average out over the season. Also, needs to be put in the context of the other players on the same team. If a D is +1 on a team that is -100 for the season, then that is a pretty good indication that she is one of their stronger defensive defensemen.

Re: 2013-2014 D1 Commitments

Dear Santa 'Claws':
Could you please find and send us one or two snipers for the UNH Wildcats for 2013-14. The team needs a player or two that can be a threat in the offensive zone and help us put pucks in the net next year!
Thank you,
Stick Boy.

You may be pleasantly surprised with Cassandra Vilgrain from Edge School in Calgary. She's a very talented, if somewhat injury-prone, forward who has really stepped up her game this season. Of course, there is the little matter of the jump from JWHL to NCAA Div. 1...

Thanks for the update. If she can bring offense like her dad did with the University of Moncton in the early 80's (and later on in the pro ranks) she will be dynomite! Let's hope for a pleasant surprise!

Most do - the ones that aren't are usually to fill spots vacated by EA kids who didn't get in OR are EA kids who were deferred to regular decision process for some reason.
