Hearing that (as expected by some) at least 1 (and maybe 2) of the above group did not get their Harvard likely letter. Probable that the injuries to Gedman and Pucci and their resulting extra year with the team had an impact on that admissions decision. Woe to the Ivy League recruit who announces their school commitment without a strong academic record and concrete confirmation from the school.

The fact a player is listed here does not mean "They Announced it". There have been errors on these listings in the past.

Woe to the Ivy League institution that "commits" to kids and has kids commit to them when they don't even know if they are admitted or likely admitted. Happens year after year at one particular institution and NCAA should step in to monitor this. Just wrong.

Fair comment in general - but information that a player has committed to a school rarely comes from Div 1 schools/coaches prior to the NLI signings. It usually comes from the player/parents telling their friends or their club team/high school announcing it to get publicity for the club/school (you can see in the 14-15 thread that some club teams are already announcing Ivy League commitments for that year).

Also, this was not a listing error in the specific case(s) here. The player(s) committed to Harvard and the coaching staff committed to them. All of the commitments in Hux's list were listed on their respective club's websites or in newspapers. For whatever reason, when the admission committee reviewed the player's materials they didn't get in. Could have been academic, could have been lack of coach support at the final stage, could have been a financial aid issue, could have been any number of things.

A friend of my D's was "committed" to Princeton. Had written the SAT's and subject tests, submitted transcripts and was cleared to go by all the hockey personnel. Unfortunately she hadn't been cleared by the school admissions. Her marks and scores were all fine but she was missing a second language and by the time she was notified, there was no wiggle room to make up the class. Thankfully she was able to land at another Ivy and is probably better off for it. For a period of time, the girl and her parents were devastated as they felt they had done everything right. They relied on the promises of the personnel they were dealing with and were completely blindsided by the revelation.

The Ivy League does not use LOIs, so what recourse does the NCAA have?

Ivy schools do have Early Credential Reviews which tell you the likelihood of being accepted. But I know first hand that one Ivy pressures girls to commit publicly (even before this review) and that is to the complete disadvantage of the student. The school/coach loses nothing. Some parents are so excited and think this means (or want to think) this means they'll get into the school so they go ahead and commit. But all of a sudden big stud player x comes along and wants to go there. Now the coach is in a bind because he/she can only use so many chits with admissions. So the "excuse" of she didn't get in is told by the coach to the player...oops, really sorry. Now the girl is screwed because everyone has known for a long while that she's committed and stopped recruiting her and she hasn't applied elsewhere in some cases. I just think something has to be done to protect the student athlete.

I worked for my schools volleyball team ( I know mostly different from hockey) and remember being told as I worked on sorting the recruits emails to us, that the school is not allowed to announce that they committed to them early. However, they can (and do) encourage the students to say they have committed to get other schools to leave them alone.

THIS

Happens frequently at another Ivy also. Too bad integrity is in such short supply in D1 hockey

Re: 2013-2014 D1 Commitments

This is why really early commitments and announcements by players are a really bad idea.

People are very trusting (too trusting), and don't realize many (though not all) coaches will renege if something better unexpectedly comes along later. Unfortunately, everyone wants to believe they are special and different and therefore bad things won't happen to them even if they are warned that a particular coach's track record on fulfilling recruiting promises is spotty.

If you are smart, you will not commit fully to any school, much less announce it publicly, without something in writing FROM ADMISSIONS---whether a likely letter, LOI, or at the very least an email saying that it will be forthcoming based on their early review of your submitted academic record.

I know of numerous examples of D1 coaches--Ivy and non-Ivy--who have conveniently reneged on commitments using the excuse that they were unexpectedly overruled by Admissions. It's bogus. If they have integrity, they will ensure Admissions is onside upfront, rather than allowing themselves an out and passing the buck later. They know full well how the system works, and rely on the fact that as a prospective recruit, you don't.

Not to belabor the above point (I guess that I will anyway), but here is a 2015-2016 commitment announcement to Yale made on behalf of the player by the Chicago Young Americans (saw it on the HPHL website). I do not know Miss Vlasic and I'm sure that she is an outstanding player and a very fine student, but a lot can happen academically (and hockey wise) between the Fall of the SOPHOMORE year and the Likely Letter issuance two years later. And you can be pretty sure that no one in the Yale admissions office has even heard of a student/athlete as a sophomore let alone looked over her credentials to assess her admissibility. This announcement is pretty self-serving for the CYA and IMHO does the player a grave dis-service.

http://www.hphl.us/News.html#Vlasic

CYA's EMMA VLASIC RECEIVES VERBAL COMMITMENT FROM YALE UNIVERSITY

CYA is very proud to announce that U16 forward Emma Vlasic, has received a verbal commit from Yale University. Emma is a 4 year CYA player who, finished the 2011-12 season with a 42-32-74 Line in 51 games. Emma is now the second player from the U16 team to receive a commitment.

Emma's commitment to the game along with her work ethic, character and respect for the her teammates and coaches will continue to bring her great success.
