2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats Part II: The final push towards Philadelphia

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats Part II: The final push towards Philadelphia

QU can actually still grab a 1 seed. I’m sure there are various scenarios that I didn’t run that may throw a wrench in the 1 seed, but it still is in play…
Not sure I want that since it almost assures they'll be shipped out west unless they can get above Union or BC.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats Part II: The final push towards Philadelphia

If any Quinnipiac fan is rooting for the fourth No. 1 seed, he/she is a moron.

Based on my interactions with the PairWise predictor today, QU's finishing range is between No. 4 and No. 8 in the PairWise. (No. 4 is if Quinnipiac wins ECAC Hockey, Ferris State loses the WCHA and Wisconsin loses the Big Ten, basically.) If we land a two-seed, it doesn't appear as though two northeast teams would pass us out in that band to force us out west. I think we'd be OK for Bridgeport.

All you need to know is that we're all big Ferris State fans this weekend.

I could care less about what happens with anyone else still playing in D-I. If the Bobcats win out the rest of the way everything will be fine. ;)

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats Part II: The final push towards Philadelphia

Also we've basically guaranteed ourselves to be in Bridgeport, that is unless we take the last 1 seed. I'd personally rather be in Bridgeport but I still want that ECAC championship, so go Wisconsin. Don't know how everyone else feels but I'm going to be selfish and say I want them in Bridgeport over getting a one seed

Of course, being a 1 means you don't have to face another 1 until Philly, and you have proportionately easier opponents in both Regional games.

Personally, I'd always root for the highest seed regardless of the placement (even though we got royally screwed in both 2005 and 2006 by being shipped out to a host's site).

Yeah, I didn't want to bring up the upside and downside of pulling into the 4th #1 seed. Selfishly I'd like the 2 seed so they'll be all of assured of ending up in Bridgeport, but then again being a 1 seed has its obvious advantages.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats Part II: The final push towards Philadelphia

Ferris and Wisconsin must both lose and us win the ECAC for us to be a 1 seed

Make the tourney and Bui will take care of the rest

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats Part II: The final push towards Philadelphia

There hasn't been too much talk on the rink size up in LP and which team it favors. In the end, teams have to play their game, finish their chances and play strong defense, but there is an interesting side note with the rink size.

I look at teams like QU with it's speed, puck possession and quick transition game and think they have an advantage offensively on the big ice surface. The advantage of quick counters, cutting off passing lanes and generating rushes seems to be a fit for the Bobcats.

Conversely, defensive spacing and first passes out of the zone are critical when working the larger sheet. I wonder if the fairly young blue-line group may be at a disadvantage in that regard?

What are your thoughts?

QU is about 30 min from Bridgeport and 90 min from Worcester. If Union and QU are the only ECAC teams to make the NCAA I wouldn't doubt that QU is sent to Worcester to keep the only 2 ECAC teams out of the same bracket.

Think that offensively we have the biggest advantage. I think the Jones' and Peca could really have big games. On D, the mistakes will be magnified. I'm guessing that Federico will be back which would really help. The defense has cleaned it up the last couple weekends and played well. I think overall we have the biggest advantage of the Olympic ice. I would expect a lot of shots for us and like you said finishing chances will be big. With JST back in the lineup you see more action in the crease and better scoring chances.

Should be a fun weekend

It didn't matter much during LPs first run as the ECAC site. If anything it was defensive-oriented teams that over-performed, although that may be a corollary to the axiom that defensive teams tend to do better in post-season play.

It is not systems but players that benefit from the bigger ice. Speed matters but if it means your usual configuration gets bent out of shape it can actually hurt you.

The main thing I have seen is that there are more opportunities to jump up quickly in lanes because there are just more possible lanes: cherry picker forwards have a field day getting behind the D, and offensive-minded defensemen are better able to rush in from the point and make their moves (I'm looking at you, Patrick McCarron).

If you can move the puck quickly on the pp unit you're in good shape -- the passes are longer and the D needs to cover more space and react quicker. If your pp movement is bad, it's just that much more painful.

There are definitely more opportunities for big mistakes, so younger players sometimes have problems. Likewise, freshmen goalies can get spooked. But really we're talking about effects that are in the noise and dwarfed by the normal variation of how a guy feels about his breakfast that day.

I look at it this way: the sheet is the same for everybody. Yes, our speed might give us an advantage, but there's speed on the other teams as well. Personally, I think if the players overthink the size difference they'll be in trouble. Go out and play the way the staff has put together the game plan and let everything else take care of itself.

One thing to note for those that don't know... Rand has taken the team to Placid for practice on large ice during the north country trip over the past few seasons. If nothing else maybe we get a psychological advantage from that.

That's a great move by Pecknold. Anything that demystifies a place will help get the team over that first 10 minutes of "holy crap, here we are." After that it doesn't matter, they just settle into their game mentality, but games can be won or lost in the first 10 minutes.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats Part II: The final push towards Philadelphia

I have to admit that I'm hoping JST steps up this weekend and makes us all forget Kevin Bui! ;)

I've been on the fence about JST all season but he really opened my eyes last weekend against Yale. Solid play at both ends of the ice and the game/series winner on Saturday. As Rand says, he definitely makes us a different team.

On another note... it's been awfully quiet in here all week. A huge weekend looms and hardly a word has been uttered.

That said, I'll ask again if anyone else is heading north? I'll be leaving Friday morning and have been curious about what there is to do in Placid when there's no hockey. Can anyone recommend a good place to grab a late lunch/early dinner on Friday? Any local pubs worth visiting (keeping in mind I'm not a drinker)? I haven't seen anything myself, but is there any kind of formal QU gathering being planned anywhere? Questions, questions, questions...

My priority for the weekend is the hockey. The forecast seems to be for snow all day Saturday (3-5") so I'm not sure how that will affect getting out to have a look around the village. It's my understanding that the Main St area around the arena is where all the good stuff is... can anyone confirm/expound on that?

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats Part II: The final push towards Philadelphia

Hey Mark,
Enjoy Lake Placid!

There's a number of restaurants in town on the main road along the lake.

Haven't seen any alumni emails about a pre game gathering... which is a surprise as I think there had been one last year in Atlantic City before the ECAC semis. As far as I know, there haven't really been any official emails regarding much of anything besides where to watch the game on TV. Don't remember how much was communicated last year regarding the ECAC tournament. The blitz of communications may not have begun until the NCAA tourney last year.

As for things to see... only thing I really saw when I was in town was the Olympic Museum which is in the bottom floor of the complex that the hockey rink is in. May be worth checking out if you're bored.

Have fun on the trip! I'm sure I'll be in touch.

Recruit stats from Tuesday.....There was Monday games but the Piepers, Logan Mick and Andrew Taverner were all held scoreless. Onto Tuesday's stats

Canon Pieper had 1 goal and Bo Pieper had 2 assists in Coquitlam's 5-2 win. They have a 3-1 series lead.
Logan Mick did not play in his teams 5-2 win. The series is even at 2 games.
